For a city that has such disdain for Nola, who's one of the game's best pitchers, it's going to be epic watching how much Walker is hated in this town by July.

Looking forward to referencing this conversation in several months when Walker is public enemy #1 with Phils fans.

Walker is more of a #5 than a #3. If you think you're going anywhere with that stiff as a #3 starter... oof. You don't want him starting playoff games and they gave him 17m per year.

Eflin is a better pitcher, they should've just kept Eflin for close to half the price.

Eflin did well for us last year but that's just objectively not true.  I'm not gonna act like like Walker is some kind of ace, but both his floor and ceiling are above Eflin's easily.

Eflin never stays healthy. Walker the last 3 years and outside of a two year window in 2018-19 stays healthy and has been solid as a 4 starter which the Phillies needed. Eflin isn’t a better pitcher cause even when he’s healthy for his career his era is 4.5 and he doesn’t eat innings cause he always gets hurt. So it’s 13.3 mil for eflin and then you have to add another arm and sometimes tax your bullpen and cause chaos to your rotation cause he doesn’t stay healthy. I’m guessing the reason why the rays did that contract is because they’re try to go with a 6 man rotation so he’s only pitching once a week to limit his starts.

go to the Phillies board. I’ve said multiple times they should go after Rodon because they need a frontline lefty to go between Nola and Wheeler. However, by doing this, they can still get one at the deadline and Acquire a big time starter. Bieber at the trade deadline might get moved by the guardians if they’re not in contention. He has one year left of arbitration after 2023. Which means they’re going to have to make a decision on him and if they’re out of it at the deadline you might be able to get Shane Bieber who is better and younger than rodon.

Eflin on the Rays is a great place for him, they do very well with pitchers. They turned Charlie Morton into a different guy. Eflin probably has a better season than Walker next season on almost every metric.

The Rays are very good at maximizing pitchers but typically have to do it by using committees, limiting innings significantly, using openiers etc.  It's a solid landing spot for Eflin because of his injury history I'll give you that. But if you're asking which one I'd want as the Phillies #4 next year (or #3 depending on how you view Suarez) the answer right now is pretty straightforward.

so we should just project metrics for 2023 meanwhile ignore that eflin never stays healthy and has a .6 era higher in about 40 less games over their careers. The Phillies are the rays and aren’t likely to use a 6 man rotation which is why thor looked as good as he did with the angels. There’s a chance the rays use a 6 man rotation  which very much isn’t happening here

just so you know if they signed rodon and Shane Bieber at the trade deadline becomes available (which many people think might happen as he’s coming into his last year of arbitration in 2024) that completely takes them out of that sweepstakes. Just to let you know Bieber is better then rodon and he is 3 years younger and we actually have prospects outside of painter that could get that done.

also, letting you know if they signed Rodon and Correa they were likely already in the luxury tax before they even go to fix the bullpen. As many think rodon is getting 30-35 and Correa might get a higher av than what we signed Turner for. Right now they’re under the luxury tax so they can go and add to the bullpen. So they aren’t repeat offenders at the moment. And if they want to go into the luxury tax they can, or they can wait till the deadline and then really going to the luxury tax with a big trade.

Starters would play vs Saints

It’s not even a question. You aren’t benching starters for 3 straight games which would effectively be 4 weeks.

That game wasnt about Covey as much as it was about the return unit finally blocking.

And maybe Franklin can speak on this- was that punter just outkicking his coverage or were we really setting up returns?

It was awesome to be at the game, sitting upper level and watching those returns develop. I was like HES GONNA HAVE ROOM!

Each time he did. Each time he broke a nice return. Hes fine. If he can get blocks.

That’s what Covey said, they just were out kicking their coverage and they took advantage of it, didn’t do anything different.

You’re looking good on our bet.

Yup.  Honestly I thought the TD:INT ratio was the most unlikely for me to win and yet it's the one with the biggest lead right now.

TD:INT of 6.7 (20:3), Average of 245 passing yards/game, Completion percentage of 68.1%

I wholeheartedly disagree.  I don’t base my roster development on Jonathan F-ing Gannon.  They have proven to be willing to draft guys who might not fit immediately and draft them high.  Davis wasn’t necessarily a scheme fit.  Jalen Hurts made no sense.  Milton Williams (not high) didn’t really have a set position.   They’ve made mistakes.  But they certainly weren’t pigeon holed into a decision based on current schemes or philosophies.  So no, scheme fit is not the most important aspect.  We obviously won’t agree here.

Frankly, unless New Orleans losses out, I’m not sure we’ll have a shot at Anderson anyway.

I disagree that Davis wasn't a scheme fit. But thats besides the point.

We are just going to rank players differently this year based on our own personal philosophy. Im going to "scout" players for us based on our scheme until we know differently if/when a new DC is named. I dont think its very helpful to just have a list of who is the best overall because scheme fit is too important. I imagine just drafting BPA regardless of scheme like a novice dart thrower thinking you just throw darts at the bullseye all the time. In reality,  most of the time you have to aim for a specific number.

Trying to envision a scheme fit, and overall impact is more fun for me than chucking darts at the bullseye just because it looks the best.

Certainly seemed to be the case. But I still think he got some blocks too.

A kicker can out kick his coverage and then Covey can still see a wall of other teams jerseys coming at him after a few yards. This game, he didnt. At least Im hoping, it was more than just a stupid punter not understanding football.

Id like to believe they got something figured out. Coverage teams did better as well.

It's academic, right? We won't be higher than 7th?

Jalen Hurts wasn’t even nominated for man of the year award. Something to consider when it comes to his "intangibles”.

Looked like line drives to me.   Long flat punts from my untrained eye, just out kicked the coverage by a good amount.

If that was the case (I plan on working on it tomorrow), then it's about fn time. For eleven straight games, opposing punters have been just killing it. We were due. Let's not overthink this.

I seriously doubt that, btw.

I mean, Anderson is one heck of a bullseye. With him, that is BPA in its most apparent form, so you make the pick and end up not regretting it. Not that we'll likely have a shot at getting him anyway.

Eagles Clinching Scenarios for Week 14:

Birds Beat GMen = Playoff Berth Clinched

or

Seattle Loss and 49ers loss = Playoff Berth Clinched

Vikings and KC both have Division Clinching Scenarios this week as well.

Jerry seemed to back pedal on OBJ today. I assume OBJ rejected him

Let's see.  If the Eagles beat the Giants, Bears and then Cowboys then I think they clinch the division at that point.  Cowboys would be down 3 games and the Eagles would own the head to head on top of that with 2 games then remaining.   If the Vikings lose one of their next 3 games (@Lions, Colts, Giants) and the Eagles win their next 3 then they would not only clinch the NFC East with a win over Dallas but they could also exit that weekend with the #1 seed clinched.

Then what do you do those last 2 weeks of the season?  Can the backups manage a win over the Saints to keep them from worsening their draft position?

Let’s just beat the Giants

Right now Houston is almost guaranteed to have a better pick than New Orleans

It is hard to imagine that Chicago will win one more game than New Orleans in the remaining 5 weeks, so my money is on them to have a better pick than New Orleans

Denver and the Rams both have a better chance of winning one more game than New Orleans in the remaining 5 weeks, but still not great.

So the odds are not goods that current #5 pick will improve.

The outlook for the teams with picks #6, #7 and #8 right now, Carolina, Jacksonville, and Arizona will depend a lot on how they do this weekend.  A loss for any of them drops them into a tie with New Orleans.  A win gives them a one game better record than New Orleans.  Carolina and New Orleans play each other in the final week of the season.Carolina could actually be playing with a chance for the division championship in that game.

So, I wouldn't rule out being better than 7th yet.

If you were at 7th let's say, would you:

A) Trade up to 3 (if Anderson is still there) with our other #1 this year and get Anderson

B) Stay and pick best player available

C) Trade down getting more picks

Obviously a lot goes into this, who is/are the best players available and what are the picks/offers to trade down and to where

B...unless a QB needy team is offering a ton and there happens to be a QB there.
