I don’t think the story has been told yet about how/why the Republican Party went back to Trump after January 6th cooled down for them.  I don’t believe it was as simple as McCarthy going down to Maralago to visit.  McCarthy couldn’t even keep his Speaker job, after taking 15 ballots just to appoint him.  He doesn’t carry that much clout or influence to reinstall Trump

Nah. It’s about the right hating soldiers they can’t keep on their leash. MAGA sees the military as props, much like Trump does. I never attacked anybody's military service.  If you had any reading comprehension skills, you would have been able to see that I wasn't attacking his service and said it was his only redeeming factor.

Well, I think the Senate leadership thought that actually impeaching Trump would cause more damage to the party as a whole than it would Trump, and they thought that Trump would just go away and that nobody in their right minds would actually vote for him again.

The pullout of Afghanistan was botched all to hell, and if there's one thing that the US public doesn't like, it's international embarrassment.  If you look at Biden's approval ratings, they went negative post the pull out and never recovered.  Add in the inflation (even though Trump contributed to it just as much with the bananas amount of Covid relief dollars that were pumped out in 2020).  Then you add ind the fact that on face value Biden has the appearance of an old confused guy who is in over his head (im pretty sure he's got parkinsons and actually has all his mental faculties about him, he just can't find the words, but Joe and Jane Six Pack aren't going to bother to put the work in to come to that conclusion). And Fox convinced all their watchers that Biden is without a doubt the worst politician that ever existed, and he's the worst thing for the US.  So it turns into this thing where they start hating Biden.  IMO, he's not a good president, but he's not in the conversation for the worst.

Then you have the fact that more people are independent than ever, and with that you have less people that are registered.  Which means that the per capita rating of the rubes just went up.  And statistically not a lot of people vote in the primaries, so the fanatical rubes have an even higher per capita.  So we're stuck with this a-hole.

(I'm half tempted to do an analysis of primary results in open versus closed primaries.)

 

The more time that goes on, the more that people memory hole stuff that happened.  Or they're dumb enough to actually think that Harris is going make it so that John Q. Taxpayer is on the hook for illegal alien dong removal services.

 

tl;dr: Senate Rs dropped the ball, people forgot, Biden got a worse rap than he actually deserved, and people left the GOP and gave the rubes more control.

One thing of note, during the debate Trump accused Harris rally goers as paid actors.  Makes me wonder, due to the whole every accusation a confession.

Ok, so I looked at some rough data of the primaries, and compared the open to the closed primaries up until Haley dropped out of the race (3/6).  There were 22 events, but I dropped it down to 21 because MO changed theirs to a caucus, and I can't find any voting data on the caucus there.  I also didn't include NV in this total, because they had both a primary and a caucus, for whatever reason I don't know, and Trump was by his lonesome in the caucus.  Also of note is that there are fully open primaries where anyone can get a ballot, and semi-open where just the independents can get a ballot, so I just called both of those types open.  I also didn't look at DC because I think like 3 people voted in that primary (sorry @TEW) I just looked at the percentages Trump won of each state as the comparison. 

 

Ok so out of 19 contests, Trump averaged 68.4% of the vote.

When looking at the 5 closed primaries, Trump averaged 75.9% of the vote.  (UT is closed, but they voted for Trump at 56.4%, when if you take UT out of the equation, it goes to 80.8%.) 

For the remaining 14 primaries, Trump averaged 65.8% of the vote.

 

So states are more or less 10-15% less stupid when they let independents vote in the primaries.  That's lower than I thought.
