I'm old enough to remember when the blog consensus was that it was no big deal to let White and Edwards both walk because they were JAGs and would be easily replaced by Howie. Ditto for CJGJ and Epps.

I'm feeding Avonte 10 Senzu beans a day so he's back by the playoffs.

OK. Let's try a positive outlook. 1994, Eagles 40 - 49ers 8. That game was as ugly as it gets for the 49ers, much like yesterday. Maybe this was the eye opener the Eagles needed.

And that's on the damn NFL

Whoever/whatever decided to give us this schedule (whether a human or some sort of algorithm) did not do us any favors.

Shaq Leonard ain't covering CMC out of the backfield. He is not that kind of LB anymore. He will be a really good run defending LB edge to edge, maybe some in the flats coverage on passing downs, but not beyond the LOS. He just doesn't move like he used to in space. Who does after two back surgeries?

At least he would be in the damn area code based on his instincts

I brought this up last night. Linebackers and slot corner in Roby. Roby hasn’t been good besides the punch out in the KC game. So basically we have 11 defenders but morrow, Ellis and Roby have absolutely no busy playing the snaps they are. They are backups in this league and frankly Roby should likely be retired. So 8 defenders that are starting caliber or can be competent enough. Then 3 that you have to cover up for. So basically over a quarter of the defense you are trying to cover up for just poor talent and JAGs. You look at the better units in the league, they usually don’t have 3 players that have no business playing the snaps they are playing.

let me then add on to this, I went back and watch the game last night. You know the thing that pops out really noticeably about the Eagles on defense? They have no speed. They look old and slow on the back end. Particularly in the secondary where you have four of five players playing significant snaps that are all over 30. When you face a team like San Francisco, that’s going to use motion and they’re going to use their YAC yards you better a tackle well and have the speed to get there. The Eagles do not have that whatsoever. This is an old defense on the back end playing a ton of snaps besides Blankenship and brown (and yesterday Ellis).

I said this earlier - getting blown out/embarrassed, at home, could end up being better than if we lost a close game.   A loss like should force the team, coaches etc to take a long look in the mirror and begin to reevaluate things, make adjustments, learn, etc etc

I'm not concerned about the Niners. I'm concerned about the Eagles. If the Eagles can fix or limit their issues they will beat anyone. The question is will they? The Eagles with a good running game and even only a slightly better pass defense will go to the SB. The question is can they fix the running game by January and can they get the slightest bit more out of their pass defense?

To be fair I don't think anyone thought Howie would do absolutely nothing to replace them lol.

If he was a real solution the Colts would not have released him.

Eagles start fast, let Dallas back in, but finish strong. They send the cowboys fan base into a spiral of depression and the cowboys go on to lose 3 of their next 4 games.

eagles 31

cowboys 21

I’ve given up on the eagles "playing a complete game/hitting on all cylinders”. They are what they are now. But what they are, is still better than the Fing cowboys. The eagles players will bail out the coordinators and make the clutch plays on the critical downs.

Maybe but he can still tackle and apparently that’s what we need back there right now.

I don't disagree, I was just responding to that podcaster insuating that Leonard would be an upgrade in the pass situation/play. As I said the guy will be a edge to edge LB for you guys. I just think he is more likely to be a better run defender vs trying to play in space against the pass. Prior to his injury (through the '21 season) he was averaging 7-8 PD a year...zero so far since then...actually he had one defended in 3 games in '22.

They kept Bradberry and Slay in leiu of CJGJ. Blankenship was replacement at safety and Maddox was the solution as a slot cb.

The ineffectiveness of the run game, when Johnson actually calls it, has been baffling. Is it as simple as Johnson abandoning the run too quickly? We really need to pound the rock at Dallas this week.

How many times do you hear comments about "sticking with the run game" on the broadcasts of other games when it's a couple yards and a cloud of dust. Then all of a sudden a RB breaks a big run and then the run game starts open up. It happens with almost every team. Runs for short gains are the body shots of football.

It goes back to my previous comments about Hurts and BJ always letting the opposition defense dictate what the Eagles offense does. There's this unmovavable commitment to the offense believing if another team is showing a perceived weakness that the Eagles pre-snap read of it should always work.

I hate it. Sometimes YOU have to dictate terms to the defense.

He didn't do exactly nothing though. He signed Morrow and Cunningham, signed Edmonds and Evans, drafted Brown, traded for Byard, etc. He threw some ish against the wall hoping that some would stick (not unlike what he did last season.) It's just that these guys collectively are worse than the guys that they're supposed to replace, coupled with a new DC that's floundering in the role with less than stellar personnel in the back 7. For as much flak as fans gave Gannon, he still had a top-5 (or even top-3?) defense at season's end, built on the foundation of the league's best pass defense. Now we're a bottom-3 pass defense and seemingly getting worse every week.

Epps isn't missed at all; I haven't seen any RBs run post patterns for TDs this season yet.  Blankenship fills his spot.  Byard hasn't been as good as CGJ yet -- hopefully he can improve with familiarity to the scheme.

Edwards should have been easily replaceable, and I think Cunningham is almost as good.  Dean was supposed to be White's replacement -- that's been a big dropoff.  Slay and Bradberry are a year older and a year worse.  Need to start investing in a younger secondary; not sure if Ringo/Jobe/Scott/Ricks, etc are anything in the long term.

I never realized how much Maddox would be missed.

When was the last time the Eagles swept Dallas?

2011. And the last time we swept them when they were a playoff team, 2006.

I disagree, the passing game needs work too. Yesterday's passing gameplan was not pretty. Route combinations aren't putting pressure on the defense and the receivers are not creating separation.

He cut Morrow too lol.

We didn’t make the playoffs in 2011.

Could've, would've, should've but the results speak for themselves. The Niners scored a TD on 6 straight possessions last night. We're a bad defense and getting worse.
