Couldn't agree more with the notion that Biden's campaign naively bought into the notion that the media was "in the tank for the Dems" only to learn the hard way that the media is only in the tank for themselves. It was evident in 2016, but 2020 gave them a false sense of security and they paid the price for it now in 2024. Good to hear Harris isn't poised to make the same mistakes. The media wants ratings. Biden didn't provide ratings. So they hated him. Trump does, so they love him. Kamala likely does bring ratings, but F the press. They want to personally select the president based on how frequently they stir the media cycle so they can punch air while she circumvents them.

A lot of people are too young to remember what the news was like in the 70s, before it became a for-profit business. It consisted mostly of 30-minute network broadcasts with the objective of providing information to the public, and the competition of it was who could get the big story on the air faster -- the "scoop". If you could get the scoop ahead of other networks, you became a trusted resource who could provide the most timely information. Going back and watching the original news broadcasts of the JFK assassination will give you a feel for how hurriedly journalists worked to get information verified first, then out to the public. With the advent of 24/7 news stations came the "news for profit" era of journalism and media. Ted Turner launched CNN in 1980, but even a few years before that 60 Minutes was bringing in big ratings in the late 70s. Over the past few decades, as you said, driving clicks and attention is more lucrative than getting the story right. News networks broadcast with whichever slant their advertisers want -- and that's what is messaged to the people. FOX willfully lying to their viewers for the sake of ratings is a great example. As far as Trump goes, though, the media are like lemmings and hover around him because there is a large segment of the public that wants it -- either because they idolize him or detest him. The Republican Party bears 100% responsibility in him still being politically relevant, IMO.

Obviously the right wing media is just straight North Korean propaganda but the regular media is at fault too. CNN gave that dipsheet a town hall less than a week after he was proven in court to be a rapist. A F'ing rapist. And they acted like it was just another presidential candidate talking to potential voters.
August 14, 20241 yr One of my friends used to be a white house correspondent pre Trump. He describes it as a pretty boring gig. Lots of idealistic young journalists who signed up because of the prestige of being in the White House coming to face the reality that their questions and responses are usually pretty limited in scope and rarely iliciting anything more than a well rehearsed talking point. I'll have to pick his brain about what he thinks about the current dynamic.

They don't have proper leadership at the top and I think their evaluation of on-air talent is out to lunch. Kaitlin Collins is okay as a correspondent but wasn't qualified at all to do the town hall (as you said, dumb decision even to give one to Trump). Tapper and Bash were two of the worst choices to do the Presidential Debate; Tapper is more concerned with being self-important and showing off his sketches than anything else. That network needs more folks like John King and Wolf Blitzer. John Berman isn't bad, either, and Anderson Cooper is decent, not great. They should leave the left to CNBC (who does it better) and the right to FOX (who should be banned, really). Focus on being balanced and providing news information, and appealing to the center.

CNN has been leaning right since they came under new leadership. All of their on air talent is forbidden from using the term "the big lie" when talking about election denialism. John Harwood was fired for calling Trump a "dishonest demagog". They also slanted their polls right, oversampling republicans by huge margins. Then pointing to the rigged polls as proof of Trump's "commanding lead" in the race. They're fox news lite at this point.

August 14, 20241 yr It’s early still. I’d bet most, if not all 50 something of those chairs get filled!
August 14, 20241 yr Ooooh another airing of grievances tomorrow at 4:30. Let's see if all the networks take the bait again, giving him an hour + of uninterrupted campaigning.

August 14, 20241 yr Ok maybe don't release that but everything else from the Trump Files needs to come to light.
