It definitely makes the team around the QB weaker, but isn't finding that QB the entire point? Teams have been searching for their QB for decades. If you're lucky enough to find one you don't just let him go. Then you're right back where you started trying to find that QB. Trust the front office to build the team around him. There is zero chance Lurie and Howie let Hurts go if he keeps playing the way he has.

It is their job to figure out if Hurts is playing that way because of Hurts, or because of the talent around him.

I think I would hold off on an extension and franchise him after 2023 if he's still playing this well. Double up again in 2024 if you have to. It doesn't save you money in the long run, but it buys you more time to figure out just how valuable he is. I think that's the most important thing right now with this decision, even if it means you don't get the early deal.

That is an option as well

I think Howie will wait to see how the season turns out before making a decision on Hurts.

And I'm not sure Hurts has the kind of ego where he has to be the highest paid QB, he's going to be rich in any case, if he doesn't get hurt he'll have a second contract for even more money, but once you're rich would you rather have a few million more per year or play for a contender year after year? If you team wins on a regular basis, you'll get some of that money back in endorsements, and you'll have more value when your career ends.

This stuff about QB contracts crippling teams is largely because that team wasn’t built well to begin with. We’re still dealing with cap hits from Wentz and we’re undefeated. Dallas and Minnesota have 2 of the monster NFC QB contracts and are second and third in the conference. The two biggest deals are Allen and Mahomes are they’re 1 and 2 in the AFC. Do those QB contracts somehow prevent them from claiming that seeds?

I would be fine giving Hurts Dak or Cousins money, but not Murray money.

I don't they can lock him up any earlier even if they wanted to?

Correct. He’s not eligible until after his 3rd season.

I'd approach him and ask how badly he wants to win.  If he wants to sign a team friendly deal (does anyone ever want to do that?) and this year plays out nicely, then go for it.  If the price is a bit high, then see what he's made of.

Playing out 2023 leads to one of two outcomes: 1. He falls back to Earth and we are glad we avoided a huge deal.  2. He doesn't and everyone wins anyway and is happy to throw him some extra franchise QB money.

If he throws a fit about it, as other QBs have recently, then he wasn't meant to be the guy anyway (as those other QBs recently were not).

But he has an agent that will be in his ear.

Jalen Hurts barring a catastrophe, is not going anywhere!! No one is ever happy here. LMAO. Howie will figure out the salary cap. Not gonna be a problem in team building here. They do it with Mahomes and many other cities too. Gotta trust front office. Eagles have the next 2 drafts to restock here. Set up so wonderfully with Hurts being cheap for 1 more year. Time is right after this year to cut a lot of aging and expensive vets here anyway. The key is that this pretty young offense will stay mostly intact besides Kelce, who we have a nice heir apparent to. Howie will need to be focused mainly on defense for next 2 drafts. Like to keep at least Gardner & Bradberry to keep secondary intact. And go from there with draft. Team's future looks amazing even with a huge QB contract.

And Howie covered himself pushing one of the 1st to 2023 in a much stronger QB class.

It is not as rosey as you think, Eagles have north of 50 million dead next year, and if they want to keep CJG and Bradberry, they will end up with north of 50 million dead in 2024.  ( already 30 dead )

Random question, and it might sound very dumb. Is tonight’s game considered game 3 or game 4 when we look back at it? As in will we refer to what happens on Thursday as game 3 or game 4 since it was moved?

Today is game 3

That's true. To that point of whether it is the team around Hurts making him look better or if Hurts has improved, I believe it is both but more so Hurts. On offense really the only difference is AJ Brown. He does have a massive impact on the offense, but look at where Hurts has improved outside of just the talent around him. His ability to go through his progressions, his accuracy, his decision making, staying in the pocket, reading defenses, checks at the line, and that's not even all he's improved on. Those are things that you can say are Hurts' improvement and not the talent around him. The leap he has taken in the passing game is so wildly underappreciated. He is playing like a top 5 QB which is something no one would have said last year.

I understand many of you still have your doubts about Hurts and if he can sustain this level of play. I can respect that, but nothing seems fluky about what he is doing. I think that doubt comes from how much improvement he has made in such a short amount of time that it doesn't seem like it's real and that he'll revert back. Time will tell, but I am going to enjoy the ride.

It’s escalation, it goes with the cap. No one is getting money QBs signed for 2-3 years ago.

Look at what the % of the cap was that Dak signed for in 2020(?), and it’ll be close to what Hurts gets in 2023 or 2024, which will probably be more than Murray

Love to see the Phillies lose.  The sooner they disappear from any sports radio talk and it goes to full on Eagles and Sixers the better.

Whoever buys it I hope they re-brand the team.  The name Commanders sucks and so do their uniforms.  They won't be allowed to go back to Redskins but make it something that ties it to that teams history.  The Hogs or something.

Unofficial Phillies mascot back for game 3.  Tried to add some extra mojo for game 2 that did not work out, going back to the formula that works.

I have a very high ranking source in the organization that I just got off the phone with. They said yes.

I would bet some big $$ on it

I’m on the wait and see approach right now. I need to see what he and the offense does come postseason before committing long term. Which has been my stance from before the season. Kill it regular season and win as many games as possible. I don’t care how it gets done or what it looks like. I hope hurts continues to kill it like he has and prove me and others wrong on here about what we thought he could be.

However if we get to the playoffs and we have another poor offensive performance and Hurts is a major part of it then it creates doubt about whether we can win a SB or not with him at QB.  if we get to the postseason and the offense fails and hurts just doesn’t look good then the regular season feels kind of hallow because the goal is to win lombardi trophies. It’s why i have an issue paying lamar what he thinks he deserves.

I think the postseason is going to play a major role in this.

So if I placed a bet with a bookie before the series started on game 3, would that be applied to tonight or Thursday? Trying to figure out how it should go before asking him since I don’t know him very well.

Tonight. If he disagrees I’d never go back to him again.

I’m very conflicted

Please do this. I love the powder blues.

actually called the team shop to see if they had any powder blue authentic harper jerseys where they were going to put WS patches on it. Told me no. Was pretty sad by it

When we win the WS you’ll be able to get any jersey you want.

Me too. I feel like he might have to choose between CGJ vs Epps and White vs Edwards though. All 4 of them are FAs after this year along with the other long list

Easy choices. CGJ and White.

Scenario:

This season ends at the NFCCG when the offense comes up flat.  Hurts season plays out mostly as it has so far (some spectacular games, and some games where we wish the passing was a bit more crisp).

Howie talks to Hurts about an extension.  He wants more than Kyler Murray, but not a ton more.  An AFC team offers 2 firsts and 2 seconds.

What’s your move?

Is it the Colts? Cause I know if he goes there, he’ll suck no matter what.

Thus, the 6 high draft picks in 1st 2 rounds in next 2 years to replenish those positions, at worst. I expect him to grow that Saints pick into more draft picks as well, to QB starved teams. That's Howie's forte. They got the QB1 figured out first which is what's most important here. Tailor made the offense for him to succeed. He will get better from here as well. It's obvious that his work ethic is unmatched. 2nd full year starting. Looks good to me.
