Wait, really? That’s dumb on the NFL then. He’s appealing at least.

Both are dumb.

If that is a concern sign another punter to the PS for that one game.  It is more than likely a meaningless game.  That is the option 2) I listed Hanover downside.

I’m not sure you’re understanding the argument. No one is saying to discard Kern. He would be punting in the playoffs. But they could save a roster spot by not putting him on the 53 man roster for the final game of the season IF THE GAME IS MEANINGLESS.

Furthermore I’m not sure that Elliott punting would expose him to unnecessary risk. And as stated before, they could EASILY sign another punter to the practice squad to be activated for that game.

It’s all about massaging the final couple spots on the active roster. You don’t want to cut someone that you’ve been carrying all year with the idea of him competing for a spot next summer, only to see him get claimed by some other team.

How did we end up with the situation where we need to be discussing this in the first place?

The Eagles trail the Bills in Total Offense by 91 yards.  Tack that 91 yards on to their 394 yards per game average and they move above 400 yards per game for the season.

They trail the 49ers by 103 yards in Total Offense.  A sub 200 yard game by the Boys would move the Eagles close to the #1 spot.

Ideally the Eagles can control the clock with another running performance like they had against the Packers.

I'm worried about the playoffs.

They have no punter worries in the Playoffs with Kern on the Practice Squad.  PS elevations reset to zero in the Playoffs and there is no limit on how many times a PS player can be elevated during the entire duration of the Playoffs.

Are you seriously asking that question?

Yeah, can’t do the 2nd one. He’s gone for awhile.

I’m taking your word for this about the rules.

Also, can you imagine the uproar that is going to erupt when the Eagles sign some random punter to the practice squad and then elevate him for the finale? Nearly everyone will assume it’s an indictment on Kern (who incidentally was pretty bad against the Bears) or wonder what the hell Howie is doing.

It was rhetorical, Matt.

We are in this situation because there is inherent risk any time a player goes on to the football field... that risk elevates when a player does something on the field that they aren't used to doing... i.e. a punter running with the football and preparing to take contact, or in this case asking a placekicker to punt.

And we've seen situations where an injured placekicker can and has cost teams a game.

Equally, I am against bringing in a new punter for just 1 game to protect a PS guy.  Just not good business, IMO.  If we have to expose the 53rd player on the roster to waivers, so be it.  I'm not a fan of circumventing rules and playing funny business with loopholes.

A lot of machinations to keep Sermon, Opeta and Book safe from poachers.

Protect Opeta.  Book or Sermon, meh... no need to wring our hands unnecessarily.

@LeanMeanGM

Eagles 33

F Faces 31

Jake Elliott for the win

Not really. Teams use the practice squad in creative ways all the time during the season. It’s par for the course.

This whole thing is going to be impossible to police

Maybe. He’s a free agent next year. Not sure what levels they will go to protect him.

I'm not worried about next year.  Opeta is a good backup OG to have for the playoffs.   They've already shown that they have no interest in actually using Sermon.   And Book isn't a developmental QB.  If he is claimed by a team.. oh well.

Rained half the day in my corner of Philly - but bone dry now with all this wind. I’m not sure I have any good reasons to leave the house tomorrow.

@all...

Better safe than sorry with these temps... take care to make sure that your pipes don't freeze.   Recommended to set a faucet to drip overnight.   (I'm going to have 2 dripping.  One upstairs, one down.)

One thing that gives me confidence for tomorrow is knowing how everyone on that team and Minshew will be playing for Hurts.  It will be their driving force.
