Unless theyre damn-near ripe, no they wont ripen off the tree.  And they ripen super fast so that's why theyre not really commercially cultivated.  You have to get them fast and before the animals get to them.   You can substitute them for bananas, so like a banana bread recipe will work.  You dont want them over ripe though because they get mushy and gross.

Me and this country dude humped through the brush along an old railroad trail for like 45 min to get to his secret spot and there were like 100 trees.  

To be honest the taste isnt amazing but the novelty of this weird, tropical looking fruit is worth it. Its the largest native fruit in the US and most people dont even know about it.  I bet you can find them in spots in PA too.
