EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season thru Week 9 - NO POLITICS

Eagles have given up 771 yards passing the last 2 games, yet the defense somehow saves the day.

Side note. PE.com just became much more useless. You can no longer access any game stats or gamebook unless you have NFL+. They used to have a game menu with a whole selection of things about the game. The only thing you can access now from that menu is the roster. For the fans!

There is alot of miscommunication in the secondary/linebackers.  Seems like they are always throwing their hands in the air before the snap like they don't know their assignments.  Hopefully a week off and some more continuity will help them solve those issues.

We have to give Dak credit in extending plays.  It is hard enough for our secondary to cover guys but when Bradberry has to chase around a Wr for 10 seconds that is tough duty.

Desai has to start giving the secondary some help and rush more than 4 especially if they aren't getting home.  You can't sit back there and let the offense play pitch and catch.

Maybe... but remember, this is the same Dallas team that dropped a game to the Cardinals.   THE CARDINALS.

THE CARDINALS.

The whole NFL is up, down, left, right, and sideways.

I think the Eagles are the best team in the NFL right now.  Yet I freely admit that I see the Eagles as a decisively inferior team compared to 2022 and I'd be PUNTING on our 8-1 record and SB chances if the NFL still had any of its traditional powerhouse teams.  Our 8-1 record reeks of unsustainable Vikings style toss up wins.

And with all of that said, I still think the Eagles are the best team in the NFL.  That's just the current competitive landscape.

Within that landscape, I actually think the Cowboys are right there close to the top.  They pushed the best team in the NFL to the brink, they got humiliated by a 49ers team that can't buy a win right now, and they lost to the Cardinals.

While I do think the secondary will be the death of this season, style points are completely out the window now.  Any week with a positive result is great.

That's likely a league mandate.

This blog is waaaay too down right now.

We just beat a very, very good Dallas team. Dallas was a top 10 team in DVOA, and was the healthiest they have been all season (100% of their offense, missing 2 players on defense). We were banged up and had to fight out way to victory.

We're one of the few teams with a clear path to the Super Bowl (Elite offense + HFA). That's still on the table. And if you haven't noticed, there is no team that is clearly better than us other than maybe Baltimore.

Frankly two best teams in the afc might be bengals and Baltimore. If burrow is healthy i see them right there. Bengals nearly beat the ravens with burrow not healthy. Really that titans and browns games where burrow was hurt feels like a mirage of what they are now. That ravens vs. bengals Sunday nighter in two weeks should be entertaining. Then followed up by eagles vs. KC on mnf. Could be the best snf and mnf combo this year

I get these games aren’t supposed to be easy, but we’ve been saying "clean it up” for the past two months. At some point, it’s just their identity. And they come up with new, insane, maddening ways to try to give games away. The fumble Steen recovered and giving up 75 yards in 15 seconds being two of them. It’s good they’re winning these games, but it’s just unnecessary drama.

It’s not as much a complaint or being down on the team as much as just expressing an annoyance.

Exactly. It doesn’t have to be "easy.” We just have to stop playing situationally stupid football.

That's actually where most of their success came.

Yea, seeing as it's NFL+ but still, it's the ONE thing I went to PE.com for during the season.

Once we are through KC, Buffalo, and another Dakastrophe, the pass defense legitimately might be ranked 32 of 32 in a lot of key stats.

One of them was at the 1 foot line and they created the necessary space.  The last drive was 2 obligatory runs followed by a really stupid call for a deep throw.

The offense was getting the job done all game and that late 4th lack of productivity was somewhat situationally dictated.

Even when Hurts said "how about that defense?!" it had a bit of an **I'm the leader of this team and I want to try to pick up a unit that none of us have any confidence in** kind of vibe.

That’s not true.  Defense played a lot better than most here are giving them credit for.  Hurts is banged up and without question, the mvp of this team but he knows he had multiple opportunities to put the game away at the end - that’s why he was giving kudos to the defense.

Even the botched handoff should have been a pass at the end.  A 1st down there ends the game.  Period.   Worse case scenario they punt and Dallas has the ball with 50 seconds left and 1 timeout vs 0 timeouts.   At that point, you need to take a shot at the 1st down to end the game.  60% - 70% chance you complete a pass and end the game there with a 7 yard pass.  Game over - none of the nonsense at the end of the game happens.

I thought before the year the bengals were the best team in the afc. Burrow’s injury really skewed what they are. When he’s healthy he’s a top 5 Qb and when he plays like this he is top 3. Going into Sf and smacking the niners tells you just how good that team can be.

It's the continuation of the self inflicted damage and play calling that more resembles how I play madden. The coaching staff doesn't seem too worried about it, and I don't think much is going to change. So far they have been able to overcome it, minus the jets, but is it going to be enough in the playoffs?

Dak played a great game on a hostile field today

They need to stop putting the game in the defense’s hands to end games. So yes, that is on the offense to get one first down. But it’s on them because of how poor the defense is situationally at the end of games. Most teams can trust their defense not to get in field goal range with 30 seconds left or not give up a 90 yard TD with a minute to go. This defense doesn’t have that. They lost that benefit of the doubt in the Washington games and today. They completely melted down today and almost had an unprecedented performance at the end.

what I didn’t like about that third down and eight handoff to swift, I would’ve called a play action boot. And I would’ve used AJ Brown on that side and hope that he was open on that route out and throw it to him. but if he wasn’t open on that rollout, I just have hurts  scramble and try to get as many yards as he can and get down because you still have the clock running so dallas has to call and burn it’s last timeout. but it gives you two potential options. 1. AJ Brown who is a great wide receiver and likely creates separation 2. Jalen hurts running on a bootleg play action that you might have him with a wide-open field in front of him if Dallas bites on swift running the ball

I don't bet, but if I did, I'd take the Chiefs over the field for the AFC SB representative at even odds.  (Insert joke about how it's a good thing that I don't bet).  I'd just be surprised if it's anyone else.

The Bengals and even the Bills and Ravens are theoretically capable of beating the Chiefs...but it would take their absolute best game and likely overcoming a ton of pro-KC calls.

8-1...and if we go 5-3 the rest of the way (very doable: 2-3 in our hard games, 3-0 in our easy games), we're 13-4. That's likely good enough for HFA even if we lose to SF straight up (as SF has 3 losses already). We would need 2 losses from Detroit, but that's the Lions.

Our path to the NFCE is also obvious. Beat the Giants twice and Dallas can't win the tie-breaker against us. We will likely have a better conference record than them as they already 3-0, and have 2 AFC games left. So they would have to be a game better.

We're in really good shape.

Yep - Something along those lines would have been perfect
