I can tell you with absolute confidence it wasn't because he was afraid of Trump's retaliation given that it's the Republicans that are so aggressively pushing a cut back on our support for Ukraine. I can also tell you absolutely that Putin regrets that decision to invade now given Ukrainian troops have now occupy Russian territory largely due to the massive international support.
