There was a very noticeable dropoff in pass coverage when CGJ went out last year both times so seeing them struggle with the carousel (and overall less talent) in the backfield isn't very surprising.

It's kind of a tale of two defenses. Last year we had really bad run defense, especially with JD's injury before we signed both the FAs. It was easy to run on us. Now this year teams can barely run on us so teams go passing heavy and we don't really have the ability to dissuade them. The middle of the field is open all day.

Maybe we'll get some continuity after the Bye with Byard learning the defense and Roby returning. If they're struggling this much afterwards I'll be very concerned.

Yeah I really hated to see CJGJ go, I know he rubbed fans the wrong way but he was a damn good safety that we should've tried harder to retain.

With our win against Dallas we dropped from 9th to 10th in total DVOA. Miami and Cleveland being ahead of us shows the limits of the stat. They've beaten the hell out of some bad teams (Arizona with Tune, Giants without any OL)

Lol. Sorry, JR. I will keep complaining about how **** our LBs are in coverage. Cunningham has no business being out there on clear passing downs.

Yeah, LBs in general suck in coverage, but they don’t have to be this bad either.

Yep, trying to say our LBs are just as bad as any other teams when it comes to pass defense is one of the lazier arguments I've seen in a long time. Anyone who takes the time to watch these plays (and knows what they're looking at) will come away saying what me and you are both saying here. We can and need to do better there.

I feel a lot better having Cunningham and Morrow on the field knowing they are shutting down the run game, while leaving something to be desired against the pass.

In pass coverage, what little Dean can make up for in instincts and maybe being a bit faster, Cunningham can make up in length.

Too many times we have had an LB who was supposed to be solid in coverage, but was still too short and TEs can make catches over them.

Its just a really tough thing to get a great coverage LB because that guy has to somehow be tall, AND fast, AND quick. You usually cant get that combination. So instead of man coverage, you have to prioritize a LB who can get deep in drops while in zone and take away passing lanes. And hopefully have a little length to help. Theyre not gonna be man coverage guys.

Kyzir white was great in zone coverage. And had some speed to where he could almost do both although, he was also short.  But he made life harder on QBs and occasionally even made plays on the ball. Dean isnt close to doing that stuff for us.

Yes.  In watching the AZ games, it seems like White had picked up his game from last year and became more of a playmaker.  Maybe it is that he has another year in Gannons system and becoming more comfortable.  I didn't mind losing Edwards but White would sure be nice to have on our roster right now.

No way in hell Howie will do it, but either one of those Clemson LBers would look good at the end of round 1.

White even did well here. I think he made more plays in the first half of the season than in the second half, but was still steady even if not out there being a play maker.

I thought theyd keep one of Edwards or White, and my preference was White because he was going to be cheaper, and had the more relevant current day NFL skillset (coverage ability).

Oh well.

I'd much rather spend a first round pick on a CB if there's a good one there.

I think Hurts' injury has been a blessing in disguise. He's playing much better as a QB since he's had to rely on his arm more. Also, I hate to see him taking hits out of the pocket.

It seems to me that Hurts is being smarter about not taking a big hit this year than he has been in the past. Yeah, he has a bum knee but he can at least play well.

Nothing at all lazy about that argument. Put the LBs around the league in this scheme and they'd suffer the same fate. Placing the coverage blame in the wrong place. CBs and Safeties are getting destroyed. The targets and success rates show it.

Preaching to the choir a bit, I'm not crazy about the scheme either, as I've mentioned, but the LB play is still really bad in coverage.

That’s awesome.

I get that we're all rightfully annoyed by the poor LB play, but we should still be prioritizing OL in the draft. It's more than likely Kelce's last year and we don't have OT3 on the roster.

@e-a-g-l-e-s eagles!

I've got a Mitchell & Ness (the OG, not new M&N) Randall Cunningham jersey that's never been worn. This is the jersey with the actual thick screen printed numbers, not the new ones they are making. Any idea what the value would be or what to ask for it? Every jersey on Ebay is the newer M&N version. I'd think this being a true to era authentic should be worth more than the newer ones.

The LB complaints are over blown. Problem has clearly been at CB especially slot and Safety. Lack of consistency back there is not helping. Are the LBs great at covering speedy WRs and RBs no not a chance. TEs... depends on the match up but likely a no as well.

Think of all those times that the runner’s knee is down but he falls forward into an area of a TD or first down. Or is Simms proposing this only for pass catches?  Simms is borderline stupid.  Failed in the NFL and fails as an analyst.

The chain reaction/butterfly effect that re-signing would have set off would have been interesting. Both Slay and Bradberry probably wouldn’t be here. They probably take a corner like Gonzalez instead of Carter in the first round. Probably come back and take Porter Jr later as well.

I would agree.  LBs aren't going to hang with pass catching TE's for long.  Our pass defense woes fall on the DBs, IMO.

If we had a viable secondary, I don't think anyone would be talking about the shortcomings of these LBs.  Or the shortcomings of the pass rush.  Or the shortcomings of overanalyzing a handful of stalled offensive drives in an otherwise dominant offensive performance.  Or any shortcomings.

I think the secondary is that bad and the rest of the team is that good.  If they were remotely close to being able to do even a sub-par but viable job, things would be better.  It's a handicap that leaves every single deviation from perfection from the rest of the team as a risk to lose a game.  Fortunately, the rest of the team is pretty close to perfect.

Both Simms and Florio haven proven themselves to be morons so many times over and yet fans still think their opinions are worthy of consideration. I don't get it.

I’d say nakobe Dean being mediocre would be generous. I think he’s been below average

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about Dean and his injury. He hurt some foot, not even sure if it's the same one or not, slammed his helmet on the way to the locker room and was almost immediately ruled out. Sounds like he's set to miss more time but I haven't heard a single update on him.

I used to somewhat like Florio way, way, way back when PFT started before the Twitter boom for football news and rumors. I guess he carried some of that reputation with some while pissing most of it away in the meantime. Simms is just your typical shock jock with a platform.
