My biggest issue with deciding a game on PKs is that it takes defense completely out of the equation.

Yeah it’s not perfect and there might be other ways to handle it.  But even going down to 9 players in overtime could eventually lead to a tie as well.  So eventually penalty kicks would come into play.

  • Perfect weekend for me. I got to make my long time soul mate my wife officially. And I got a eagles win today. Life is good.

Point I was trying to make was that letting Nelson Agholor walk in FA made WR a need in the draft and forced Howie to try to plug a hole.  Even if Nelson wasn't a stud, bringing him back takes the pressure off of Howie to try to fill the need in the draft, especially the first round.

Nelson was and is bad.  Re-signing him would have been a mistake.  He was God awful in 2019.  Drafting a WR was 100% a need.

I don't know the cupboard was pretty bare even if agholor had been re signed.

Hey, there are posters on here who complained when the Eagles traded a 3rd and a 5th for Darius Slay — as though they wanted to keep watching that bum Mills jump the same out-and-up route and get burned deep 12 to 15 times every season, at a minimum.

Lamenting not having Agholor and a couple of extra 3rd round picks in comparison to the current WRs the Eagles acquired is ….. head scratching

True, but I would think it'd happen far less often with those rule changes in place. Unfortunately, soccer is a bit like the United States when it comes to governance in that there are multiple leagues and federations that would have to adopt said rules and the chance of them all agreeing on something so drastic is basically zero. Even if FIFA were to take the lead (which they wouldn't because being the most corrupt sports league on the planet means being more interestedi n lining your pockets with bribe money, rather than making substantial changes to improve the game) the other leagues would be slow to fall in line and you'd end up with very different rules for the same players/teams.

There are plenty of soccer purists that feel that PKs are an inadequate representation of the game for something that decides so many critical matches.  I realize there are arguments on the other side of that too.

If it were up to me, I'd remove offside in both the NHL and soccer. This will never happen, but would open up scoring and prevent more ties/shootouts.

The largest problem is that the fields/arenas/pitches are the same size as 50+ years ago, but the players are bigger/stronger/faster.

The only important thing to know about the World Cup is when it will be over.  Unwatchable garbage, played by fairies.  Rule changes?  Nothing complicated:

Take.Out.The.Offside.Rule

Diving — yellow card

Rolling around in agony — subbed off, out of game.  Obviously you’re in no condition to continue …. unless you’re faking?  Red card for faking; team plays down a man

He's not 100%. Last night he had half a sack and two QB hits. He seemed to play the run OK.

Thanks, as you likely know he’s currently projected to go near the end of the 1st. Also, since he just transferred from Albany you aren’t going to find much on Youtube.

In my youth, I used to play and watch soccer games as the primary sport.  Not anymore.  Even at the highest level of the game in World Cup, they pass the ball backward more often than forward.  Rarely they attack in offense with game plans.  Very few offensive players, if at all, can beat the defender one on one.  Brazil team may be the only exception that feature individual skills and offensive designs.

In the early group rounds, teams are playing not to lose, instead of trying to win game.  A drew is fine and better than a loss.  The real games start in the elimination round when they have to win to advance.  Even game is decided by penalty kicks, it is still more entertaining than the playing not to lose.

He is very fast but he needs to work on pass rushing moves (understandable coming from Albany) and on upper body strength.

I don't like soccer, but I love the World Cup. Soccer can be a very mundane game at times, and there's some matches when it seems like one side has next to no chance of scoring.

He just turned 22, so he should likely strike while iron is hot (if he was younger he might be better off with another year at FSU), then again Jermaine Johnson was an older prospect albeit coming from a completely different situation (breaking out from the UGA rotation, rather than the FCS).

Did I stumble into this soccer thread by mistake this morning?

As a Nebraska grad, it was a good start to the weekend beating Iowa and reeling in Rhule. There hasn’t been much to be happy about as a Husker fan in quite some time, so I’ll take small victories where I can.

I think it's closer to 25%, maybe even less. But I do agree with you that PKs are an awful way to end games. A much better method would be to extend extra time to two 25 minus periods, with 4 additional subs per team, and each side playing with 10 men in the first period, and then 9 men in the second. That should ideally open things up and allow the more talented players to take control of the game and create more scoring opportunities. Bringing back golden goal would help but you don't see a lot of games where both teams score equally in extra time so I'm not sure that helps all that much.

Other changes I'd make to the game would be to implement a rule similar to the over and back rule in basketball. Teams maintaining possession by passing from deep in opponent's territory all the way to their own center backs on their own half of the field may be "tactical" in the traditional sense, but it makes for a very boring sport to watch for outsiders or casual observers.

You'd need 2 additional lines like the blue lines in hockey, so that crossing two lines toward your own goal is considered "over and back" and the result would be a free kick given to the other team at mid field. Aside from that, harsher penalties for simulating injuries, but that can be tricky to enforce since I've played enough soccer to know that sometimes collisions that look awful aren't that painful, meanwhile the ones that graze you can be debilitating. Heck, even the NFL is having issues with flopping for a flag and faking injuries to stop play.

Too much complication.  Soccer just needs to get rid of the offside rule.  That will open up the entire field like nothing else.

This.  Just rid of the offside rule and the game improves a ton.

It's insane how much ground they can cover.  To their credit, of course. But it blows to watch it.

I always come away with the simplest fix.  One or two less players.  Just too many guys out there.  Open the ish up a little bit.  And it would allow for more bombing kicks too (so I guess mess with the offsides a bit?)    I want to see super fast talented players blazing with the ball and bomb it in from 8 to 15 yards out after evading 1 or 2 defenders.  Not 5 of them to stall. Again. For the hundredth time.

I can see the beauty and skill but I am still bored.  It is like slow hockey without the checking.  And yes, I have trouble watching hockey and limit my viewing to the Flyers in the playoffs mostly.

I like them getting Rhule as a HC.  Much like Chip he is a damn good coach but he's just better suited for the college game.

My thing is the flopping. I could watch soccer if not for the absolute clown show these guys put on at the slightest bit of contact. It’s honestly kind of pathetic. They must be coached to do it, because literally every player is flailing all over the field, as if we can’t see the replay and that they were barely touched. If I want to see a bunch of p***ies flopping around I’ll just put on porn hub.

I love chaos in college football so I'm rooting for all the upsets today.

That said I still think Ohio State wins.

Which esports?

Lot of Starcraft, both 1 and 2. CS:GO too. I played a lot of competitive FPS including Counterstrike back in the day and I'm still impressed by how good the players are. Also I like a lot of speedgaming tournaments. Technically that's not an esport but it's still competitive gaming and can be entertaining if it's a good game to watch.

It feels like the Eagles have only played a few games at 1pm this year. I missed the first game because I was out of the country, and there probably hasn't been more than 3 or 4 1pm kickoffs since. I work overnights so if the games aren't at 1 or 4 I am screwed. I really like to see the NFL get rid of the Thursday night games , and possibly Sunday night games.

I respect the purists, so if they don't want to make changes to regulation...don't.  But when a match goes to extra time, that's when I'd make changes to open up the game so that it's not determined by PKs.  I like the idea of progressively pulling more men off the field.  Once enough guys come off, the ball will find the net pretty quickly.

If you don’t like a sport, don’t watch it. No one is forcing you to. Believe it or not, not everyone thinks the same way or likes the same things….

I don’t like watching NASCAR or golf so guess what, I don’t watch it. Imagine that…

That explains the "two girls, one world cup" entry in your search history.
