The Eagles have faced Sam Howell, Baker Mayfield, Kirk Cousins, and Mac Jones.  Through 4 games, their pass defense:

QB rating against: 99.5 (26th)

Passing yards per game: 260.8 (27th)

Passing TDs: 9 (30th)

This is against the aforementioned QBs, in more than one bad weather game, and with an elite DL to lean on generating several short drops/quick releases.

This is on the short list for worst secondary in the entire NFL.

To be fair while I agree our secondary is ugly, Cousins has torched every team he's faced until Carolina on Sunday for 300 plus, guy was setting records for most yards in defeat and we held Mayfield to his lowest yardage of the season so far, even a bum throwing to guys like Godwin and Evans is going to get yards.

That said it's clear we can't go the rest of the season with Bradberry playing slot and a camp body outside, they need to bring in some of the veteran corners that are available to see if there's anyone we can work with, Logan Ryan or Bryce Callahan have to be better than this.

Toast, not that you are saying Jobe is the weak link.

I re-watched the game because I thought Jobe played a good game but some talk on here that he didn't.  I don't see the poor play by Jobe.  I think he played well.  The Dotson TD was a good play and a nice catch.  Little push off on Dotson and a perfectly clean pocket for Howell.  WA leading WR with 86 yards, couple others with 51.  This idea that WR were running up and down the field making plays on Jobe just isn't accurate.

What is accurate is Edmunds is consistently late arriving on help.  His instincts and angles are bad.  Jobe is #28 and Edmunds is #26.  I do wonder if sometimes Jobe is getting blamed when Edmunds is the late arrival.  Evans has played better than Edmunds albeit not by much.  The deep drop really doesn’t help any of them.  Yesterday the lining up in zone was too deep.  Take the Jets, for example.  Their drop rarely got deeper than eight yards.

Edmunds should be cut

I understand it however the actions of what sauce did is still a penalty regardless of inconsistency from the officials in calling it. We know the officials are inconsistent with all calls. This isn’t exclusive to just PI/defensive holding. Look at offensive holding it’s the same way. It’s been a problem. We also have seen in the past 2 super bowls they are looking to make those type of call late in games. Even without the Super Bowl games, they’ve shown a tendency to want to make a call like that late in games. There is an inherent risk if you’re going to put your hands on a wide receiver over 5 yards down the field and hold him that you could be called for it the next time even if they haven’t been calling it all game. It is still technically a penalty and there’s a chance/risk you are taking the next time you do it with the officials we have. Especially late in games it been proven they’ll throw the flag

Should the official have thrown flag way sooner? Yes. But that doesn’t change the fact the contact and holding sauce did was a penalty. Should there be more consistency in the calls? Also Yes. But it’s that way nearly every week so sauce knows there is a risk and that they are looking to make that call late in games. It’s why I respect bradberry’s answer after the SB. He admitted it was a penalty and he took the risk thinking he could get away with it due to officials being inconsistent with calling it.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying.  My problem is the refs are having to much say on outcomes of games now. That's a big problem.

Covey is in the concussion protocol. I didn't even know he was injured.

He is third in the league in punt return average (min. 4).

There should be an Anti Nasty Nate award for the guy that is summarily hated during camp and then blows expectations away.

Was it noted here yesterday that both the TD to Brown and Intentional Grounding plays were audibles called at the line?

It seems the media was questioning Sirianni and Johnson for calling those plays, when it was Hurts to changed into them.

Hurts saw heavy boxes and did what he is coached to do, check to the 1v1 on the perimeter.  I'd argue that he should be coached to not do that in certain game situations.

100%.  Not all situations are the same.  Time, place, and score.

yeah but its not taunting according to the refs

We only have this weak penalty because the Mara's got their feelings hurt.  It's such a stupid penalty.

Don’t disagree but unfortunately it’s the world we live in. if I’m a player or coach, i have to be fully aware that last couple mins of games they are looking to make the call so i have to adjust. It’s unfortunate but it’s not changing anytime soon

I like to read the ExtremeSkins message board sometimes, and I particularly enjoy reading after we beat them. What I find fascinating at the moment is that their fans seem happier about yesterday’s game than our fans do. Think about that for a moment and see if you can see what’s wrong with that. I think it says a lot about us.

I have friends who last night were just beside themselves with anguish about the victory. It’s insane.

No need for anguish about the game given the ultimate outcome.   Anguish during the game is another matter.   But, the outcome of the game doesn't change the issues we saw during the game that caused that anguish.   This is a flawed team.  The record is perfect, but the team is not.   Relish the win.  On to the next game and hopefully we can see some improvements in the weaker areas, and we can see the DC start to ask the DBs to not play so deep, especially in short yardage situations.

Well, he's a little white guy who wasn't great last year. We get a pass.

Carter needs to learn how to finish, I've lost count of how many times he has destroyed his blocker only to miss out on the QB.

I also saw him end up on his knees way too much yesterday. I'm not sure if he was slipping or he comes in low and the OL was shoving him down.

Probably assumed they'd try to go for it on 4th and 1, but he shouldn't just assume that nor assume that if they did that the defense wouldn't have been able to stop it.

I think the odds of a fourth and one conversion (80% or so) were greater than the odds of an incomplete pass (maybe 50%). I think it's the right call to put them into a situation where they have to complete a six yard pass.

It didn't work out but I think the thought process was correct.

I remember an Eagles' DL coach mention several years ago that one of the hardest things for rookie DTs to learn is to stay on their feet.

whenever I hear Lis Franc I get nightmare flashbacks to Duce injuring his.

That was the first time any of us ever heard about it. It wasn't commonly known and was purported to be extremely rare. I remember Reid saying they did research and discovered it was an injury often associated with horse riding accidents, when the foot gets stuck in the stirrup and twists is some weird way. To have it happen in a football game was an oddity.

Nowadays it seems like every foot injury is a Lis Franc. Weird.

I really think CB is more of an issue than safety.  Blankenship is playing pretty well and there is at least a theoretical, optimistic chance that Sidney Brown provides relief at safety down the stretch.  We are all told that Evans can be serviceable too, although I'll believe it when I see it.

At CB, Slay is not playing good football.  Bradberry inside has turned one weakness into 2.  We can stop pretending that Jobe is any good.  Ricks/Ringo are intriguing prospects, but obviously aren't trusted and are more red shirt roster stashes than even meaningful depth at this point.

IMO, CB is the dire situation.

To frame this another way, let's say in a hypothetical scenario where for that play (2nd and 4 with 1:49 left and WAS has a TO left) that Sirianni insisted on an outside zone run to Swift. And let's say Swift bounces it wide, rounds the corner and is darting down the sidelines towards the end zone. Do you want him to try to get the TD, or slide down in bounds inside the 10 yard line? Obviously you'd want the latter, right? To me that's the best case scenario because you can actually drain the clock and send out Jake for a last second FG giving you the highest chance to win the game while mitigating risk of an interception or a defensive collapse. The only risk left with that scenario is a blocked FG (but that's still less than the risk for the alternatives of an interception or conceding a TD defensively.)

So in that vein, I absolutely prefer a run called on 2nd and 4, not just because an interception (or strip sack) is the worst case scenario, but also because stopping the clock on an incompletion is really, really bad too. I'd rather play the odds and go with the higher percentage play, at least on 2nd down. Now if we're short and it's 3rd and 2, that's likely too far for a tush push but still I'd rather see a run there for the same reasons. If we come up short and have to kick it, then so be it.

Anyways, I think we've gamed this out far enough. I didn't like the call to throw there, but I can at least somewhat see where Sirianni / Johnson were coming from given that WAS still had a TO and picking up a 1st down wasn't exactly guaranteed.

In other words... the outcome being a 'good' one doesn't change the process of the decision being incorrect.

Too many bad things could have happened and DID happen with the decision to go for the end zone there.

  • Incompletion, clock stops and Washington has a great chance of getting the ball back with extra time to tie or win the game.
  • Interception, turnover and Washington has the timeout left with plenty of time to go down and win the game.
  • Sack... pushes us out of field goal range.
  • Holding call on the offense (more likely on a pass than a run play) and the clock stops and this pushes them out of FG range.
  • Score a TD.  Washington gets the ball back, with the timeout remaining, with plenty of time to move the ball down the field to tie or win the game.

The last outcome was the one that happened, and the Washteam moved the ball down the field and tied the game.  And I still think that Rivera helped the Eagles by not going for the win there.  Not sure what he was thinking.  The Eagles' D was gassed.

Interesting. He'll pick it up. It just wasn't something I noticed his first few games.

While I agree he hasn't been superb, there have been many times he's let whomever go (intentionally) and the safety help is nowhere to be seen.

Pretty much this, imo.

Good play. I get the media department has a job. If they go for two at the end I seriously doubt the defense would have stopped them, and we are all sitting here talking about a loss. I don't think that needed to be posted with "Sunday scaries" since going for the TD almost cost them the game.

Both will play as neither team has better options. Just have to stay healthy.

Now...

Here is a list of CBs who will have contracts ending soon and who are on bad teams:

Young:
AJ Terrell (2020 #16, Falcons)
Jaylon Johnson (2020 #50, Bears)
Jeff  Okudah (2020 #3, Lions -> Falcons)
CJ Henderson (2020 #9, Jaguars -> Panthers)

Old:
Steven Nelson (Texans, UFA next year)
Shaquill Griffin (Texans, UFA next year)
Marcus Peters (Raiders, UFA next year)

Aspirational:
Patrick Surtain (2021 #9, Broncos)

The old guys have no upside, but probably represent immediate improvement/stability, and will cost next to nothing at the deadline.  I can't say I know much about the younger guys and how much they'd offer as immediate help, although it doesn't seem they'd cost much.

And Surtain...he's already in trade rumors.  He's immediate help, long term help...I'd be willing to give up quite a bit for that one.

Haven’t had a chance to watch the fourth quarter, but the Eagles called a third and 11 Gainwell draw at the Washington 16? Good thing I couldn’t watch. My remote might not have survived.
