Coaches need to read each player and realize they all develop differently.

Punt returns helped Desean get into the flow of the NFL while he was learning to be a WR.  I think they reinforced his swagger.  They backed off PR’s once he established himself at the position.  Maclin needed to get pulled off, as did Reagor.  One ended up being a very good WR, while the other was a bust, but it was still a weight around both of them.

In general, I’d rather not see a young player that we are projecting as a starter getting thrown out there on PRs.

the Eagles have no reason at all to weaken the PR position.  Covey didn't get to the pro bowl I don't think but a case could be made that he was the best.   Most punt return yards.  Most 20+ yard returns - 7.   I think you should keep your job if you do what Covey did last year.   I would think the Eagles would increase his usage at WR.  Actually give him something else to do.   His resume has,  in college,  a lot of catches,  some runs and some throws,  with a really high passer rating.  3 passes and 2 were touchdowns.  High school QB who ran a whole lot, never lost a game,  2 state championships.  He's a versatile weapon.     Throw an easy pass to him, and then have him do punt returner type yards after catch.  They just didn't care about doing that last year.  Maybe they'll care about doing that this year.   Someone was asking a couple days ago about whether Covey was the starter, and I thought Parris Campbell was,  but I think that Covey could be the starter.  He does the weapony stuff - the runs,  and even can do throws,  with the kind of agility that lets him lead the league in 20+ yard punt returns.

The wide receiver position is arguably the deepest position in the 2024 NFL draft but Pro Football Focus believes Wilson is the best wideout in a critical area: blocking.

Here is what they had to say about his blocking ability and how it will help him at the next level.

Wilson measures in at a whopping 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, so it’s to be expected that blocking would be one of his fortes. His 73.9 run-blocking grade was the highest among the top 20 receivers on PFF’s rankings.

His long arms can engulf smaller defenders, and he obviously dominates them with length. As a player who might end up at tight end at the next level, he’s the best blocker of the receivers.

Those arms are good OT arms,  longer than some of the OT giants.

If long arms help OTs block, they should help WRs block.  Best run blocker, now an Eagle.  With a 6th round pick.  Great pick.   I had him on my day 3 / udfa get list.

heres ras compare lane johnson v johnny wilson.  meant to show the hand and arm similarity.

I think it’s pretty clear the Eagles went into the draft expecting to address either the right side of their OL or their secondary (or both).  The board allowed them to address secondary twice.  And Becton’s availability gave them the flexibility to adapt to that board.

Becton brings back memories of the Chance Warmack signing.   Intensely highly regarded prospect who flamed out in a bad way with their original team, weight and conditioning issues…very exciting on paper to get them at second chance Stoutland U.

But teams don’t let go of first round OL if they feel there is a chance of salvaging them either.

Very true, but I feel there’s more reason for hope in this case because the Jets have been trying to improve their oline for years.  They have not been able to do it.  I think there is a strong case for believing they don’t have the coaching element that strong oline teams do. It’s safe to assume that, if healthy, Stout will bring out the best in Becton.

Still, it may not work out.  But if Becton fails under Stout, he’s basically done…as a potential future starter anyway

I had actually posted this last year to use him this way at the end of the season/playoffs to try and get a spark for the offense using him in the slot.  That offense was sooooooo pathetic and unimaginative.

Even if they win game 2 the issues remain: two consistent offensive players on the team.  Nobody else can be relied on from game to game.  Relying too much on older players.  It's a younger man's game.  The rebounding and lack of fast break points show it.  Sixers are a plodding team and if Maxey or Embiid have good but not great scoring games the Sixers lose.  And of course, the bench is horrible.  Barely NBA caliber.

In conclusion: old, slow, can't shoot, can't run, can't rebound, and when Embiid sits leads disappear.  And Morey's big plan this offseason is to sign 34 year old Paul George.

It will be interesting to see if DeJean has a shorter path to the starting lineup than Mitchell does.  DeJean could have an inside track to the starting nickel CB role over Maddox, who was brought back on the cheap and usually has one foot in the trainer’s room.  Mitchell can hopefully beat out Bradberry for the boundary CB opposite Slay, but Toledo is a long way from the NFL.

I heard a few commentators talk about how Iowa players are coached up to step into the NFL right away.

Nah... Toledo is just about an hour and half from Canton, where it all started.   Closer than most schools, actually.

I don't see Bradberry on the team to start the regular season, so its a battle between Mitchell and Ringo, IMO.  And I lean advantage Mitchell.

I can only imagine what Moore is going to do. Night and Day from Day 1.

OC Kellen Moore is limited by what Jalen Hurts can do.

So, it's more like...I imagine Jalen Hurts will have a better OC this year.

And, then, it's up to QB1 to get it done.

Receiver tackles are best tackles.

A bunch of statues and QBs who hold onto the ball too long. This is not a "Becton is good" post, but rather a "he'll naturally be better here".

Or... a "HE will be the same here, but it won't show up in the stat book".   I believe he can be better here with Stoutland coaching him.   But, it comes down to his health and his commitment.

Of course the QB needs to execute. But there's more than just a QB1 on the offense. Definitely going to look way more different than last year I don't care how down folks are on Hurts.

They paid Barkley a lot of money (by RB standards) to have a big impact. He's not expected to just be a slight upgrade over what they had

Yes sir. Beast running game. For the air attack man just give me some hot routes and blitz beaters for starters lol.

I don't know if mid rd draft picks really tell much but I like to think Shipley & Smith suggest hot routes lol

Can Hurts do hot routes and blitz beaters? I don't think so.

Watching Wilson…his game revolves around his incredible catch radius.  He’s not actually physical and doesn’t really out muscle guys.

Thats why he dropped.  It’s a fine line between a matchup nightmare and a player who can’t separate from a DB but also can’t toss them around, which is a useless player.

That kind of feels like shades of JJaw 😕

I thinks also diet/conditioning…thats a discipline issue

When he was injured, he ballooned to 400lbs and trimmed down to a svelte 350lbs last season.  I would be shocked if a weight clause is not included.in the contract.

Equally. Being away from the Jets could do him good, especially when not pressured to the guy

Sure he can. That stuff is easy. Anybody can be Captain Checkdown. We just didn’t have it in our offense last year.

Our new goal line back!
