Two boxes of cereal for the kids or two boxes of granola bars vs one kind of thing. Use the pantry and freezer as food storage. Same with medicine for the kids if possible.

I kinda knew what was coming so I was well stocked on food and supplies, but the night the NBA cancelled the season I decided to just make a Wal-Mart run after work to top up. The shelves were completely devoid of anything canned or frozen. But you know what they did have? All the meat, fresh veggies, broths, and seasonings you could find. I just grabbed all that ish and ate crock pot meals for like two months. Moral of the story is even if there is a panic, as long as you're not a lazy POS and you can cook you'll be fine.
