just seems so strange to add him to the 53 when you have Sinett on the PS.  Not that he's great or anything, just seems like a waste for a guy who's going to be QB3 for his entire tenure here.

There's still a couple of days for the roster to settle. Maybe they didn't know if Book would make it to their waiver claim so they set up the legwork for Sinnett to come back to PS just in case. Similarly how they agreed in principle with both Strong and EJ Perry to sign as UDFA's because they weren't sure if they could land Strong.

This doesn't count for during games right?

meh. I really dont care for that one at all. Rather Rambo.

Who were the 3 Eagles cuts that got claimed by other teams?

I'm also fascinated to see what becomes of Greg Ward.  I wish him nothing but the best, but I always maintained that he never belonged on an NFL roster, even as depth.  We are about to find out.

I would venture a guess that the vast majority of NFL teams with 2 QB's on the roster have a PS QB who knows the system.  That's Sinnett.

Yup.

I guess one needs a practice QB and having a guy who knows the system saves time.

Still the Carson strong case is one of the more bizarre situations in recent memory.

If one was hiding him for the PS then one would have signed him to PS.

If they think he sucks why not give him a chance to prove it in a pre season game I stead of refusing to even give him any play???

Weird stuff, maybe he slept with Siris or Howie's wife or farts in meetings...🤷‍♂️

People seem to see the dead money as a mistake and Howie's only desperate attempt to get out. But thats incorrect. Its by design. If it was an accident, then thats a sign of a GM who didnt know what he was doing. But its not by accident. Its not desperation. Its all factored in ahead of time.

This will be my last comment on the topic... its about paying for NO production that bothers me.  See the contracts I pointed out that were bad from the start and I called them out at the time.   Brooks, D. Jackson, M. Jackson, Jeffery.  These were bad contracts AND they included massive amounts of dead money on top of it.  Similarly last year, Howie signed a bunch of guys to one year deals, but spread it out over 2 with his void years.  Guys like Anthony Harris, Joe Flacco and Ryan Kerrigan (and a few others) are costing money this year and provided pretty much nothing to the team even last year.  Just bad management, IMO.  I'd rather those deals have been smaller with incentives instead of what they were.  And sure, you could argue that if they had structured them that way, then maybe they don't sign here.  And my response is... so what?  They provided nothing anyway.  Same as bringing back Cox for this year, and having that money stretch out now over to 2025, probably.   I don't see Cox as really being worth it this year.  I think the time came to move on and let some younger guys get more snaps.  And I don't think he'll be as effective in the 4i role either.

On the older contracts, the odds of Brooks ever living up to the being the highest paid OG in the NFL after his first Achilles was extremely low.  The odds of him never matching even close to that contract was very high.  Bad risk management, and we are still going to be dealing with that dead money 3 years removed from his last meaningful snap for this team.   They didn't need to make him such a lucrative extension two full years before his other deal ran out.  But they did.  Or more exactly, they might have.. because they were pretty tight against the cap that year as well, and this was Howie's way of 'fixing' it.  But, the 'fix', IMO ended up actually costing the team more because I saw that contract as a drastic overpay for Brooks at that time.

Alshon Jeffery was a cancer before the contract restructure after they drafted JJAW.  It was time to move on, or at least let it play out and get rid of him quick, but they didn't and then they had to deal with him sticking around for another 3 years on the cap.  He'll finally be off the books after this season.  Again, I think that was another drastic overpay.

The Desean trade never made sense.  Then they gave him a new contract on top of it, structured such that he cost the Eagles more money as a cut against the cap last year than he did for the two teams that he actually played for.   Massive overpay AND trade for a guy that was on the downside and was likely to be cut anyway.

The issue isn't about the dead money, per se.  The issue is the amount of dead money and who the dead money is actually spent on.  Most of these dead cap charges are for guys that provided nothing their last year on the roster in addition to their last year(s) on the cap and were overpaid for it.   We're arguing different things.   Dead cap money happens, and will always happen.  But, I prefer that dead cap space to be for players that had meaningful contributions in the year(s) before that dead money starts to pile up.

Book isn’t remotely close to being Hurts backup, especially with this roster. If Hurts really stinks up the joint we need someone else to sail the ship.

Goodrich was the only CB added right? Still time for Gowan.

Give me Castro Fields and Gowan.

An exponential function is of the form, y=a^x.  A common value for a is e, which produces the natural exponential function. Base e is often used because the function can be made linear by taking natural logs.

You are correct, but it is not y = x ^ a, where a is a constant.

If they claimed Strong and Dak went down, and Strong beat Hurts on SNF at home, this board may collapse.

I think there's a distinction between bad decisions and moving cap hits to future years. Signing players to contracts and extensions that will eat up future cap space when the player is gone is a bad decision that is compounded by limiting future opportunities.  The bigger problem is the roster decision to extend or sign a bad player.  If the team is eating up future space with good roster moves, I think it's a good use of resources.

Agreed.  But those moves add up to roughly half of the dead space, which is why the number of this team is so high compared to others.  If the number were merely $20M or so, I'd have no beef.   See the post just a bit before.  (And this truly is my last comment on the subject... until next offseason.)

the bad extensions for no production is a separate issue done for different reasons. The attempt at running it back and repeating another super bowl run. That was a miscalculation, no doubt. The money was wasted. But the overall concept of borrowing money from the future because it is worth more now, is sound. The resulting dead cap is why people are screaming CAP HELL! But it is not true.

I think DET currently only has Goff and Nate Sudfeld on their roster; I could see Strong being added to their PS at some point.

That would be epic.  VA Beach would really have his work cut out for him holding it all together.

It's only 2, Blackwell and Anderson. Three is incorrect.

And Ward is on IR. He's either staying there all season or Eagles will release him with an injury settlement, so you might have to wait awhile for that one to develop.

I think they were both unimpressed and (for reasons not disclosed to us) pissed off at him.

If they didn't like his attitude, but thought he could be great, they'd keep him on the roster and would punish him into the ground.  If they thought he sucked but thought he was a decent guy, he would have played half the preseason and got cut.  To never sniff time at all means they thought he sucked and needed to be turned into an example.
