New England is going to have a top 5 defense this year so I’m not in panic mode with the offense yet. Hurts had a couple of misses with Goedert. But his absence all game didn’t make sense.

Those are the only RBs we have.  I said it all last year, and I'll say it this year too I guess.  When your 'power back' is your QB, you've got a problem on offense.  

 

The Hurts fumble is on Hurts, because he needed to get down BEFORE contact on that run.   It was first down, he'd already picked up 8 yards or so... get down and protect the ball, protect your body.  But, the fact that the coaching staff felt he was the best option to carry the rock in that situation tells you everything you need to know about what they really think about their RBs.  

Gonna try and be positive and say it's week 1 football, soft preseason, bad weather, and prep time belichick with a good Pats D. With that said...they better come out on fire against the Vikings. Hurts looked like 2021 Hurts, Felt like Gannon was still coaching, and Gainwell isn't a feature back. They were on something for having Penny inactive and Swift only getting limited snaps.

yeah, I agree but I still feel like the Eagles took a step back with the running backs this year. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

The offensive coaches to actually make a game plan for Thursday.  Today looked like they had no coaching staff at all.

True. But they all count. They didn't play well. Imagine if they do. Lot of new faces with coaching and players. They will be better. Lotta bad football this week. No preseason makes for rusty execution. Lot of problems can be fixed I think with better play calling. And including Goedert, Swift and Penny more. Will have to see about linebacker and safety. Want to see how Ellis and Brown played on their reps. Seemed to stabilize a little when they were in. Howie is gonna need to tweak a little most likely before trade deadline.

Sadly Nakobe Dean didn't make it through one game. The plan at LB was always dubious

Bradberry definitely got checked for a concussion because he was bleeding from the mouth. Need him to be ready for Thursday, but even if he can't go, I feel confident about Jobe. 

Slay should be on Jefferson all game like last year's matchup.

I acknowledged they sucked. But it is encouraging to suck and still score 25 points. That's ugly Patriots football. We kinda got sucked into all of that. Coaching was awful today. Burning timeouts everywhere. Just happy with the win against Bellichek and on the road. 

Penny > Scott.  Penny should be active.  Is Penny the missing piece from today’s game?  No.  But when you want to go run heavy, you don’t feature Gainwell.  The entire point of our RB personnel philosophy is waves of fresh backs.  You do Gainwell, Swift, and Penny in rotation.  

It seemed like after the first drive, the rbs were only used for dump offs. 
 

brian Johnson’s play calling was terribad in the first half other than the first half. It was better in the 2nd but still only predictable instead of just "wth?”. Call some running plays for Fs sake. 
 

jalen didn’t play his A or B game. Part of it was NE’s defense. They were making him move with their rush up the middle.

They expect early season games to be ugly in a 17-game season.  They won and can correct.  They just don't want wear & tear in preseason

Sure looked like they were trying to save things for Thursday Night, including energy.   Offensive play calling seemed very vanilla.   They relied almost exclusively on Gainwell to run the ball, with Hurts in the mix.   Where was Swift?  There seemed to be nothing game planned to get the ball in his hands.  Why make the trade if you aren't going to use him?  Hopefully, they actually have things ready for him, but chose to keep them in moth balls.   Where was Goedert in the game plan?  Also seemed to be missing.

Defensively, did Nolan Smith even get on the field for a snap?   I saw him on the field during some ST snaps, but weird that they'd not have some package for him as a pass rusher.   Maybe he did get some snaps on defense, and I just missed it.  But, he should get more opportunity as the year progresses.

 

There is a game in 4 days.  Good news is that it is at home.   Bad news is that the Eagles didn't look good or in sync.  And they don't have much time to get in sync before the next game.  They will have a little extra time for the third game though.  Almost a mini-bye week with a Thursday - Monday gap between games.
