Exactly. The old man got hurt and everyone is in an uproar. Nobody else got hurt except for the old man.

What’s wrong with liking Jay Leno? He was better than any of the crap that’s out there nowadays.

Not liking Leno is a reportable offense

I think it's a figure of speech about not just surrendering leadership but surrendering leadership to people meant to be controlled.  It's at the very least an antiquated view of best business practices. It's not as if players are not interested in the success of the NFL and teams.

It's not about control over a group of people.  That's the racist spin put on it.  It's about the qualification, or lack thereof, of those trying to make decisions.

The asylum is meant to be run by the people with the training to do so.  The doctors,  clinical staff, and administrators.

The patients are not oppressed. They are just not qualified to run things.

These injuries happen... on grass, on turf, they just do.  Now, the Tom Waddle injury... that's outside the bounds of normal.  The Vet was a destroyer of careers.

I think he was going to say Backdraft, but then realized that backpedal is a different word entirely.

Wonder if Howie has interest at OT depth if he's medically cleared

You're referring to patients, the expression is referring to inmates. Inmates can't just walk free whenever they would like to. The entire point is that they have no control despite wanting it.

The Bengals OL is so bad.  It's concerning even they gave up on him unless there's more to the story.

He's only 9 months removed from a torn ACL and MCL. He's probably not healthy.

Edit: PCL also.

I don't think its an "NFL" thing.  I think it is a team by team, venue by venue thing.  I suppose the NFL could mandate grass, but in domes that won't work.  And we saw how good the turf was for the Super Bowl being grown outside then rolled inside.

Not true. In legacy domes, maybe, but modern domes have grass and simply store the field outdoors or underneath the stadium under grow lights when it’s not in use.

Like I said... we saw that with the Super Bowl.   It's not a perfect solution.

The debate about the meaning of a very old idiom is the very definition of what the blog is.   Kudos everyone.

The problem in the Super Bowl was over watering the field and not allowing it to dry out. Here is the "sod father” who oversaw the ground’s maintenance. The NFL disregarded his advice to let the field dry out and instead rolled it into the stadium on Wednesday with a tarp over it, which held all the moisture in.

That has nothing to do with the system to actually put grass in domes.

Eh players have been railing against turf for awhile now and there is at least some data (not sure how strong it is tbh) that it can increase certain types of injuries. This isn't a new gripe, it's just bubbling to the surface cause of  Rodgers' injury

The fact that they can put a field that bad out there for the biggest game of the year means there clearly was something wrong with the system.  The system failed... miserably.

Leno was a very good stand-up comic.  I think most folks need to realize The Tonight Show was an NBC corporate entity, and execs likely dictated a lot of the show's format -- especially post-Carson.  Carson wanted Letterman to succeed him as host, but Dave wasn't the right type of comic to just walk on and inherit Carson's audience, which was likely an older demographic than he appealed to.

I never watched a lot of late night talk shows because I always seemed to have jobs starting at 6:00am or so.  I was asleep by 10:30pm.  When I did get the chance I watched both Leno and Letterman and appreciated both for what they offered.  Conan O'Brien is funny in a more intellectual way, and he reminds me quite a bit of one of my older brothers so I had an affinity for his humor.

The guy I never saw the appeal of was Dick Cavett.  A lot of people loved his show as an alternative to the Tonight Show, but his constant stammering and stumbling over words (and general awkwardness) drove me crazy.  Waiting for him to finish a question was irritating.

If the NFL continues to go with throwback uniforms and moves to more natural grass fields, I'll be very happy. So many of the artificial surfaces look so shiny on TV

Since we're talking about the field, how much longer is the NFL going to remind everyone that "It takes all of us" or "End Racism"? It's been 4 years and I've heard more racist allegations about actual members of the NFL than any of us fans out there. Maybe they should look in the mirror?

I think the perfect example of the idiom is what you currently have with the NBA. It's turned into a player-centric league where you have situations like what is going on with Harden right now, Durant wanting to get traded every six months, Kyrie Irving going off the grid, or Simmons before holding a team hostage. And where you have guys sitting out half the regular season games for load-management that has led to a deteriorating product. Adam Silver gets walked on by the players, while his predecessor in Stern wouldn't put up with it. I'm all for players having more of a say, but the NBA has gone overboard with it.

So contrary to the NFL's new Ad Campaign...apparently you can make this stuff up 🤔
