Hurts said "Rain, sleet, snow the Eagles trained to go” in the post-game speech. Kinda catchy.

Some random thoughts after watching the all-22.

There was a screen pass to Goedert that was a thing of beauty. He blocked until the last possible second, and it looked like the play was a screen to Sanders going the other way. Hurts then pivoted with a DT in his face and hit him perfectly. Quez and AJ Brown had great blocks on the play to give him oodles of room. But the design of the play was great. And credit to Hurts for selling the fake and standing tall knowing he was going to take a hit to make it work.

Devin Lloyd was out of position all game, but his play really dropped off after Hurts bulldozed him into the end zone.

I will die on the hill that the flag on Goedert was bs. He never engaged the DB, he just stood there. The DB makes no attempt to get around him. Really questionable call. And why isn’t it pass interference on the DB? How can the ref say that the DB didn’t prevent Goedert from running a route? Neither player was trying to go anywhere, so how can there be interference? The flag was also way late.

On the Hurts interception he had a RB wide open for a checkdown that goes for big yards, and he had time to go there, but he forced a pass to Pascal in a tight window. I don’t really mind the decision as those are throws top NFL qbs have to make, but in those conditions he had to look for a safer option.

On the plus side, we had a hot route on a blitz! The Jags brought six and Hurts threw to Sanders who almost broke it for a big gain.

Sanders was also much more decisive this week and followed his blocking much better. No dancing in the hole. I wonder if the light has gone on for him that he isn’t getting an extension if he keeps leaving yards on the table. This week was night and day from last week.

We brought Marcus Epps on a safety blitz on the third play of the game and it forced Lawrence to throw to his first read, which went incomplete, when they had a big play available on a mesh route. The Jags never expected it and he came in untouched. It is nice to see us throwing some curveballs on defense.

Josiah Scott was up and down. He and McPhearson need to communicate better. But he did have a really nice read on a screen pass that went incomplete, and another breakup when he was 1v1 with Kirk.

They decided to leave Graham unblocked on a run play thinking they would fool him. Not a great idea. We also got kind of lucky on a screen where Graham dropped into coverage, and he was in perfect position to blow it up. Imagine thinking you have to block a DB and Graham is coming at you full speed.

After Trey Sermon’s big run, they faked to him the next play and Josh Allen came in for a big hit and just kind of bounced off him. Sermon didn’t even flinch. Not sure if this kid has a future, but when you get hit head-on by a 265-pound DE running straight at you and he ends up on the ground, I think that is a good sign.

We blitzed 7 on the Lawrence red zone INT. I love the aggressiveness in the red zone. We have the corners to hold up in man in those situations, and it’s tough to run routes to beat man coverage that close to the goal line with limited time. First Wentz and now Lawrence with key turnovers caused by pressure.

Zach Pascal had a rough game. We lined him up in the backfield and he false started. And then he dropped an easy completion on a roll out. He has to be better. Overall, some bad drops by us, but every team has them.

Overall, a lot of improvement. Obviously the defense was helped by the conditions, but our offense was a lot better in those same conditions. Sanders was better, Opeta and Seumalo were better (nice not having to face two stud DTs) and it was nice to see the WRs blocking on a day when throwing the ball was difficult. There were a lot of extra yards tacked on to runs by their efforts downfield.

Excellent post. I quibble: Seumalo was really good against Washington. Hard for him to be better than he was. In every other way a most excellent post.

Didn't Nick say they won't do that though?

He wouldn't even need to eliminate all the QB runs... just change how frequently he goes to that well, AND the mentality that Hurts runs with.   He doesn't have to cut back and try to run over multiple defenders as much as he does.  He could run out of bounds more often, or slide more often at the end of the line than he does - though sliding can be dangerous in today's NFL as a lot of defenders are following the QB down and hitting them late/jumping on top of them.   I'd rather that he try to run over one defender (especially a DB) than slide and leave himself vulnerable to the head to head contact that's happening far too frequently with QB slides these days... BUT, I'd rather he slide sooner than he does versus taking on 2 or 3 LBs in the middle of the field.

For me, I don't like the number of runs, that's true.   But that distain is heightened by the running style he is using.

What a pick he turned out to be. I had pitchforks out when we drafted him. Add him to the list of people I was way off on during the draft.

I was also highly critical of the pick due to his injury history.   He's proven to be the player everyone said he would be... and has managed to have avoided injury.   Let's hope it continues.  I'm happy to have egg on my face.  And it seems that their medical team got it right.   Kudos.

Goedert raised his arms and engaged with the defender.  Goedert wasn't making an effort to run a route.  Siri even said yesterday it was a timing thing, suggesting that Goedert needs to wait for the ball to be thrown before engaging.

Rest of you post was solid.

The part about Sanders dancing in the hole was also wrong.

A lot of good stuff in that post... but this one isn't accurate.  You can claim it was ticky-tack, but by the letter of the rule, it was OPI.

Goedert was just standing there and could have/should have continued to do so.   And had he done that, it would have not be flagged, and would have been a TD.

BUT... instead, he chose to extend his arms (while standing stationary) and Goedert initiated contact with the DB before the ball was thrown and he was beyond 1 yard of the LOS.  That was the penalty, and ticky tack or not, it was against the rules.

The timing of the flag is irrelevant as well.  1 - he can't throw the flag, until the ball is thrown... so there's not going to be a flag UNTIL after the throw is made.  But more importantly, it looked to me that the official intended to throw the flag as soon as the ball was thrown, but couldn't find the flag right away.  So, he was 'late' throwing the flag.   But, again, regardless of the timeliness of the flag, it was against the rules.

Yup, it's my hill to die on, and the explanation made sense as Goedert does put his arms up (although I would argue that the defender also raised his arms at the same time). But the defender wasn't trying to get around him at all until after the ball was released. He was just kind of standing there. I think for pass interference to be called in that situation, the defensive player has to be actively doing something to try and get to a spot.

I could see the call being made if the defender was trying to get around Goedert and he put his arms on him. But it was pretty clear he was staring straight at Goedert expecting him to make a move, and by the time he realized what was going on, Goedert had him locked up.

I can admit that it could be called by the absolute letter of the law, but this is a far cry from a receiver barreling into a DB at full speed on a crossing pattern. The DB is never trying to get anywhere near the receiver until he has the ball.

Yep, me too.  I had the Eagles picking him in several of my mock drafts at the time.

This is where you're wrong, and the rest of your post is meaningless because it's based off this principle.

To be honest, Mailata tried to tackle him and got hurt.  I don't mind him missing on this one.  I do think the DB just got by him sooner than he expected.

i have no issue with this play ,just wish he would have caught that 4th down pass
