Actually think the penalties are one of the reasons he was inactive today. While Barnett hasn't committed anything this year, there was a play after which he appeared hot last week and I was screaming at the TV for him not to do something dumb (ala Byrad today). He controlled himself but then they showed Siri and he wasn't happy.

I also think the plan all year would have been to slowly increase Nolan's snaps as he gets more comfortable. Barnett is the natural place for those snaps to come from and then you activate Johnson for ST. This was always coming but Barnett is still solid insurance. If Sweat is injured he'd get the bulk of run D snaps - coaches wont want to go heavy with Nolan on those just yet.

It’s also clear that Barnett has no future here. He’s just another guy. One could argue them giving him the snaps prior hurt Graham from getting more effective snaps and hindered Smith’s growth although some of that could have been him slowly returning from injuries. At this point to me it seems like the Eagles have been willing to part ways with this guy twice. Once before the season started and also before the trading deadline and no takers. It just looks like the Eagles are turning the page on Barnett. He had 8 weeks out there to try and do something. Smith went out there and had to battle one of the best tackles in the game. He got worked, but he was out there fighting. He needed to deal with the best. It was a great learning experience for him. It accomplishes nothing to have Barnett out there. He has no future with this team. Frankly is Sweat goes down Barnett would be the last option I think they should use. Smith should get those snaps. He’s the future and not Barnett.

I agree Barnett has no future here. Smith is the future and likely #3 DE next year.

They'll probably sign some vet to be #4 (if Graham retires) and bring a development guy to be the #5 DE and maybe compete for those #4 snaps next year.

But lets say Sweat is injured - they just aren't going to play a rookie for 60 snaps a game (like Sweat did last week), And no way Barnett gets all those snaps either. They would be split amongst Graham, Smith and Barnett. Probably in that order with Barnett's snaps leaning towards the obvious rushing downs as opposed to passing ones which is more likely where they'd use more of Smith and his athleticism.

I think it's pretty clear his snap counts were a result of them trying to increase his value for a trade. Now that the deadline is over no point in putting him out there to play like trash. He's here for depth now and if he gets another opportunity the onus is on him to increase his value for post Eagles life.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carter get some time on the outside before they would go back to Barnett in any capacity. Him getting snaps is mostly an exercise in futility. I could also see them using Milton Williams perhaps even some snaps for Cox. Like @judunno mentioned they tried to get some trade value out of Barnett and it didn’t work. Howie Roseman could not find someone to trade for Barnett. He got someone to take Street, but nothing for Barnett. There was also no one who wanted Barnett when he was basically a free agent before the Eagles resigned him. There’s little to no value there.

I'm thinking if he managed to get two sacks... showed a little productivity someone would have bit

Yeah I think this is reasonably fair. Barnett was a good rotational end. The penalty thing was also overblown.

I thought he would be a useful rotation piece this year. I was wrong. He has clearly lost a step since the injury. If Reddick or Smith get injured we are in trouble. As you say they would need Graham, Barnett and Smith to all play a bit more, but we are Super Bowl contenders and Smith clearly isn’t ready to play a lot. Suspect they would use Carter and Williams a fair amount at end. Let’s hope everyone stays healthy.

The other factor is some of the teams that may have been interested in him, may not be contenders this year and had no reason to acquire him during the season for resources when they can just wait until free agency next season. As pointed out, he'll likely have to sign a prove-it type deal for cheap and there are a few teams with ex-coaches that might like to bring him in for camp energy if nothing else.

"Barnett's four-game penalty-free streak ended Sunday with a costly 3rd-down offsides that turned a 3rd-and-6 into an easily converted 3rd-and-1 and helped lead to a Chargers 4th-quarter touchdown in a game the Eagles ultimately lost by three points.”

"In his one interview this year -- early last month -- Barnett acknowledged that he has to reduce his penalties.

"It's something I need to correct and I continue to work on," Barnett said in a rare interview with reporters on Friday afternoon. "Can't put my team in a tough position, even if it's 5 yards, 10, whatever it is. If I'm hurting the team in that way, we're not focused on the main goal, which is winning. So I need to correct that issue."

So much for that weak bs narrative that Barnett’s penalties never really hurt the Eagles or that they weren’t a big deal. They were a big enough deal that the player himself said he needs to cut them down. The guy has more career penalties than sacks, (26 to 21.5) but nope no big deal. The Eagles benched this player, because he’s not brining anything of value to the table other than not getting penalties and by the way he hasn’t been called for anything this season, but there were some plays where Barnett was late piling on where he could have been hit with a penalty. Time to stop overhyping this guy. He is now where he belongs. Riding the pine.

Eagles' Derek Barnett fined for second unnecessary roughness penalty in two weeks

Barnett had a low block on Nate Gerry's interception return for a touchdown in Eagles' Week 5 win.

Derek Barnett insists he's not a dirty football player. The NFL feels a bit differently when it comes to the Philadelphia Eagles defensive end. Per Pro Football Talk, Barnett was fined $10,527 as a result from a low block on New York Jetsguard Alex Lewis during Nate Gerry's interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter of the Eagles' win over the Jets.

Barnett was accessed a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness. The penalty was Barnett's second for unnecessary roughness in as many weeks, the first being when Barnett came in on Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams late and knocked him out of the game with a concussion. Barnett was fined $28,075 for the helmet-to-helmet hit.

I know just completely overblown! What’s wrong with the league? Didn’t they know Barnett’s penalties aren’t that big a deal?

"The big news is that Barnett is a healthy scratch; that was not expected! But it’s not a surprise in the sense that he’s failed to contribute much for some time now. The Eagles’ 2017 first-round pick has failed to log a stat in six out of his eight games this season.”

But there was that video made that one time when he almost made a play! About as useful of a video of JJAW running around making not catches l 😂

JPP was out there. I'm not sure if he still is but that would have been a better move.

There’s been some rumors about Howie adding him.

just waive him rip off the disappointing 1st round bandaid and be done with it

We can't cut him, his contract is one of Howie's void year specials and if we cut him his cap hit rockets from $2.25 mill to $12mill and even if we only eat half that because it's after June 1st, it's a $4million extra cap hit when we only have $3million in cap space.

Didn't know that.  no harm keeping him in the press box the rest of the season unless he continues to act out, then just send him home

We probably shouldn't jump to conclusions on "personal reasons." He did practice all week, so I'm not sure what this "acting out" is referring to. Most of the time, "personal reasons" has something to do with a family member or close friend. We've also seen a couple Eagles players need some time off to deal with anxiety over the last few years. He was a healthy scratch last week and we are still in really good shape on the D-line, so let him take care of his personal matter. It's no big deal.

This thread can die and go away now?

@brkmsn we sure could do with Barnett at the moment. He’s playing lights out for the Texans. And no penalties as far as I’m aware 😂

He's just an example of how irrational the Philly media gets and how they manage to influence the fans with false narratives. It's true he wasn't being asked to play much while he was here, but one can sure make a sound argument that we haven't rested our pass rushers enough through the season. He switched teams, has seen his snap count steadily increase, is being moved to the left and right side and has been a great addition for the Texans. Meanwhile in the last 4 games, he's been more productive than any player on our D-Line. We have to keep in mind that Barnett has fresh legs after hardly being used all year and that our guys aren't getting enough rest and are compounding the problem by failing to make plays to get off the field on defense.

Last 4 games:

Barnett --- 2.5 sacks, 16 tackles, 7 TFL, 10 QB hits, 1 PD

Sweat ----- 0 sacks, 11 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 QB hits, 0 PD

Reddick --- 2 sacks, 8 tackles, 3 TFL, 6 QB hits, 0 PD

N. Smith --- 0 sacks, 8 tackles, 0 TFL, 0 QB hits, 0 PD

J. Carter --- 2 sacks, 4 tackles, 2 TFL, 2 QB hits, 0 PD

F. Cox ------ 2 sacks, 12 tackles, 1 TFL, 3 QB hits, 1 PD

Williams --- 0 sacks, 13 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 QB hit, 1 PD

J. Davis ---- 0 sacks, 10 tackles, 0 TFL, 0 QB hits, 0 PD

... But Barnett was "hot garbage" and "a bum" by folks around here that get their opinions from BGN and their weekly "5 players that must go" articles. Heaven forbid we have little used backups to turn to to get our best players more rest in a long season. They must be so proud that he's gone ...

I was under the impression that Barnett forced his way out of here. He was a healthy scratch the week before he left. I presumed he was pissed over playing time and began to make himself a nuisance. Yes, we could have used him for depth had he been willing.
