October 9, 20222 yr Tomorrow will be about s disruptive as work will be to my eagle watching for the rest of the season. Game at 4:25. I plan to be home around 5:30 hopefully, and play catch up on the DVR skipping through commercials and halftime. I will ask that you all refrain from posting about the game until about 6pm eastern time just to be safe. Thanks.
October 9, 20222 yr AFAIK tagging the guy after his hand is on the bag means he is safe. From this angle you can clearly see that the left arm was not tagged. From the other angle you can see that the right arm / hand is not touched until after the left hand is on the base. This is clearly and obviously safe. Now if you set up a bureaucracy designed to protect the morons who made bad calls on the field by needing more that clearly seeing the guy is safe to overturn the play then he could be technically out in that pathetic system.

And check out where the umpire is. 100% wrong position. He couldn't have picked a worse place to stand if he tried. Frankly, he should be fined for being in such a wrong position.
October 9, 20222 yr The best way to fix plays like this is to get rid of all but one ump and make him an ex-player who is in some kind of shape. You can use eye in the sky this without the old fat guy in the shot and its an easier call. We have not needed umps for balls and strikes for about 10 years. An eye in the sky official can make every call better than a fat egomaniac on the field. They can look at 1st and 3rd base angles on check swings instead of a guy who guesses now and only asks the 1st or 3rd ump if he is in the mood. You need refs on the field for football, baseball, and hockey. Field refs in baseball are inferior to cameras and literally get in the way.
October 9, 20222 yr Phillies home playoff game Fri/Sat and Eagles/Cowboys SNF. What a time it will be. Wish I was up there.
October 9, 20222 yr FYI, both angles are available on Twitter. Advance them frame by frame and show us where he is tagged before his hand is on the bag. You can't because it did not happen. I get that people have trouble processing 2 separate angle videos and applying the information to make a whole picture. Apparently some of them work for MLB.

You're entitled to see it how you want to see it, but the result favors the latter. I understand your perspective. You have been very clear.
October 9, 20222 yr When a fan watches replay they look to see what happened. (bias while watching replay may vary) When a MLB umpire watches replay they bring confirmation bias to the equation and look for reasons to prove they or their buddies were right. If I saw Harper get tagged before his hand was on the bag then I would say so. I can't because it did not happen. DeVonta Smith was clearly OOB on the long pass that stood last week. I am happy it happened but it was the wrong call. The Phillies won anyway. I have no interest in pretending Harper was safe if he was out. I am saying he was safe because he was safe.
October 9, 20222 yr Not to be obtuse — but some of you guys read like you’re new to watching baseball. Before replay came in it was the norm that if the ball beat the base runner to the bag, the runner was usually called out. These umpires who’ve been around 15-20+ years and keep their jobs because of their union probably aren’t going to make the transition to calling the game a different way. Now, if the replay clearly shows that the runner is safe, and MLB chooses to call the runner out even after viewing the replays, then that’s more a problem with MLB and the replay system itself than anything else. Keep in mind, unless I’m wrong, it’s still the on-field umpiring crew that views the replay and makes the final call on the field.

Pretty sure you’re wrong. Replay decisions are made by the higher ups at league headquarters, not by the guys on the field.

All instant replay reviews are examined by umpires at the Replay Command Center in New York City, who have the final decision as to whether to uphold or overturn the initial call. Yup. Wrong 8 times today; that’s a personal record …. for the least.
October 9, 20222 yr What a weird schedule the Eagles have this year. TJ Watt was pretty likely to be back from his chest injury for the week 8 matchup. He just had knee surgery after getting it tweaked in preseason so now he's probably out until week 10

October 9, 20222 yr Seems like Sermon is going to be relegated to an afterthought today. Too bad, I think his potential upside is far higher than Scott. I’d much prefer to see more of Sermon moving forward

But, the worst part of this was his positioning. I don't have a problem with an ump missing a call. It happens, they are human and will make mistakes. However, not being in the right place to make the call is the issue. He should have been in the infield before the ball was hit, and shouldn't have moved afterwards, as there was clearly no call to be made in the outfield. The call itself bothers me less than the process by which it came about.
October 9, 20222 yr Quote The Phillies will have Ranger Suárez on Tuesday in Game 1 of the NL Division League Series, with Wheeler and Nola in Games 2 and 3 on regular rest. The Phillies have momentum. They are frisky. They do not know any better. They have rewritten everything about this team’s outlook. "A lot of these guys haven’t been in this situation,” Thomson said. "And that’s what I’m really proud about. There’s so many guys that have never played in the playoffs, and they played really well. You know, it’s like the moment didn’t get the best of them, and I’m happy about that.” From The Athletic
