EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

Scenario:

This season ends at the NFCCG when the offense comes up flat.  Hurts season plays out mostly as it has so far (some spectacular games, and some games where we wish the passing was a bit more crisp).

Howie talks to Hurts about an extension.  He wants more than Kyler Murray, but not a ton more.  An AFC team offers 2 firsts and 2 seconds.

What’s your move?

If Hurts continues to play like he has so far? Give the dude his money and figure the rest out.

Take the picks. Qb mega deals are wrecking teams left and right. Hurts has been really good, but Murray's contract is ridiculous.

Random question, and it might sound very dumb. Is tonight’s game considered game 3 or game 4 when we look back at it? As in will we refer to what happens on Thursday as game 3 or game 4 since it was moved?

If the Eagles go from 4-11-1 in 2020, to 9-8 in 2021, to 14-3(?) and/or #1 seed in NFC in 2022 .... the starting QB isn't getting traded.

So do we think things are going to be quiet for us ahead of the deadline?

Once you give Hurts his money, the team will become weaker around him.

As @austinfan posted earlier today, did Hurts make a massive jump, or is the team around him making him look better ??

Looking at the current AFC standings, the top 9 teams have their QB already, Colts at 10 need a QB, but don't have the draft capital, Browns and Broncos just got QB's and don't have the draft capital, not sure what the Raiders will do, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh just drafted QB's, so that leaves the Texans with the 1st or 2nd pick in 2023.

I jump all over that trade package.  The only thing that would change my thinking is if the Eagles win a Super Bowl.

You can't trade Hurts with the way he's currently playing. Paying him a mega deal is tough too. As well as he's playing, the scheme is excellent around him and so are the players. That won't always be the case. Defenses will catch up and Hurts will have to be better on obvious passing downs. In a perfect scenario, he gets like $35M a year, but that looks out of the realm of possibility right now. They're in a tough spot. I guess it is what it is. You pay the QB. At least most of the other contending teams also pay their QB, so it's sort of a neutral effect outside of teams with QBs on rookie deals.

Oh... Then I guess on that basis yes we will be! 😄

Thanks for the help.

My ask is for situations where people placed bets on game 3 some time ago. Will those bets be tied to tonight’s game or Thursday’s game.

I think I would hold off on an extension and franchise him after 2023 if he's still playing this well. Double up again in 2024 if you have to. It doesn't save you money in the long run, but it buys you more time to figure out just how valuable he is. I think that's the most important thing right now with this decision, even if it means you don't get the benefits of the early deal.

What would have been the box score of game 3 then? A phantom game? Then we’re talking about an 8 game series….

If you must have an answer... a local kid I know who is a cancer survivor was due to throw out the first pitch for Game 4.  That's been moved from tonight to tomorrow night, because tonight's game is Game 3, and tomorrow night's game is Game 4.

I’ll just keep copying and pasting.

Also, good for that kid. That’s awesome.

I’m hoping we trade for a depth EDGE rusher. Maybe Robert Quinn if he’s available.

Pretty sure that tonight is being called Game 3.  Not sure how it would be applied to any other game.  This is game 3.

If you bet for game 3 on Monday or before Monday they refunded everyone on DraftKings. Had to make new bets for tonight‘s game 3

I bet with a bookie and wanted to ask someone else before asking him

Current franchise number for 2024 ( average of the top 5 salaries ) is 50.5 million.  Eagles currently have 47.5 million in cap room, and have 28 players under contract.

It definitely makes the team around the QB weaker, but isn't finding that QB the entire point? Teams have been searching for their QB for decades. If you're lucky enough to find one you don't just let him go. Then you're right back where you started trying to find that QB. Trust the front office to build the team around him. There is zero chance Lurie and Howie let Hurts go if he keeps playing the way he has.

This stuff about QB contracts crippling teams is largely because that team wasn’t built well to begin with. We’re still dealing with cap hits from Wentz and we’re undefeated. Dallas and Minnesota have 2 of the monster NFC QB contracts and are second and third in the conference. The two biggest AFC deals are Allen and Mahomes are they’re seeds 1 and 2. Do those QB contracts somehow prevent them from claiming those seeds? If we make the NFCCG we have a window, and the big QB contract will take 2-3 years to hit the cap hard.  If Howie has to pay Hurts big money, he’ll figure it out.

Also have to factor in that this team is specifically built around hurts. The entire scheme, AJ brown, Devonta Smith. We’re going out to big leads because of the stress Hurts’ skillset puts on a defense. A better QB would do better in general, but a similarly talented QB with a different skillset may not.

Even if we draft a QB it’ll be 3-4 years before they really make an impact (if it’s not a bust), and this team will be mostly torn down by then.

What are we getting out of those picks that replaces an MVP caliber QB?

Do you have to ask?  You take the deal.  Then you draft Cam Rising in Day 2 and pick up Max Duggan in Day 3 or UDFA.  You then sign Your UFAs and ride the D in 2023 while the QB learns.  It is the Big Ben approach.

That would be great... Imagine if we could do that for say a fourth round pick? Plus get Chicago to pick up most of the cap hit this year.

Since Allen/Mahomes are the current ideal standard, I wanted to sort of qualify exactly what they do that no one else does.  I used to say it was 3rd and long erasing ability...and it is...but it's their playing style that is so unique.  Manning/Brees/Brady didn't play at all like this...maybe a little bit of it from some of the well known gunslingers like Rodgers/Favre/Randall, but I don't think this was ever a playing style until Mahomes turned it into one and Allen followed suit.

On script, they are actually, nearly 1 read QBs.  If that first read isn't there, they'll bail from the pocket.  They keep their eyes downfield.  Depending on the rush, sometimes they toe the line, sometimes they backpedal (and have the arm strength where it doesn't matter).  And they WILL put the ball on a receiver beyond the first down marker.  It could be 3rd and 30.  And there just might be a DB between the ball and that receiver.  But they will use their athleticism to toe that line, elude the rush, and then use their brute arm strength to put the ball on someone beyond the sticks.

It's actually not a very precise brand of QB-ing.  Defensive coordinators have failed, but they need to find a way to use that against them.  You do see that the INTs are ticking up for both of them with this style of play.  Even if you can't sack them or even truly pressure them, I think the key is to disrupt their vision downfield when they leave the pocket.  That forces the INTs.
