Nah.  Griffey was better, because defense counts as part of the equation.  Griffey was a better defensive player than Bonds, and its not even close.

I do love the 'WAR' statistic.  What a meaningless arbitrary number that is tossed around like it has meaning.

How can I say that a 10 time Gold Glove winner is head and shoulders above an 8 time Gold Glove winner defensively?  Simple... Griffey earned his Gold Gloves in CF, where teams have ALWAYS placed their best defensive outfielder.   Meanwhile, Barry won his Gold Gloves primarily playing LF... you know, the position you put a player in when they have too valuable a bat to leave on the bench, but really isn't good enough defensively to play elsewhere.  LF is where you hide players.  Now, Barry was a very good defensive LF.  But, he wasn't even the best defensive OF on his team in Pittsburgh, that was Andy Van Slyke, which is why Bonds played LF, while Van Slyke played CF.  And when the time came to move Bonilla to the outfield... they moved Bonilla to RF (where you typically put your second best OF), and they left Bonds in LF.  (the same position manned by the likes of Greg Luzinski, Manny Ramerez, Pat Burrell, Rhys Hoskins and even today... Kyle Schwarber.   Granted, Bonds played it much much better than they did... but if he were really a great defensive OF... he'd have been in CF or at least RF.)

And then, Bonds (and many others) ruined baseball for nearly a decade.

What is the ratio in offense vs defense value? Barry was statistically the better hitter, but Griffey is better because he was the better outfielder? As for offensive stats, that also wasn’t particularly close (even before the steroids)

Would you say Bryce Harper’s contract would have been better served to a superior outfielder who couldn’t hit like Harper? Of course not, because plate production has a significantly bigger impact on a baseball game than defensive differences between a GG CF and a GG LF

Griffey is better because when Barry decided to take the easy road, he chose to stay away from it.  Barry didn't need it.  But, he chose to do it anyway.

Your summation is that Griffey is better because you like him better. Bonds is one of the worst things to ever happen to baseball, but in an objective comparison he was still the best player from 1990-2000

Bonds and McGuire made baseball exciting and has only gone downhill since then

Nah.  Nothing exciting about cheating to me.  Quite the opposite.  And the obsession with home runs, launch angle and home run vs. strikeout constantly makes the game less interesting.   Gone are the days of the stolen base, the hit and run, the run and hit, the suicide squeeze, safety squeeze... And now with the universal DH, the decisions are much more vanilla.  No more double switch, no more debate about leaving the pitcher in to hit because he's dealing, or to take him out because you have a rally going.  The chess of the game has become basically checkers.

Bit naive but cheating is happening in every sport right now

And he chose to ruin all of that.  So, one played the game with integrity, and the other one played the game with a syringe.  One upheld the history of the game.  The other bludgeoned it to death.   Bonds might have been the closest thing to Willie Mays since Willie Mays (except for the CF vs. LF thing)... and he chose to spit on the game.  So yeah, Griffey was better for the game, and therefore the better player.   And a better fielder, and he got to 600+ HRs without juicing, while facing pitchers who were juicing.

And the cheating should be called out and stopped.  Not swept under the rug.  Shrugging at it and accepting it won't make it go away.

There are levels to it though, gamesmanship like George Brett pine tar or Jawan Taylor a foot off the LoS isn’t close to a player breaking alltime records with steroids or the Houston Astros tainting an entire year of baseball.

I bet more than half of NFL players over 30 are on TRT and HGH not to mention peptides.

Bama maybe.500 this year

Does that make it ok?

Everyone knows me as a tough, tough guy. And I've never been afraid of anything. Not any human, not anything. Then I woke up in the hospital last March and they told me, "You have cancer." Cancer. I couldn't understand it. All I knew was that I was just so weak. I went through all those wars on the football field. I was so muscular. I was a giant. Now I'm sick. And I'm scared.

It wasn't worth it.

If you don't think some of your favorite athletes on the Eagles aren't skirting the laws so they can make it thru a season then not sure what to tell you.

I could care less what someone puts in their body, risks are known and easily searched on the internet.

Dude sounds like an abuser to me and no different with other vices people have

And if I found out, I'd lose respect for them.   You don't care (though you say "I couldn't care less"... it is more accurate to your actual meaning).  I do care.  So, I suppose we can leave it there.

Milton has come a long way , he actually looks like a QB

Yeah, I would bet that the majority of professional athletes are using PEDs.

There’s just too much money to be made and they are too easily accessible.

welp

I’ve heard tales of a time when we were in this discussion of ineptitude. Thank you Jeffrey Lurie

I could care less, they are making millions to play a game. They are incentivized to be on anything they can do play the game longer.

Not your body, not your decision.

Nope.  And I'm not stopping them, am I?
