Sure Matt but that’s a lot of Ifs though… I have no idea if 72 and 74 will survive this season uninjured or playing at a high level or even if they have the appetite to play another full season. The Saints pick is at 10 now, so we might not even be positioned to get A blue prospect let alone The blue chip prospect.

I do like the idea of drafting/acquiring another NT in 2023 so that we might be able to run a heavy penny set, e.g., Milton-NT-JD (and more importantly having some contingency for injury, other than scouring the streets). I would want another 3T/4i while we’re talking turkey.

In the short-term just seeing a heavy set once JD gets back would be interesting.

Suh and Joseph are great in-season signings, but they shouldn't be brought back for 2023. They're short-term Band-Aids.

I think they shake this 3 game garbage and wreck green Bay.

Is it a 'bad rule' and they are over-officiating it... or is the style of offense now (Specifically more RPOs) running squarely into the intent of that rule?    Seems to me the issue is two part...

Part 1 - The RPO tells the OL to run block - aka, drive your man backwards - and then break off from the one guy you are blocking in a double team, and get to the next level - aka, downfield.

Part 2 - QBs are looking to 'make plays' and so they want to throw the ball and will hold the ball more often than they should and throw it late, rather than just handing it off like they should on the read.

Part 3 - Practice time is dramatically decreased and we are seeing the compound interest on that decreased practice time coming home to roost.  Years of decreased practice time, decreased time actually ON THE FIELD, versus being in the classroom is leading to a lack of muscle memory for how far down field is DOWN FIELD.  And I think the teams aren't stopping practice to correct it often enough, because they frankly don't have the time available to really do it.

Seems to me that the style of offenses that teams are running far more often are running head long into this rule and the consequence of it is that OL are going downfield more than they have in the past.  And, defensive coaches are sending tapes to the league, no doubt, to show how often the OL is actually downfield and have been over the years, so the officials are more aware to be aware of it... and perhaps to look for it.   That doesn't make it over-officiated.  That just means that they are noticing it when it is over-committed.   The illegal man downfield on the Giants that called back a TD, which I'm sure is the genesis of this discussion even without going back to read it, because it helped Dallas tremendously, was a correct call.   And in that particular instance, the OL KNEW he was too far downfield and tried to get back where he was supposed to go.  And perhaps it was actually his backwards movement that drew the eyes of the official to him.  Who knows, but the OL was downfield too far.  Did it affect the play?  That's another instance all together, but things get called all the time that don't really 'affect the play'.  Is a OL lining up too deep in the backfield really that big a deal?  Or if the eligible receiver on the outside covers up the TE?  Does that really affect the play?   Tons of rules have been put into place to help the Offense over the years... let's keep them honest by keeping the ineligible players behind or at the LOS.  Seems to be that the offenses are almost banking on the fact that the officials won't call it as often as it actually happens, just like the Seahawks of the past would grab, bump, mug, etc. WRs all game knowing that officials wouldn't call them on it every time.  Play the game the right way, and it won't be called.

It’s a bad rule.  One yard isn’t downfield. Three yards as in college makes much better sense.

I’ll give it a shot. @LeanMeanGM

Eagles - 24

Packers - 17

Bonus: Run defense holds the Packers to under 75 yards.

Agreed on both the short-term realism and pleasure of the heavy set we have "in our hands" right  now, as well as the longer-term speculation about things to come. You are right about the IFs, but there is a part of me that sees Suh-Joseph as essentially the equivalent of  a pair of productive third or fourth year rookies.  The cost is about the same ... in other words very reasonable.  IF they both survive the remainder of the season intact and have an interest in coming back in 2023, I would strongly support that kind of "Howie bandaid" for the interior DL.  Howie could then double dip on EDGE players with the knowledge that the 2024 draft or UFAs are going to have to address the interior DL.

Saving cap dollars at DT would give Howie more dollars in his attempts to keep the CB/Safety up at its current level.

Also, since the lure of the Super Bowl and being a Super Bowl champion has been prominent in the discussions with players like Suh and Joseph and Bradberry and CJGJ, I wonder how the NFL would assess a Mattress Mack approach to handling incentive payments?  Implementing a Mattress Mack approach would certainly stretch cap dollars considerably.

The new eagles Christmas song is actually pretty good for a Christmas song. Kinda shocked, really. Those guys can actually sing

Another interesting thing is once we hit 10 wins, it will mark only the 2nd time that the team improved from one season to the next under the same head coach since Howie became GM.

I agree that they are short-term band aids, but in looking at all the challenges that Howie faces in this coming offseason, having workable band-aids for some of the many positions he has to address may well be necessary.

QB - Minshew's contract expires.  What he wants as a next step is unclear. (Minshew is effectively a band aid)

RB - 2 positions out of 3 to address at the end of the season. Resigning Scott would be a band-aid.  I personally would like to see the Eagles come out of the Draft with two RBs.

WR - Pascal is a UFA, but could certainly be resigned (I would call him a band aid)

OT - Dillard and Toth gone

OG - Seumalo and Opeta contracts expire

OC - Does Kelce come back?  If not a backup OC is needed.

DE - Graham contract expires.  EDGE ideally will be addressed in the Draft

DT - Suh, Joseph, Hargrave and Cox contracts all expire

LB - Edwards and White contracts expire

CB - Bradberry

Safety - both Epps and CJGJ

He didn't know what "we" were doing but his football coach told them specifically not go there because he knew was going to happen. Which is it Jerry??

My semi-hot take is that we're going to be "bad to average" in 2023 as it will be the year we reset the roster. There's no way we have as much depth next year as we do this year. We're going to have to play rookies or vets on prove-it deals.
There's a real chance Cox, Graham and Kelce are no longer Eagles next year.

I don't disagree with your take.  I think the likelihood of "bad to average" will factor into the decision about whether to extend Hurts or trade him for a boatload of Draft picks.
