There were a couple blitzes they had yesterday where they would send a linebacker who was already off the line of scrimmage by at least five yards. The blitz didn't come close to getting home and it left the middle of the field wide open for Jones to carve them up. These linebackers aren't fast enough to have those types of blitzes. I think Sydney can be a game-wrecker coming down on some blitzes. I don't expect him to take the starting job yet at safety, but there's no reason why you can't put him into some packages and have him close down.

Yeah a Thursday game seems like one he should skip and let others play

If if if we can get by Thursday's game with a win we have a huge advantage in the mini-bye this early. It's an advantage either way but more so with a win.

Best solution to the problem is either Terry tate office linebacker or Bobby Boucher

I think we'll find out what the solution is toMORROW.

OK. Well, after a night of restless sleep (not because of the game, I always struggle to sleep on Sunday) and time for reflection, here's where I am at after watching one of the most depressing wins in a long time.

1. Well, it was a win. Belichick had 5 months to get ready to stop our offense, and we frankly stopped ourselves. The Pats D is legit, and I'll be interested to see them in week 2 against Tua and that Dolphins attack.

2. I wanted to murder Brian Johnson after the game, but it seems to be equal parts Johnson going way too conservative in Q2 and Hurts really not seeing the field well once we went back to passing. Johnson seemed to go super conservative at 16-0 with the rain, but it killed all our offensive flow. Then, when we tried to ramp it back up after the Pats closed to 2 points, we were completely out of sync.

3. Yeah -- Jalen was bad yesterday. Didn't see the field, bailed out of the pocket too early, wasn't driving his throws. I did like him getting down and avoiding taking hits...right up until the fumble. Guys are going to study this tape and try and keep throwing this at him -- he needs to be better and more decisive. That looked like 2021 Hurts.

4. Justin Evans, meet the bench. Bench, meet Justin Evans. Guy definitely was at fault on the TD given up by Bradberry, and seemed to be out of position all game. How could Sydney be worse? Or even Edmunds. Blankenship played well (that TD on him was a perfect pass), but Evans is brutal.

5. I just don't understand why we weren't more aggressive in coverage and up tight. The line was getting pressure and the ball was out fast. But Desai seemed to channel his inner Gannon and play soft.

Yet, I'm encouraged. Why?

1. That's a game we lose in past years

2. I'm thinking/hoping that was knocking off rust. Other teams like the Bengals and Seahawks looked much worse.

3. Jalen Carter is a MONSTER, and Jordan Davis seems to have vastly improved

I think/hope we will improve during this beginning part of the schedule against weaker competition. Johnson, Desai and Hurts need to find their sea legs.

Regarding "That's a game we lose in past years", the Detroit, Indy, and Houston games from last year are consistent with that argument.

Can't hit him if he's handing the ball off to someone getting 5-6 yards a pop 🙂

Can hit him if you are near the mesh point and 'didn't read' that he handed the ball off.  Not a big hit, but in his grill... getting banged around.  It adds up.

Yeah -- it's been encouraging that this team under Nick finds ways to win these types of games.

Anytime a Qb is exposed and you can get a free shot at them without being called for a penalty a DCs/players will do so.

Exactly.

That rarely happens. He gets hit when he runs for the most part.

This felt a LOT like the Colts game last year. After that game, we woke up and smashed people until Hurts got injured. Hopefully this was another wakeup call.

I expect more mistakes and such for at least the next 2 games. Especially on defense.

Putting the ball in one of your best players hands doesn't seem like a bad idea. His mistake was not getting down before the defense tried to smash him.

Yes...removing the positional designation hides the fact that you are counting on your $250M QB to run out the clock by being a power back.

Put the ball in your best player's hands.  Good move.

Ask your QB to take excessive punishment that should be taken by a player who is far less pivotal to the success of the team across the season, especially in the post-season.   Bad move.

The context of who is doing it, and what you are asking them to do matters.

The punishment was self inflicted. He didn't slide. He'll learn from it

Felt more like the bears game besides the defensive stand at the end tbh. Where eagles got out to a 17-6 lead. Then a 25-13 lead but couldn’t just slam the door shut against the bears. And the bears scored quickly to make it 25-20 and eventually the eagles prevailed

The script was written already last year. Close win on the road to start followed by an absolute destruction of Kirk Cousins at home in primetime. So it is written, so it shall be.

The punishment was coach-inflicted.  They shouldn't put him in that position.   They should learn from it.   They should have learned from the Chicago game last year... but it seems they haven't.  (Caveat... in the playoffs, all bets are off, because those are all 'must-win' situations.  Week 1 game against a non-conference opponent... have some sense, especially on first down.)

And Hurts got hurt :(

Hurts was doing a good job of sliding down all game save that play. He had a brain fart.

We are clearly divided along philosophical differences.

I too want Hurts to avoid these shots but if a guy who was a pocket passer hung in there in a key moment and took a big shot people would be praising his toughness.  There's definitely a double standard.

Yeah.  If you could take that idea, and put it together with the idea of Hurts running to kill the clock at the end of the game, we might actually align our stances.

Good point. Like the former great Nick Foles. Stood back there like a statue, took it like a champ (pause), and is now no longer in the league. But he was a tough sum bish

Glad I had Goedert and Drake London on my fantasy team yesterday.

The idea is for Hurts to get down and protect himself... slide my man slide.
