I think the QB is supposed to read the defense and alert his WRs/call hot.

Did he? We will never know. But based on what his WRs did,  it looks like he didn't.

Based on what we know of Hurts, like how other defenses recognize "he can't read", he probably didn't.

Based on the fact that he has 2 veteran WRs and a very veteran TE and these guys should know what they are doing,  it appears as if they didn't get the call.  Or else they likely would do the right thing.  So again,  we can surmise that he probably didn't.

Could be. However, the "conventional wisdom" against the empty set is to blitz the QB. SOP. Somebody has to be the hot read. It's not all on the QB or shouldn't be. Whether it is on Hurts or on the scheme, it happened too often and, in my view, is attributed to coaching. We never used it that I can recall, and that I attribute to scheme.

  • For those that know me here I wanted to pass on the good news. I will be retiring from fulltime work in October of this year. Looking forward to not working 10 hour days anymore.

Tough to do when they're not in your system. Check this out. We run out of an empty set. All five receivers go out. They rush six against five OL. One more than we can block. Is there a hot receiver? NO. Nobody looks back to the QB. That's a system breakdown.

What we do not know is whether there was a hot read call that Jalen did not make because he did not recognize or properly respond to because of the blitz.  It's possible this was his mistake.

Fundamentally the design of the routes should be to win early in an empty set call.  I think that is the schematic problem.

He's a good QB who can't stay healthy in college.

maybe not back in his days as a running QB. Once he became a pocket passer, at Washington he stayed health, and happens to be the best pocket passer in the draft now.

I think you mean he can take a Choice cut and make it turn out like Prime.

I take choice and make it into Wagyu.

Washington hasn't changed. We're fine.

So Will Shipley is a little redundant with Gainwell. They do a lot of the same things. Now, maybe the Eagles just want guys like that. But I wonder if maybe the Eagles would throw Gainwell and a conditional pick to the Texans for Dameon Pierce. Pierce gives the Eagles a little bit different of a flavor compared to what the Eagles have and Gainwell could give the Texans someone who can play a little bit of a scat back role since Mixon is a guy who gets a lot of carries.

Player for player trades in the NFL are rare so doubt it happens, but just throwing it out there as a trade idea.

Thats a major insult to Shipley. That aside, I like the idea.

Understood.  But it helps to know what the stickers mean.  ;)   Otherwise you are paying for something that might not mean what you think it means.

Impressive!   Can you do that with Select?

I blame Hurts. I think theres too much evidence point the blame at him. At the same time, it doesnt matter anymore. We supposedly have a different offense coming in with motion and such like a real NFL offense should. All that matters is that Hurts finds a way to succeed in an offense which will require more advanced thinking/reading. If he cant, we will be trading for Michael Penix in a year or 2. If he can, we probably have a few more Lombardis coming our way.

He's at worst staying on the practice squad.

Calm down RR, I'm not sure Milton Williams will be able to do that

I think Carson Strong got paid more than that. No guarantee.

So what's left to do in FA or Trades?  What do you think is realistic?

IMO, the next big question is what to do with Milton Williams. The only 2025 UFA decision of consequence. Do they extend him now? Trade him to a team that didn't draft DT? Just sit back and let him walk? It's a tough call, because he'll make more on the open market than what we're willing to pay him.

I have a hard time seeing how they could make this work. He's likely to find more money and more playing time somewhere else.

Also which teams drafts did you like best?

I liked Charges, Birds, Steelers, Commanders

Supposedly just the MNF pregame, for now.

some interesting info on Pierce in this SI article.  Worth considering Howie.

Eagles obviously. Then my next favorite would be the Chargers.

Yeah. Im thinking they let him walk and draft another DT next year. It appears Ojomo is going to get a shot at some playing time this year so how he performs will determine how high of a draft pick theyll need to spend on that position. Or if some mid-level free agent will suffice.

I dont think theres any decision needed right now. This one is a wait and see how it plays out scenario with Williams likely gone, and youre just figuring out how hard you need to hit that position in the offseason.

I think this is good. No Kelce overload. 1 show per week. We still get to see him, and he should have ample time for other interests outside of football. Good for him. I hope its big bucks.

Looking forward to Ojomo getting more snaps in 2024. Think he could be a big part of the DL rotation.
