I froze this pic a split second before Jalen ducks and runs.

First of all, at this moment, he should be releasing the pass. The safety in the middle of the field is paying attention to Smith, but is flat footed. Smith is streaking full speed at around the 22 yard line, and the safety is flat footed at the 25. In other words, this safety is toast.

But if he felt he needed to move to buy  more time (which was wrong), the yellow line depicts where he stupidly ran. You can see how those 2 DL easily disengage and pursue him. And the small red line shows where he could have drifted in the pocket to still deliver that pass to Smith, with the OL still at an angle to wall off that DL from getting to Hurts.

I also used the blue line to depict that there are 4 passing options who all ran routes within 10 yards of the LOS. All the question marks are begging the question- why is all of this green grass unused by the offense?

Only 1 WR (Smith) went beyond that point. Hurts looks at him getting wide open for a TD but doesnt want to throw that far. The whole offense is designed around his puny arm and unwillingness to throw the ball down field.

It looked like Sanders was his first read during the play.  Smith was the next read and he didn't get to the other receivers.  It makes sense that he would have gone to his right if that was his progression.  I don't know why they wouldn't have another vertical route as that would have made it more difficult on the safety. I don't buy your take that they are only running short routes because of his arm strength.  They have taken shot plays and he can certainly throw the ball deep 50 yards without difficulty.  I do believe that one reason he didn't throw to Smith is that he doesn't trust his arm well enough and he is adverse to turnovers.

It's first down at your own 10 yard line.  Why would you be calling a shot play?  I saw KC last night, and their big-armed QB, run dozens of sit routes to maintain possession and matriculate down the field.

The Texans look to be in cover-3.  The post safety is facing Smith.  That could be a key for Hurts to NOT throw that ball.

Hurts is second in the NFL with a passer rating of 107.8. He's also second in yards per pass attempt (8.5), sixth in completion percentage (68.2%), and he's fourth both in completions of 20+ yards (30) and 40+ yards (6). (h/t Kempski).

But let's use one play from deep in our own territory to draw a conclusion around the entire scheme.

Regarding Kempski, in his article today Lane is quoted as saying he’d like to play maybe 2 more seasons.  With Isaac’s future here uncertain in 2023 a G/RT prospect might be a bit higher on the draft wishlist.

Was watching Baldinger's clips and it appears that Hurts' knee was down before the ball was ripped out.  Guess that it may have been overturned if the Texans recovered.

Was it under two minutes in the game at that point?

Anyone still placing the Bills and Chiefs in a tier above the Eagles now?

Not sure how you can after this weekend.

Chiefs are still on top due to their deep playoff experience (which is the only stat that matters to me). If they stumble into the playoffs, then that might change.

Agreed.  But those will have to come via outside acquistions.  To me an 'ascending' team is when young players are ascending individually and as such raise the level of the whole team.  For example, the 2006 Phillies were an ascending team.  They didn't add major pieces around their nucleus to get to the next level.  The players on the team got better and as a result the team improved.  This team doesn't have much in that way.  Marsh, Stott and ??? And frankly, I don't see those 2 being the type that can ascend to future All-Star level.

Kind of the point I was throwing out there yesterday.  This isn't a homegrown team like the Braves.  The Phillies are going to have to buy their way.  I suppose winning is winning and it's nice to have an owner who is willing to throw cash around and whatnot but that's the exact same reason I've always hated the Yankees.  I'd much rather see the Phillies figure out their minor league system, draft good prospects and build their franchise by making right decisions and having a great development program.  I love the fact that Bryce Harper is a Phillie but it would be so much better if he was the final piece they needed to add to their homegrown nucleus rather than just being one of many high paid players they've brought in.

I’m convinced Hurts had a mentor in Wentz as a guy to look at and say to himself "Don’t do that stuff” when it comes to turnovers and decision making with all the head-scratching plays he had.

I think all 3 teams are bunched together right now.  All 3 have weaknesses and can be beat.  This season is wide open for anyone really.

Dicker the Kicker with the game winner and looks like a raving lunatic.  Apparently he was going to a Carrie Underwood concert in Austin, TX before he got the call from his agent telling him to jump on a plane to the game.

Flimsy at best

In no way, shape, or form can you say the 2022 Chiefs have been better than the 2022 Eagles.

in the Phillies defense they actually have some  good prospects coming up soon. Have painter, McGarry and Abel. As well as Rojas and Ortiz the outfielders.  Also signed hao yu lee from Taiwan last year. 19 has a chance to be a really good infielder. He’s already a top 6 prospect. The issue was klentak and mcphail wasted about 3 years of draft picks when we sucked or we couldn’t develop on guys like moniak, haseley, kingery and others.

I think Hurts made the correct read because of the position of the safety.  Benjamin Solak, who originally posted the play as one where Hurts missed a TD, is wrong.  I think even if he made the throw to Smith there's a good chance the safety makes the tackle.  The safety, Owens, clearly was watching Smith and Hurts.  He actually was getting depth until Hurts started to scramble.  I am not going to pretend I know what the coverage was but it looks to me the safety has the deep middle and only has to look at Smith in making his read.  It makes sense to run more than one vertical route in the seam when there's one safety or cover-3. You force the safety to pick and you have an open receiver because the CB is taking away the sideline.  So if Smith was the primary target, then you think they would have had 2 vertical routes in the seam.  It appears there is only one, so Smith probably wasn't the first read on the play.

Allen had a bad game throwing a bunch of uncharacteristic picks.

I thought the jets were done after all the  injuries they've had to key players but theyre scrappy.

Meanwhile the chiefs can't run the ball, Titans have a tough run defense and the chiefs were playing from behind the whole game but no one is scared of their run game.

Meanwhile the eagles can run, they can dink and dunk or they can beat you deep.

The one worry with them is without Davis they haven't been stout against the run which will be a test against the Titans in a few weeks

I think in the AFC it's the Dolphins, they're deep passing game scares teams and they went all In at the trade deadline to make a post season  push.I'd guess they would be 1st in that division if tua didn't get hurt.

Life as a NFL kicker ... Today you have a job, tomorrow you don't .... and vice versa. At least he looks like a young single guy so probably pretty mobile and few responsibilities.

This year is Jordan with the Wizards. Just making the playoffs will be a feat in itself

Caplan/Mosher speculating that Sanders may get 10M+/Y in free agency. If so, I wish Miles the best in the future and will appreciate his last season here.

Maybe, given his improvement this year.  I think Hurts is working on his game.  He is also surrounding himself with people that want him to work on his game.  AJ Brown made a comment about watching a lot of film with Hurts. Smith appears to be driven to succeed as well.  I am not sure how much this is the result of seeing Wentz fail.  He had the same fumbling issues that Wentz did when Wentz was on the team.

MVP stuff, people are discounting Tyreek Hill in this equation.

He is on pace to be the NFL's first 2000 yard receiver, and on pace to have 188 catches, 39 more than the current record.

He is going to get votes, especially if the Dolphins win the AFCE.
