Has Slay ever shadowed a player or is he an island guy? Does Gannon's scheme allow that? I'd have him shadow Jefferson next week if it's possible

Slay has shadowed for us.

For all you PFF guys, the best QB in the league week 1 was ranked 8th :roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll:

Hang on.  Hurts was better than Mahomes???

QB 1- 30 for 39, 360 yards 5 TD.

QB 2- 18 for 32, 243 0 TD.

Clearly QB2 was better.

Maybe I just don't remember those "smart plays" from last year.

Anyway, I'm sticking with my general observation.  We saw the same guy from last year.  Only one game and I'm happy to be patient but I'm not holding my breath.  I think at the end of the day Hurts is what he is and that's it.

I'm trying to hold judgement until the bye about my thoughts on growth or regression. Yesterday felt very familiar, but it's also week 1. Definitely would like to see more than what I saw. Gonna watch some tape later on today for missed plays and ones where the take off was the best options.

We were easily a top half (Top 16) team yesterday.

There was lots of ugly, ugly football.

Agreed.  Its almost like all these teams that are punting on the preseason completely aren't prepared for Opening Day.

It might be easy to believe that if he hadn’t put Hurts in MVP talks long before they announced the Cason Strong troll job.

I think Swift is the better RB today. Kid is very underrated. But oh boy, Jefferson is going for 200+

I think Swift is a great player, but Cook is still a bit better if you factor in his pass catching ability. Swift rung us up for 170yds in total, so that's a lofty standard for Cook, but I wouldn't be shocked if he hit 140yds in his own right.

And their QB doesn't care who he slings it to

If you are talking about Winston, he was actually really good about his turnovers last year.. don't know if he will ever  be 30/8 kinda guy, but he has all the physical tools to get there.

I really hope I'm wrong and I want nothing more than to see Hurts develop.  I love a lot about his game and his leadership.  However, in the NFL the QB needs to be able to throw at a higher level than we've seen so far from Hurts and I just don't see him developing enough to make a real difference in that crucial area.

Cook, Jefferson, and Thielen O/U 350 yards on Monday

Nah... only 16.  The last one was a kneel down.   It isn't a real rushing attempt.   It shouldn't be counted.  That should push him out of the top 10 in carries.    Umm... yay. 😕

Still the team's leading rusher in terms of carries... which should never happen either.

Swift had the next highest with 15 carries.  Still top 10!

8 were designed runs - and yet he gained most of his rushing yards  the 9 times he ran when pressured.  The game planning was obviously designed with his mobility in mind.

Nothing shocking about that.  When a QB is running late against man to man coverage, the defenders all have their backs to him and he gets free yards.  Meanwhile, 2 of the designed carries were 4th and 1... one at the goal line where he can't get credit for more than 1 yard no matter what, and 1 where it was a QB sneak and getting a little over 1 yard is the goal.

Looking at aggregate stats without considering the context is pretty meaningless.    A more fair comparison would be to ask how effective his ROs and QB draws were in comparison to the running backs toting the rock.  Seems that they were pretty similar in terms of results.  And personally, I'd rather the RBs carry the load there, not the QB.

As for the frequency that he ran from the pocket... again, he runs more than he needs to as a defense mechanism to cover for his inabilities at the nuances of the QB position.  He's still very much an athlete playing QB, not a QB who is also a plus athlete.    And based on the number of hits he took... he won't last the season with this style and frequency of runs.  Just a question of when he gets hurt and misses time, not if.

Vikings rested most of their starters during preseason too. That’s the trend with most teams. This game is a mismatch but it’s not because of preseason. It’s because Minnesota is a better team.

I don’t know that they are the better team but they certainly played better yesterday and clearly more ready to play football. I’d feel differently if this game was in November but this is bad timing for us.

I don't like a bit about his style because it limits growth where it matters. If you never sit in the pocket and learn to avoid the pressure, you'll never grow as a pocket QB. The leadership I feel is overstated. This team always has had it's verbal leaders and ra ra guys. He's likeable somewhat, but he has had small red flags pop up during the offseason for me personality wise.

Speaking of RB.  Saquon Barkley looks to be back.  He ran hard yesterday.  I loved him at PSU, hate that he's a Giant but man what a player he could be if he's healthy.

No he wasn't but did you see anything yesterday that tells you he's improved in the areas that are needed?  1-read QB.  Pressure= scramble without looking downfield.   He is who he is.

I still think his ceiling is Backup

Im just saying lets be fair and call it like we see it.  There were a handful of times he was running for his life almost immediately after the snap.  One of these was the big conversion on 3rd and 14 or whatever.  That was a huge play in the game.

We dont really have a choice but to watch and see if he improves, anyway, so Im just going to try and be fair.

But no, I havent changed my overall opinion on him

I’m pretty sure most would agree that we don’t want to see him running 16-17 times a game.  Not really debating that at all.

I can see where you could rate Allen over Mahomes but that's ridiculous.

The super man celebration sealed it yesterday, it's all about him, always has been.

Hey, I have one of the best o-lines in the league, but Imma dunk on them by inviting pressure and running it myself 17 times so my squirters can celebrate how I saved the day.

I didn't see that yesterday, but have seen it in the past.

Hurts is Tyrod Taylor.  It's that simple.
