Our PS call ups will be interesting. We will need Morrow on Thursday. Siposs is a given. Would think Covey is too.

With that, I almost think Dean to the IR is a must from a roster construction standpoint.

Seems like they were playing way off and too soft.  I'd imagine it's by design more so than the players.

They blew a lot of coverages. They don't know Desai's system yet and NE exposed it. They'll figure it out as they get more games under their belt.

After watching a lot of football yesterday, I think the 2 most surprising outcomes to me were the Browns and the Rams winning the way they did. The Browns defense is legit. However, I also didn’t think the bengals would only scored three points in that game. I get burrow hasn’t played in a while and was dealing with that calf injury. But the Browns just took it to the Bengals offense.  the rams I could see them beating the Seahawks. Frankly, I kind of think Geno Smith had a fluke year in 2022 and he’s not nearly as good as how he played last year. But the Rams really dominated the Seahawks in the second half on the road in seattle. And did it without kupp. If Matt Stafford can stay healthy, they have a chance to be a playoff team in the NFC cause if he’s healthy he’s still one of the better QBs in the nfc. Especially if they get kupp back at some point.

I am more of a wait and see on Swift. He’s dynamic and explosive type of player. He can hot homeruns if he hits the hole. I am not sure anyone on the team at rb has that type of explosiveness (penny did at one point but I’m not sure what he is now after the injuries). The reason why I say I’m wait and see is that there was a lot of noise before and even after the trade from sources inside the lions’ organization that they were not happy with his ability to hit the hole and take the yards that were there. Besides the injury, they kept with jamaal Williams as the bell cow once swift got healthy cause they preferred Williams who was better at taking what the oline provided.

I’m hoping that’s not the case as the season continues on, but reading lions reporters and some podcasts that was the biggest proponent of the lions dealing him besides durability. I actually think Penny (assuming he hasnt lost a step) is the best actual runner.

I'm going to say this with confidence... both Swift and Penny are better runners than Gainwell. Maybe they trust Gainwell more in pass pro than Swift or something.

I like Evans and I think he's better than Cunningham.

They'll probably IR Dean and sign Siposs tho Covey is actually the best of the bunch at his position. That leaves them 2 call ups. Siposs had a pretty good day but his problem has been cold weather & critical games so none of that is magically solved

Nice... and I bet we have guys that didn't get 25 snaps that are up there too... like Smith.

Tbh none of our backs are great in pass pro. Re-watching the game yesterday it was awful but it’s been an issue even last year. Really haven’t had a good pass pro back in a few years.

There's a lot of dreck on this practice squad currently. If I'm Howie, I am stacking higher numbers with safeties and linebackers and see if we could hit on a Blankenship or Ellis type even. This may become a problem. Communication issues aside, Evans and Cunningham are liabilities in pass coverage. Need more speed there.

Evans was a starter for the Falcons last year, but he's just as bad as Cunningham in coverage. He's tough though.

I mean only 112.6 seems better than anyone we had on Sunday.

OK. Well, after a night of restless sleep (not because of the game, I always struggle to sleep on Sunday) and time for reflection, here's where I am at after watching one of the most depressing wins in a long time.

1. Well, it was a win. Belichick had 5 months to get ready to stop our offense, and we frankly stopped ourselves. The Pats D is legit, and I'll be interested to see them in week 2 against Tua and that Dolphins attack.

2. I wanted to murder Brian Johnson after the game, but it seems to be equal parts Johnson going way too conservative in Q2 and Hurts really not seeing the field well once we went back to passing. Johnson seemed to go super conservative at 16-0 with the rain, but it killed all our offensive flow. Then, when we tried to ramp it back up after the Pats closed to 2 points, we were completely out of sync.

3. Yeah -- Jalen was bad yesterday. Didn't see the field, bailed out of the pocket too early, wasn't driving his throws. I did like him getting down and avoiding taking hits...right up until the fumble. Guys are going to study this tape and try and keep throwing this at him -- he needs to be better and more decisive. That looked like 2021 Hurts.

4. Justin Evans, meet the bench. Bench, meet Justin Evans. Guy definitely was at fault on the TD given up by Bradberry, and seemed to be out of position all game. How could Sydney be worse? Or even Edmunds. Blankenship played well (that TD on him was a perfect pass), but Evans is brutal.

5. I just don't understand why we weren't more aggressive in coverage and up tight. The line was getting pressure and the ball was out fast. But Desai seemed to channel his inner Gannon and play soft.

Yet, I'm encouraged. Why?

1. That's a game we lose in past years

2. I'm thinking/hoping that was knocking off rust. Other teams like the Bengals and Seahawks looked much worse.

3. Jalen Carter is a MONSTER, and Jordan Davis seems to have vastly improved

I think/hope we will improve during this beginning part of the schedule against weaker competition. Johnson, Desai and Hurts need to find their sea legs.

I agree with all of this. They won despite playing an awful game on the road in bad weather against arguably the greatest defensive mind of all time with months to prepare.

On a sadder note, Jack Conklin tore his ACL/MCL and is done for the Browns this year.

One more:

I would not have called special teams saving the day, but...here we are.

Also the new Evans means we will have a new Evans to hate on Thursday night.

Lots of rust yesterday to deal with.

But there were positives here.

Goedert was open all game and Hurts will see the film.

Reddick did very little. That won't be the norm. Gets a mulligan for no preseason and surgery on the thumb.

Siposs was competent. Special teams recovered nicely after rocky start.

Will be harder to run on this defense. Carter and Davis were studs. Will get more snaps going forward.

Jobe may be good CB depth for the room. Played well as gunner too.

Sirianni went with vets and was vanilla. But Brown and N. Smith will be eased in and help this defense before too long.

Faced adversity on last drive with no Cox, Bradbury and Dean. And figured out a way to pull it out despite a bad Hurts turnover. Feared the defense could be gassed at that point and they held up.

Swift and Penny will be playing more going forward and definitely help out. We know Gainwell isn't a bell cow running back. They will be rotating this group a bunch throughout a 17 game season.

Our Wide Receivers don't drop anything. Even in the rain. What a refreshing change! Watkins looked more confident.

You don't win that game, with out doing something right and making some clutch timely plays. Missed at least 2 easy interceptions as well with tight coverage in secondary.

Thank you for pointing out that Cox, Bradbury, and Dean were on the sidelines when the D secured the W.

We got two today!

This felt a LOT like the Colts game last year. After that game, we woke up and smashed people until Hurts got injured. Hopefully this was another wakeup call.

There were a couple blitzes they had yesterday where they would send a linebacker who was already off the line of scrimmage by at least five yards. The blitz didn't come close to getting home and it left the middle of the field wide open for Jones to carve them up. These linebackers aren't fast enough to have those types of blitzes. I think Sydney can be a game-wrecker coming down on some blitzes. I don't expect him to take the starting job yet at safety, but there's no reason why you can't put him into some packages and have him close down.
