EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

2021 draft is looking really impressive for the early WRs. We usually talk about the high bust potential of the position in the draft, and the steep learning curve to the NFL game. Meanwhile Chase, Waddle, Smith, Bateman and Moore all look solid-to-amazing already. The only top 5 guy picked who hasn't figured it out yet is Toney and that seems mostly mental.

A good example of an eccentric (weirdo?) rah-rah coach who had some staying power as a HC. His biggest issue is believing the best way to win is 1980s football. Well that and having a bunch of nutjobs on the roster.

Not sure it is selfishness.  Rather I think what we see in Hurts is based on his ability. When asked about Hurts predraft, I replied that I thought he was a one read and go QB.  A lot of QBs are that in college as it takes time to refine reading and frankly, Hurts never got that.  Different  OCs and Tua competition at Alabama. One year at Oklahoma.  Pederson his rookie year. But this year he has the same offense two years running.  That seemed to show in both the games played this year.  I do think he is reading better although he slipped a couple of times in both games where the slower trigger had a negative impact (illegal man downfield and the sack were trigger impacted.). He is resisting the crouch this year, which I like.

Take that long TD run.  The play design is pretty good, if I am reading it correctly. Harrison Smith has been aggressive all game with Goedert.  The play looks simple, run Goedert on what looks like a short pattern while Hurts basically bootlegs to the right. If Harrison comes to cover Hurts, throw it over his head to Goedert. If he doesn’t, run into the space vacated by Smith. It’s clear that both are really designed for about a ten yard gain.  Hurts almost goes out  of bounds after the initial gain but reads his blocks, basically Goedert is punishing Smith and winning the block.  So Hurts keeps running.  Do you think Goedert was mad he didn’t get the pass?  Pure smash mouth football is a joyous thing when you are playing.  Remember the first time you popped an opposing player (likely a friend). Felt good. Bet Goedert enjoyed that blocking more than a ten yard catch.

Always fun for a TE to abuse a CB, Block him right out of the play...especially when it results in a Score.

Sure Joe Dirt was all grins after that one.

The all-22 is up. I thought the OL played only so-so, by their standards. Both Lane and Mailata gave up inside pressures, as did Seumalo. Dickerson definitely was downfield on those two calls. Kelce was on a couple but wasn't called, one of them being the inside screen to Gainwell that turned into an INT.

The DL was terrific. They started a number of series in the 4i and completely stoned the Vikings' running game. Cox, Hargrave, and Williams all had several pressures, as did Reddick. Davis had some nice plays that won't show up in the stat sheet but isolated teammates as he absorbed double-teams.

Remember how teams would kill us with underneath stuff last year? Faster LBs and DBs are taking that away and the DL is doing a good job of pressuring straight up the middle. Cousins was throwing off his back foot all night.

It's still early, though, but I'm getting excited.

Thanks for the review, JR. Me too.

Possibilities.

Pressure up the middle works against most QBs. Caveat...(Mahomes bails well).

If Gannon can continue to scheme middle pressure, the D should thrive.

A lesson on good writing? Have you seen my posts?

I know plenty of rules about writing and grammar but a message board about football is not a place I choose to worry about making everything perfect.

That should be clear by my lack of capitalization much of the time. And sometimes even lack of punctuation.

For Shame!

How are we supposed to know when to pause in our minds and redirect our interpretation of your thoughts???

I believe it was one of Aesop's fables, a cautionary tale. Went something like this...

The river was flooded and the Turtle and the Scorpion both needed to cross. The Turtle offered the Scorpion a ride on his back, as the turtle was an excellent swimmer, but cautioned " Don't sting me or we"ll both drown". The Scorpion accepted.

Halfway across, the Scorpion stung the Turtle in the neck. As they were both sinking and drowning, the Turtle asked "Why'?

As the Scorpion was slipping under the water, he said " Because it's my nature"....

Apropos of nothing whatsoever....

Frog not Turtle.  But you have the Scorpion part 100% right!

Hey JR, I don't have the All 22, but I'm interested in that throw to Goedert into triple coverage. Do you mind going over that play when you can? Was he the first and only read? With three guys converging on him was there another option to go with the ball?

I think the play was 2nd Q, about 7 minutes left?

Epps was a sixth round draft choice of the Vikings not an UDFA.  Actually liked him in the draft and liked the pick up.  If you recall, Sendejo, who we signed as a FA from the Vikings, other than almost killing Maddox, was a flop and we waived him mid season. The Vikings swooped in and signed Sendejo waiving Epps thinking they could sneak him to the practice squad.  Howie claimed Epps and put him on the roster in Sendejo’s spot.  I looked at it as an Epps for Sendejo swap and that we got the better end of the deal. Several other posters opined similarly and I could have sworn you were one.  Epps looked talented coming out of Wyoming, albeit a little green.  Always a question about whether Ss from those schools might make the leap.

A QB is supposed to lead by example and in putting in the work, Hurts has.  Maybe you seem him as self promoting and selfish.  Nothing has leaked from the locker room to suggest his teammates agree.  I think teammates tend to gravitate to other teammates that put the work in.  Band of brothers.

Speaking of work, I loved Travis Kelce commenting on Hurts’ squats and Jason’s response around the 40 minute mark of their podcast.  Jason said that Hurts has built up his core but now has changed his focus of his working out to fluidity and how fluidity is more necessary as a QB.  We hear all the time about Hurts arm strength.  I wonder if he had too much of the wrong kind from working out.  Remember how bad Wentz was after the offseason of gaining strength.  He was tight. Sounds like Hurts may have begun to understand that.  In college with the focus on QBs being able to run, coaches may not resist QBs weight training. But not in the pros.  With the base he has, I doubt Hurts becomes considerably weaker but I could see him losing the tightness and gaining fluidity and that may help his arm strength. (Probably not quite the right term as I would bet on Hurts winning at arm wrestling with 95% of the other NFL QBs).

Big post but mostly agree. Pro Training and Coaching seems to be effective. Ceiling higher than EMB projects??

Yeah I turned on the game last Saturday for mordecai and he was getting attention. They're having a nice run of receiver talent lately.

Wrong. I'm not some old creepy guy whos married like you and your boys.

Just remember this. Only 2.5% of all the men in the united states are under 40, make 100K, and are over 6 feet tall. When you take out the married dudes that number becomes closer to .8%

And yes, I've turned down hotter, or better asses, or  skankier chics

Surrre you have. I'm 40 (until Saturday) and my net income I can guarantee eclipses yours. And I'm 6'2". I am married however. So I'm part of the .8%! :flex:

The question that jumps to my mind in reading this is, what QBs don't put in the work? That's the issue I have. With Hurts discussions, many times the first thing people bring up is how hard of a worker he is. You think he works any harder than Tom Brady, Josh Allen, et al? I'm sure there's a few outliers out there, like the Jay Cutlers of the world, but I think every single QB in the league worth his salt could easily be described as "putting in the work". So why is Hurts credited with it as being a badge of honour? It's part of the reason there's such a backlash against him, because it feels like there was need to point these kind of things out, because his play left so much to be desired (which hopefully changes).

To some extent Rodgers. He is frustrated with his new receivers (not the first time) yet doesn’t show up to work with them in the offseason.  Apparently, Kyler Murray doesn’t study film opting instead to play video games. Rumors sure suggested that Wentz quit communicating with Doug and the same issues have plagued him his entire career.  Rosen. Manzeil, Vince Young.  I can keep going as it is a long list.

Not just QBs but the NFL is littered with washouts.  Danny the Fireman.  JJAW, Reagor.  For some, I refer to it is believing their clippings, basically the articles singing their praises in high school, college and the draft selection.  We have all seen it on the job.  The new hire fresh to the job that always excelled in school and cannot believe they aren’t the manager after six months.  Believing your clippings.

Not immediately succeeding may have helped Brandon Graham become a prototype professional.  Others wouldn’t have put in the work.  Asante Samuel was too slow and too short to be a starting corner.  Film work proved otherwise.  Part of this is fighting for a job.

Pascal and Fulgham both played together at Old Dominion.  There Fulgham had a reputation for taking on new things.  Both learned that work effort.  Fulgham was the better athlete and got drafted.  Pascal was a UDFA.  Pascal bounced around his first year with the Commode Doors and then the Titans.  Fulgham went practice squad with the Lions.  But for some reason he thought he made it and got cut.  Green Bay tried him and cut him.  The Eagles  signed him and he had four games of success and then quit putting in the work that got him drafted in the first place.  Pascal went to the Colts.,They saw the effort in his blocking and a willingness to work on his routes. Still not great hands but you can see the effort.  Watch him on STs.  Fulgham is out of football at this point.  Players respect players willing to put in the work.

He was "pouting” (projection) or showing unhappiness after missing on a catch opportunity IIRC. For all any of us know, he may have been reacting to a twinge in the groin pull area or to what I thought was illegal contact not called by the referee.  Heck, he could have been upset at the effects he was feeling from eating Taco Bell with HE before the game.

All are far bigger reaches. Think horses not zebras. We saw him do the same last year. Dude is a competitor
