Are we at all surprised that the Eagles finally won a game the first time they gave defensive snaps to VanSumeren while also giving Nolan Smith significant action at MLB?

RAS!!!

Surprised more people aren’t talking about how broken our pass rush is. For all the money and draft picks invested in it that was a bad performance against arguably the worst offense and offensive line in the league.

Agreed. The positives on the pass rush:

  • Cox is still playing at a high level considering his age.
  • Carter is playing well and will only get better, still some rookie issues, the rookie wall, etc.  He'll be great though.
  • BG is a part-time rotational player at the end of his career and given that, still playing well.
  • Reddick is still playing well despite not having the stat sheet, the offense has to account for him.  Teams are holding a lot as well.
  • Williams is a good backup DT to rotate in.

IMO the problems:

  • Sweat is a decent DE but they don't have a stronger DE opposite him since BG is part-time.
  • Linebackers aren't solid enough so teams focus on doubling Carter and Reddick.  There's no LB threat to go kill the QB.
  • Coaching: blitzing and scheming with the front 7, they just rely on the D line and Reddick to figure it out.
  • Davis is ok, but not playing like a top 13 pick that they traded up 2 spots for, and gave up a 4th rounder and two 5th rounders to get him.  Coming out of college he never played all downs and conditioning was a known issue.  So having a guy that can't play a high number of snaps and is a rotational piece is fine...but that's what Williams is and they got him in the 3rd round.

They need a top DE prospect to start across from Sweat and a solid all around LB top prospect or free agent.  I think those 2 things would make a big difference.

Just saw a cool stat, The Eagles are the only team this year to beat 4 Teams with 9 wins or more: (Chiefs, Cowboys, Bills and Dolphins).  They also beat Tampa and Rams who both have 8 wins and are most likely going to the Playoffs.  Just to put things in perspective of the schedule they've had this year.   The Dolphins and Bills wins are looking even better as both teams are roaring into the playoffs.

A positive take in a desert of despair.

@mattwill

While I picked an eagles loss my bonus prediction of a Hurts pick 6 came true.

You are absolutely right!  I'm fixing that now.  My bad.  Clearly an example of sexual discrimination.

The video of the locker room and Sirianni speech is pretty embarrassing. Everyone looks down and cheerleader Nick is trying to be all happy and give props.

the players just look like they’ve had enough of his BS

I would say that our defense lacks talent and that can only be disguised to a certain degree by a coordinator.

The offense has a lot of talent, but the lack of a good coordinator (or whoever is responsible for the playbook) is the main reason for their insufficiency.

Correct.   The scheme on defense can be poor in addition to the lack of talent, but it is more Joes than Os.  The offense has plenty of Jimmys, but the Xs are just elementary and poorly constructed.  If not for the Jimmys, this would be the Bears' offense.  🤮

Jalen overcame that. We had a 10 pt lead at halftime even with that play. We lost the game in the second half.

The interception at the end of the jets game when we had the lead was the single worst play of his career. He threw it right to him when a throwaway and a punt probably win the game. The boneheaded heroball play when we’re up 17-3 also doesn’t come close

Regardless, the statement was about whether the play before half yesterday was Jalen's worst play as a pro, and considered the context around the play.   What happened before or after the play is irrelevant to which single play was a worse mistake.

I believe yesterday's was a bigger blunder though, because it was purely a mental lapse.  Dropping the football like that, to me, is just weirdly flukey and a physical issue rather than mental.

I think Sweat is still a very good DE. His problem, IMO, is the coaches overused him and for whatever reason decided this is the year he's not on a pitch count. They have protected him every single year and kept him around 60% or less. This year he's above 75%. It's a hard ask to have him out there so much when he's not used to it. It's like they want to use up whatever is left in his knee.

I probably won’t be able to do it either. Just pray Minnesota beats Detroit the next week.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. Patricia can be super petty.

Petty?   That was an egregious effort mistake by him.   No excuse for him not busting it to get off the field... nor for the coaching staff not to be screaming at him to hurry up.  They saw how close the snap was and really showed no urgency themselves.  (and they still had the option to call a timeout before the snap to save the penalty, but believed he could get off the field in time.). They were all wrong.

The impact of ditching Barnett. He wasn't all that effective but Fd our rotation.

Vibes are completely off. Watch that and watch earlier this year. Something happened/is happening and it looks like the players are just done with this season.

I think he saw a tight window and thought he could get the TD.  Honestly it just wasn't a smart play, he admitted in his press conference he saw something and just reacted.   I guess the hole closed up on him fast and then he couldn't get back out of bounds. I understand his drive and will to win to get the TD there but he needed to be conscious of the clock so we could get one more shot.

What window?  There were multiple defenders all there along the sidelines to stop him... and he was at the 8 yard line, that would have been a helluva run to make that cut, and then still have enough power to run over 3 or 4 guys for 5 or 6 more yards.

He wasn't conscious of the clock on the play before when they sent a free blitzer either.  That cost us the timeout, because the easy way out of that is to throw the ball out the back of the end zone and save the timeout.  No loss of yards and no need to use the timeout.  His 'competitiveness' gets the best of him and he thinks he can make plays that he just can't.   Sometimes you just need to live and play for the next down.

Gives you an opportunity to treat them like the Eagles.

Complain about play calling, bust on Dak for his decision making, stand up and yell WTF!! on every missed tackle.

That's a nice stat... but that doesn't change the fact that they still have yet to play a full 60 minutes of smart, strong football.   Time is running out.    Maybe... just MAYBE they can find a way for a miraculous turn around in their level of play in the next couple weeks.

They weren't really using Barnett when he was here, either. He played more than 15 snaps only two times while he was here. And there's the whole Nolan Smith issue. They just refused all year to actually have a rotation.

Players sometimes make bone headed mistakes, especially rookies. But he's way too talented to be benched for it. If it's a pattern or he's got a track record, then that's a different story. How many low effort plays have we seen from AJ over the past couple seasons? Clearly you can't bench him for those, the dude is our best player on offense.

To be clear, I'm not a fan of coddling your star players, like at all, but I'm a realist, and also not interested in losing games because I was caught up in making an example of someone.

They struggled with an extremely trashy team coming of a 3 game losing streak. Of course the vibes are off lol.
