I drove west to east through Wyoming once while it was blowing snow across the highway with black ice underneath. I really did not want to be there.

I avoid the Colorado - Wyoming route since then and go through NM, Cortez, Utah now. (to and from Texas)

Yeah, that's not a great place to be in the snow, and I can't blame you. I had no clue what the fence things were along the road the first time I saw them.

We drove through a couple years ago, huge ice storm black ice, there were upside down cars on the side of the road, jack knifed semis, almost zero visibility, I was white knuckling the whole drive was scared to stop and pullover be ayse I thought if I did my wife and kids would die in the frozen wasteland so we took out chances in the road, the drive usually takes us about 13 hours from Wichita to SLC it took us about 26 hours that time

Scariest drive of my life, I hate that road, at that time it was sadly the safest of the routes as the others were snowed in

Since then we never go back home in the winter months only in summer and spring.

Same here. That drive was awful. Less Armageddon to the sides of the road for me but still terrifying.

I always go back in December for the holidays but its a long drive to Cortez or so through the night so I can do the Monticello - Spanish Fork section in the daytime.

I plan the trip around the weather forecast as well.

Arkansas River clay in Wichita.  Need to get away from that to get the soil I speak of.

If you head down towards Independence and Coffeyville, Elk City can be on the way.  Coffeyville is famous for the Dalton gang raid where they tried to rob two banks and the gunfight that followed.  Straight south of there headed towards Tulsa is Bartlesville, OK, original home of Phillips 66.   Second to last time I was in Wichita, I took 400 east.  My next trip, probably next month, I plan to take the Elk City route down to Tulsa via Coffeyville and Bartlesville on the way to my father in law’s in Texas.  Weather willing.

My grandpa, my mom's dad is from coffeyville, funny story.

So we were looking up family history about my family in coffeyville and we came across an old newspaper clipping that talked about a man that was wanted for robbery in coffeyville where my grandpa lives as a kid, turns out the name was the sane name as my great grandpa who around the same time  had packed his family up and moved to Utah, i mentioned to my mom that it sounds like her grandpa who was  long gone by this point was the man wanted  in coffeyville for robbery, he robbed a grocery store, my mom said no way must have been a different man of the same name in the same area at the same time😄

She's still in denial lol.

I had the same DANGER reaction to those fences when I first saw them.

I had the same reaction to this in Houston.

None of those things are decorative.

Because that awful freeway is the fastest way to get from Wichita to SLC when taking 3 kids to visit their grandparents.

I've actually told my wife I'd rather drive an extra hour + through I think it's Nebraska/Colorado just to avoid Wyoming all together

Now there are some beautiful spots in Wyoming like the mentioned above, but that's  like saying a huge turd is beautiful because it has a flake of gold in it.

Vast majority of Wyoming is as said a barren wasteland and to get to that flake of gold you're gonna have to drive through a lot of poop.

I understand but as they age, try 50 to Grand Junction (after CO DOT stops working on the road.  Awesome drive.  Dodge City along the way.  They might get a kick out of the "museum” there.  Or get off 70 and drive 40 (you might even take a side route through Rocky Mountain National Park but that would add a day and you need reservations.  The Dinosaur National Monument visitor center in UT is awesome.

Monticello is fun because it sounds like an exotic destination if you don't know, then you drive through and it's like a stop light and a jack in the box next to the Mormon temple.😄

It's amazing how you have Estes Park/Grand Lake/Rocky Mt. Park and then Yellowstone and the Tetons and Moab/Arches/Canyonlands with that empty stretch of hell in the middle.

If you are north there are things to see. If you are driving through WY on 80 you don't even want to be on the highway let alone getting off. The point is that stretch of road is a freaking wasteland as you are rolling through it. It's boring driving through Nebraska, and it feels like it will never end, but I'd still take that.

I have driven or ridden all over WY.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Interstates are great for speed but we miss a lot of the country if we stick to them.

Agree, not the route in the winter.

This is a game we could use Quez to take some deep shots. The Bucs are one of the rare teams that you don't want to get them in base.

There is also Cuba, NM. Not one beach but they do have some sand.

My favorite attractions along the route are called Love's.

Clean bathrooms, side lots to catch a few hours of rest, pebble ice, and dog parks.

My kids actually travel really well it's just that stretch of road I 80 in Wyoming is just awful.

The drive through NM / Utah has some incredible scenery. Its also nice because its just there without going off your route.

We've done things like 4 corners but how many times do you need to stand in 4 states at once?

Yup loves has it all.

Personally I'm partial to Beaver Utah.

The beaver gas station one of two at the stop has lots of trinkets from hats, t shirts  mugs etc... that say I ♥️ Beaver.😁

We have Buc-ee's  (pronounced Bucky's) in Texas which are great but Love(s) is everywhere.

Recognize the intersection.  But that’s why they built the Addicks and Barker dams out west for Brays and Buffalo Bayous because the whole town used to flood.  BTW, I have driven the entire length of US 59.  Not all at one time but over the years.

Lol yeah.

So I did 4 corners when I was just a kid around 12 years old, then I find out the marker was geographically wrong and they had to change it, so technically I have never been in 4 states at once☹️

But yeah parts of NM are beautiful, much rather drive through NM than the  wasteland that is Wyoming.

Old Fall River Road is worth the time if your car will make it

Seems like a real dog fight between Swift and Gainwell to get to handling Jalens balls

I like the dispensaries in Cortez but not for you.

Yeah I stopped at Bucees last year when we drove to Texas, I had no idea it was a big deal until I saw all the people wearing hats and t shirts 🤷‍♂️

You must love Bucee’s in Texas.  Wife is a huge fan of Love’s and Bucee’s restrooms.

Im not your traditional Mormon, i too like dispensaries...

Im really tired of KS not legalizing weed in any form, bunch of idiots , even SLC of all places has legalized it medicinally.🤬
