Rewind a few years... Early November of 2019, the Eagles made Brandon Brooks the highest paid OG in the history of the NFL and it was applauded by nearly everyone in the blog.  (He was 30 years old, with a year and a half left on his contract.)  6 weeks later he was injured and finished the year on IR.  The following spring he ruptures his second Achilles, and misses the year. In 2021, he tears a bicep in week 2, ending the year on IR.  And before the 2022 season, he retires.

By contrast, Nelson is only 26 years old and this contract ends when he's 30.  I suspect this is a much better and smarter investment than the one the Eagles gave out just 4 years ago.  The Colts should get more for their money than the Eagles did.  In fact, they could get more than the Eagles did by week 9 of this season.

It's a lot for a guard, but they also aren't lugging around a dead cap number that equals the entire value over the life of this deal, in just this season alone.

I'll add, Nelson was named 1st team All-Pro each of his first 3 years in the league, only missing last year due to missing 3 games to injury.  Brooks never made All-Pro even once, but was a 3 time Pro Bowler.   Nelson has made the Pro Bowl each year he's been in the league.   Long story short... the investment in Nelson makes way more sense than the Eagles investment in Brooks back in 2019.   Although, it is a bigger percentage of the cap than the deal for Brooks was (9.6% versus 7.4%),  they aren't carrying a huge dead cap sum with them this year and next.  ($8M).  So, they have more 'available' cap space to spend than do the Eagles.   They can afford it.

An under the radar concern for me today is kick and punt coverage. Don't trust those units. But feel very good about the game overall

I think the Eagles will bulldoze the Lions on offense and defense, but there is a bit of a benign neglect of ST from this franchise (which is presently the way of the NFL).  ST is becoming all about kicking it as far as you can, as reliably as you can, between the goalposts and punting it downfield as far as you can.  Playmaking opportunities feel like they have been eliminated from ST.  Most/all big plays seem to come from breakdowns and mishaps.  But our return situation may be prone to mishaps given the revolving door at PR.

J. J. McCarthy is a hell of a prospect. Only a sophomore, though.

I feel like Covey will catch the punts at least.  If he wasn't active I'd have had shades of that GB opener years ago.

Finally GameDay is here. Great time to be a fan. Birds got this in the bag.

Not under the radar at all.  They were shaky in the pre-season.  Could be that they had a lot of non-roster guys on ST so it doesn't matter but if that's the case, the actual ST guys will have to shake off some rust.  The whole team will have to.

Anthony Richardson had a 3.8 QBR last night.   That’s bad, right?

Funny, no price of admission tweets about him this week.  That's the fear with Richardson though and let's be honest, his numbers last week, much like Hurts, looked good because of the rushing numbers.  He's going to be exciting to watch but as a QB, boy he needs work.

Ravens were lucky he didn't sign. No runningback is worth that type of contract

All the Lamar Jackson jokes would be a lot funnier if we didn't have a dollar-store version of him lining up under center for us.

Kittle is out

sf should still win easy though right?

Even without kittle they're still by far the better team IMO.
