There are several parallels between religion and sports fandom.  Humans are spiritual by nature.  When you think of religion, terms like 'faith', 'belief', 'passion', and 'community' come to mind.  Those are not so distant from being a fan, or rather, fanatic.  We have faith in our team, passionately root them on, and share the experience with a community of similar beliefs.  (We're here, on a message board, discussing a game.)

There is the old joke..."Only <insert team name> and Billy Graham can make 50,000 people stand up and yell 'Jesus Christ'."

Agreed

This is what the league is looking for as an excuse to ban the play.

There's no shot they ban QB sneaks

So the Castallanos trade talks, the guy had 29 HR, 106 RBIs for the Phils this year with a .271. That's NOT insignificant production, who are you replacing that with if he's moved?

Think the goal would be move harper back to RF and bring back Rhys. That’s what they’d likely do. Furthermore castellanos would likely bring back a pen piece and prospect. Further allocate his money to Rhys which then opens up money to spend on someone like josh hader in FA.

kimbrel’s disaster in game 4 was really the turning point even if they won game 5. That’s what really allowed the dbacks to believe they could do anything in this series. However the 7th inning after Rojas got the triple and they went up 5-2 and couldn’t get a shutdown inning the bottom half began it.

Very true.  And that's on the entire Phillies organization... but mostly on the current pitching coach and Thomson.   Apparently Kerkering had not been asked to throw on back to back nights EVER at any level of the organization.   How can you make the first time he's asked to do it be in THAT moment?  Just goes to show how thin they thought their bullpen was.  Lorenzen would have been a better option, given that he was super fresh and Kerkering SHOULD have been on the DNP list for the night.   The NLCS is not the time or place to experiment with a rookie who just came up to the majors.   Poor roster management.    Equally... how could he have NEVER been asked to pitch back to back at ANY level?  That's something that has to happen at EACH level before moving him up to the next level, doesn't it?   As a reliever, you need to be able to pitch back to back, especially as a youngster.

#1 seed now becomes a race between the Eagles and Lions.

This is a game that looked pretty good before the season started, but not so much now.

Darnold sucks and the whiners will trot out an already half broken CMC to try and save them. The Bengals are coming off a bye, but have been injured and pretty bad this year.

Well, that is EXACTLY what I was worried about happening to Hurts and why I have been against the frequency that the Eagles use it.  BUT... the issue is that player literally launched himself HEAD FIRST blindly into the pile.  That's textbook 'spearing'.

13% blitzing against the dolphins with 23% blitz on the season which is 6th lowest ...

Normally I'd have a problem with that as I hat the rush 4 drop 7 every play soft shell bend dint break, but Desai has done a good job of living up his looks, Gannon And Schwartz before him  didn't botz much either but it seemed they also did t switch up their looks in the back 7,(6) and dropped them into the same zone over and over

Desai showed tua alot, lining up in. Man looking then dropping into a cover 2, which the eagles have played cover 2 the least of any team.

They also" pressed" at times dropped Riddick at times, dropped the LBs into different zones was just a really good game plan by DeSai and well executed.

Having said that looks like Ricks made a case for more PT, he was great.

I was worried about Desai after the first couple games but he's been great and on point👍

49ers have a tough schedule too.  They will be sitting on 3 losses after this weekend.  They are no longer in the race.

I think San Fran handles Cincinnati.

General soreness may not need to be reported.

I'm sure Lane's ankle is still tender.

This.

DeVonta Smith is also not on the injury report. Because he played Sunday and is not estimated to be limited in practice this week. Same with Lane, same with Hurts. So they don't need to be on the report.

Blankenship missed the last game with an injury. So he's going to appear on this weeks which he is as a FP. When he plays Sunday and if there's no set backs, he'll also be off the report despite probably still being sore.

Hurts got dinged up. It's nothing more than that.

Any replacement you get for him is likely to be worse, so I doubt you'd be fixing this issue with someone else.

In fairness Rhys has a better approach than castellanos from the stand point he’s not going to give you bad at bats frequently.  The Phillies talent wise had better hitters than the dbacks. But the dbacks gave professional at bats. Even their outs were hard to get. The Phillies particularly castellanos were just awful approaches and at bats. Castellanos striking out on 3-4 pitches is an awful at bat. Rhys rarely gives those type of at bats. Why Rhys might not hit and is streaky, those professional at bats don’t just help him. It helps the guy in front and behind him. Cause pitchers know if they don’t get the guy in front of him it’s gonna be a long grueling at bat. And even if hoskins fails and makes the pitcher work, it benefits the guy behind him when he’s more exhausted and likely to make a mistake.

think about this, marsh was unbelievable in this series. So castellanos might have had the best protection of anyone in this series cause of marsh being on fire. He was 0-23 after his first at bat of the series. Castellanos in his at bat in the 4th had a pitch right down Broadway and whiffed. That’s the issue with him. When he gets into slumps is when he swings at everything trying to hit and then it leads to him missing at hitters pitches which become just atrocious at bats.

said this in the Phillies thread multiple times this year, was a huge fan of the castellanos signing at the time. But really his approach at the plate is an issue. Cause he’s making up his mind before the ball is thrown whether to swing or not. Can’t play that way. It makes it easier for a pitcher cause can just throw him garbage and there’s a good chance he’s made up his mind to swing especially when he gets into a slump.

If he suffered a concussion during the game why was he allowed to stay in the game ???

Can't say we want to ban a play to protect players then keep those same players in the game when they are concussed, one either does or doesn't care about player safety, cNt have it both ways...

I also feel people are forgetting how many times we hear after a season is over that player x was dealing with y injury all season and they didn't show up on the injury report for it. Alshon allegedly played all of 2017 with a torn rotator cuff and didn't show up on the injury report for it.

Purdy injury might give Eagles some breathing room from SF for 1st seed. That Detroit schedule is cake though

Unfortunately they have a bye immediately after the bengals

The 49ers can absolutely beat this version of the Bengals with Darnold, especially if Trent Williams plays. Obviously, root for the Bengals.

We shouldn't sleep on Washington. They always show up against us.

When I brought it up, I mentioned bringing Rhys back.... so my answer is Rhys Hoskins.

Rhys Hoskins  2022: 30 HR,  79 RBI, 72 BB,  0.246 BA, 0.332 OBP and 0.794 OPS.
Castellanos    2023:  29 HR, 107 RBI, 36 BB, 0.272 BA, 0.311 OBP, and 0.788 OPS.

The biggest differences is the RBI (which I would say is much more about the place in the lineup... Batting #2 for Rhys versus #4-#7 for Castellanos), and OBP.  Rhys gets on base more than Nick.  Nick also strikes out more, though Rhys has his share as well.

But, the benefits of Rhys are driving up pitch counts, providing rest for his own pitcher in a short inning.  He is a much more patient hitter than Castellanos.  That helps slow the younger guys down too, and Rhys is a year younger than Castellanos, if that matters.

And Castellanos would be a trade chip, as you point out... he had good numbers, was an All-Star this past year.  He'll have a market and that might return a quality middle reliever.

Yup, good point.

The only time the NFL starts to question it is a case like Bijan Robinson where he wasn't on the report at all but clearly limited in game. (not a prefect example as he was more timing related, but you get the gist).

There were multiple things they did wrong with Orion. They continued in game 3 and 4 to just throw his sweeper to set up his sinker. Issue is he had absolutely no control of his sweeper and the dbacks just said wait for a sinker and don’t swing at his sweeper. His sinker is very good. Needed to work opposite. By that start with his sinker that he had good control with to get ahead of the count. Put the dbacks batters behind in counts then use the sweeper as it would’ve been more effective. Unfortunately they didn’t actually do that. That’s on Thomson, jt and pitching coach. Add on kid never should’ve been asked to be out there two nights in a row. Like kimbrel shouldn’t have been out there after throwing 24 pitches the day before at his age (in general shouldn’t cause he was done). This is the whole Robertson thing in 2022 where Thomson didn’t learn his lesson.

Said in a previous message I’m surprised brogdon wasn’t used in September to see what he could offer. With walker having his velocity down, horrible finish to the year and not likely to be used until nlcs (if then) should’ve used brogdon in September and if he looked good had him. He was actually good last postseason.

all that said, bullpen might have been worse than last year. Really only Hoffman, strahm and Alvarado anyone felt super confident in. Dominguez, soto, Orion (by the end), kimbrel were inconsistent or done.

They were gonna ban it anyway but it'll be interesting to see the language they have to use because then it has to be called when a RB is pushed. And can a D player push the back of another D player during a tackle?
