The following is going to trigger the sometimes condescending knowledge base of the blog with some "it’s not that simple, doesn’t work that way, you don’t understand” responses.  And perhaps I’m pushing too hard in the other direction to prove a point, but it still is worth saying:

The media, the fans, perhaps even the coaches are over-mystifying the slot cb position.  People are making it sound like the most difficult and critical position on defense.  Are there nuances that make it different from outside cb?  Of course.  BUT…there is also a reason that the third best cb traditionally mans the slot.  There are rocked up safeties who play up at the LOS who function in this role at times.  If a cb is "long legged and struggles with quickness,” then that’s going to be a problem outside too.  Our secondary has not fallen into the abyss simply due to the inevitable annual injury to Maddox, who wasn’t exactly a total stud in the first place.  The depth at the cb position is a collection of udfas who are not prepared to play nfl football.  And the starting safeties / outside cbs leave a lot to be desired.  It’s a global DB talent/quality problem…not the lack of someone who "fits” in the slot.

Yeah... If you have throw out conventional wisdom to even begin building your foundation, its very weak. I dont know why you imply that we should pretend these guys should be able to play in the slot effectively.

The problem isnt really just simply that we lost Maddox, its that we had no backup to him. We tried to sign one, and he got injured almost as quickly as Aaron Rodgers. The depth at CB is all outside CBs or safeties who are more the SS type.

I think whats really interesting is how the eagles had an annoying propensity to stock up on shorter slot type CBs, who always sucked. Suddenly we find ourselves down our nickel guy and somehow all we have is lanky outside guys. I suppose its because they have playing a ton of lottery tickets on finding the next outside CB before they had to really invest in the position- hoping one or 2 of these guys work out. And I dont mind that at all. But they shoulda had, and kept at least one nickel guy. Although, I think Roby will be just fine for us once he is back on the field next week.

howie can't make every fans trade happen. takes 2 parties to make it happen and if he feels the trade is to lopsided the trigger doesn't get pulled.

True, but we are a Super Bowl contender with long term guys set to leave or retire. Not saying the window will slam shut but this is "the year". You have to sacrifice sometimes, we have plenty of picks, I feel as though there had to be someone willing to dance. Howie is notorious for overvaluing his picks/players. Our needs were very blatantly clear & obvious. I just thought for as smart as Howie is, he could've gotten something done...

Besides Mailata, has a player ever been drafted into the NFL without ever playing a snap of American football at any level?

Not counting kickers and punters?

I don’t think so. There was a guy drafted by the Cardinals who never played college football but he did play semi-pro. Eric something. Really good player, IIRC.

I could post something but of course it would be condescending so I won’t.

Oubre only has a fractured rib. I wonder why they said he would miss significant time last night.

If there is someone, sure. But I meant an actual draft pick was used on them, not UDFA guys.

Jim Hines?

Renaldo Nehemiah - not sure if he was drafted.

Eric Swann, he had nice career - I remember him (looks like he played HS ball, like Antonio Gates and Ray Seals).

Jax/SF and DET/LAC are the only games this weekend that are both watchable and important to us.

Tyree Jackson has been elevated from the practice squad by the Giants.

Commentary blaming the Niners defense rather than Purdy lol. Can't put any blame on him for some reason. They lost two games giving up 19 and 22 points.

Burrow putting up 31 points doesn't make a defense dysfunctional. It was only 17-10 going into the 4th quarter. The offense didn't show up.

49ers made that look easy. Hopefully the Jags will tighten up on defense.

Eric Swann was a heck of a player for the Cardinals during their NFCE days.

Aiyuk shoved that dB in the back to force separation.  Should have been a penalty

Brock Purdy, Shanahan automaton to gunslinger…

It’s pretty clear the NFL pushes announcers to talk up QBs because they are starving for just average QB play.

Refs on the 49ers side today

Swann was a big recruit to North Carolina State. I forget why he washed out there. Maybe academics. He ended up going the semi-pro route and then got drafted. He even played in an all star game prior to the draft. So he definitely had football experience.

Yes, but he did in fact play American football in Germany. Not the same as Mailata, who never put on pads or a helmet.

We all know he's going to get it but does he deserve it?

TuaTagovailoa was practically having seizures on the field last year and is on pace for 4,900 yards and 36 TD's while having the Dolphins on top of the AFCE.

Breece Hall is on pace for nearly 1,100 yards and 5 TD after missing last year with a torn ACL.

TJ Watt had a torn pec and beat up knee missing almost half the season and is on pace for 20 sacks, 4 FF and 2 INT.

Deshaun Watson is single handedly making the Russel Wilson trade look like good value.

He technically died on the field and played in a game less than a year later. It doesn’t get more comeback than that.

Nah that still counts.
