EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

That's such a contrived storyline. The 2003 Eagles were pissed how 2002 ended.  Teams are pissed how seasons end all the time. It doesn't matter. It's a new team the next year and new season and by the time it's over it's 4 months later.

You can't be serious

Were the Saints pissed when they lost on a missed call? Sure. Who cares?  Most playoff teams are pissed when they lose a heartbreaker.  If they make it back the next year it's because they were a good team to begin with.

You don't think the players are motivated by a terrible exit like last year? It's not Madden where the season just resets....these guys are human and ultra-competitive, of course they use last years playoff loss as motivation. They would have used it all off-season too I'm sure. And based on last night, sure looked like the Bills wanted to win a lot more than the full of themselves Rams.

The Rams are better than they looked last night, and it might have been a very early wake up call that repeating isn't gonna be easy.

ok.   And the 2004 team wasn't extra driven due to their continued failures in the NFC CG.  And the players themselves didn't talk about it, both leading up to the game and after it.  It played no part in their mentality going into that season.

Feeling that way doesn't assure success, but it absolutely can impact their preparation and drive.

Extra driven? Like they were trying harder than they would have otherwise? No.  They got TO and were a better team all season then when they got to the NFCCG (without him) they finally got an opponent that they could beat.  They didn't beat the Falcons because they were extra driven all offseason.  That was literally the only different result from the previous 2 seasons anyway

Have you ever played a sport in your life? One that you play the same opponents year after year?

Players use different things to motivate them in the offseason but ultimately the guys who work would keep the same routine anyway. It's just a mental trick for them.  Do you really think the Eagles players would have worked harder this offseason if the season ended differently last year?  This is a pro sport with professionals. Most of them workout hard in the offseason for their own careers

Have I said once that their drive would carry them to success?  Nope.  But, if you don't think that having a little extra motivation might cause someone to study a little more film, do one more rep, give just a little more push on the goalline, etc. then I don't know what to say.

The players on the 2004 team talked about it... both as a positive and a negative.  They wanted to win it even more, but there was also even more pressure to do so.  It's not always a positive, but it absolutely can be.  They talk about Brady, even now, being pissed off about being selected #199.  Jordan was driven to be the best.  The internal drive of a person can push them to great success.  It's not a guarantee of anything, but it never hurts.  "Win one for the Gipper" and all that.  No way to know how big a role it can or will play, but its always there.

Sheil and Solak’s podcast is pretty awesome.  I’d put it up there with Duffy/Cosell.

Yes. If we had a very close game with a tough loss, where we had a lead with 13 seconds to go and then never got to touch the ball again, yeah, there'd be an edge I'd think.

The NFL has such a slim margin in talent, that even the smallest mental edge can go a long way.

They should cancel the season and give the Bills the SB now. Because if I’ve learned anything after decades of watching NFL football it’s that what happens in the 2nd half of the first game always is definitive proof of what will happen 4 months later

I just took out a 100K loan against my 401k to place a bet on Buffalo winning the SB! Free money!

* If I lose I expect the US government to pay it back

Agreed. #1 in my rotation. They have good chemistry, while balancing film/analytics. The best one IMO.

After reviewing film of last nights game with the pillars and breaking down some plays, I have come to the conclusion that the Rams didn’t score more points than the Bills.  That cost them the game.  I haven’t seen the All-22 yet, but I bet some of the turnovers and lack of offense hurt their chances for scoring points.

Hmmmm

Motivation plays a role in winning a game.  It's not like that Atlanta team was that much worse than the Panthers, Tampa or the Rams.  The Eagles should have beaten the Panthers is Andy hadn't abandoned the run game.

That speaks to my point. They lost because of coaching not because of lack of motivation. Tom Brady & Bellichik manufacture motivation on demand. Last night Josh Allen played like Josh Allen. He was great in the playoff game. Nothing new there.

Lol, it's not enough that Dallas loses, but they do so in very comical ways. The Romo snap, the Dak f-up last year, I'm sure there's more....

Awww.  That's cute.  Sarcasm not your strong suit?  Tell us again how the NFL is behind the College game schematically.  Let's see the mental gymnastics again.  Or is there another brilliant take you have for today?

Hey. I was sticking up for you.

Dez in Green Bay.

The not catch with Dez in the playoffs.

Nope.  Def So-Cal or West Texas.

Damn. Beat me to it.

Hargrave has been really good for us but still I'm hesitant to do a long extension.
