His running ability narrows the gap between him and the top 5 qbs in the league. You live with the downside, which is offset by the fact that he has prepared his body to absorb hits much better than any other qb in the league. 

I don't think anyone wants to turn him in to Kirk Cousins, just looking to reduce the number of hits he takes.  Look at pre-torn ACL Carson Wentz.  People seem to forget just how good he was out of the pocket and as a running QB.  He had 64 carries for 299 yards but no TDs in 13 games.  That comes out to 5 carries for 23 yards per game.  His best rushing game coincidentally was against WFT when he had 8 for 63.  We then saw what happened against the Rams, whatever he did to his back and then again with the Clowney hit.  Never the same though after the ACL.  But those pre-injury games were the perfect mix of passing and using his legs.  He was a great dual threat.

Hurts clearly is the better runner than Wentz.  He has 230 rushes in 22 games or roughly 10.5 carries per game.  That's A LOT for a QB and it's not even taking in to account any passing plays when he gets hit or sacked.  To put that in perspective, Miles Sanders averages 12 carries per game.  I just think that's too much for a QB in the NFL.  Half of that is on the play calling too.  There were called QB runs last week with the game in hand.  Sirianni has to be smarter.  He KNOWS Hurts is going to scramble on passing plays which will expose him to hits.  Miles Sanders is running the ball great this year and he's a RB...use him instead of called QB plays.

Wentz was also 6-5, 240 lbs. Built like a LB and all it took was the right hits to knock him out.  Hurts def has taken care of his body but it's the NFL and injuries do happen.  He already had ankle issues so let's not act like he's immune to getting hurt.

The counterpoint is that if you reduce the number of times that Hurts runs, you also reduce the threat of him running, which changes the way defenses scheme against us.

As many people have pointed out, Hurts isn't going to magically turn into Patrick Mahomes. He doesn't have the physical tools to be a top 5 qb. But Hurts can narrow the gap between himself and the top qbs by forcing defenses to account for his running ability, which makes it easier for the passing game.

Yes, he will continue to take hits, which is not ideal. But I don't think there is a scenario where Hurts plays a style of football that helps him avoid those hits that doesn't impact his level of performance.

Wentz pre mental breakdown the MVP candidate year was much better than Hurts. It's no secret I'm not a Hurts fan, but I'd even take him now over Wentz. If he keeps running he will get injured and they will start piling up.

Wentz decided to leave for reasons. He will want revenge. He will be gun slinging. I expect at least 1 INT, and a bunch of sacks as he holds the ball too long waiting for something big down field. Possibly a fumble or 2 as well.

he was upset that they drafted another QB so high. He wanted out because he was angry. Not like it was some friendly mutual agreement leaving on good terms.

 

With that said, its not as though we should be worried. Wentz playing hero ball is exactly what an opposing defense should want. He is going to make a ton of mistakes.

And I live in south central PA about 35-40 minutes north of downtown Baltimore and 20 minutes from the northern suburbs, yet because I live in PA and my Fox station is in York, another 15 minutes up the road and they are an Eagles flagship station.   A couple years ago they tried a Ravens preseason game instead of the Eagles preseason game and caught holy hell.  I know because I was one of the people that called.  What’s hilarious with this stupid swap is the CBS station, which tends to go Ravens, Steelers, because the Steelers played on Thursday, my Ravens fans neighbors get the pleasure of watching the bungles v the jets.
