Is there some new rule on when you can start interviews on coaches in the playoffs or something like that?

It goes a little something like this

NFL’s New Hiring Rules: What Has Changed in 2024?

Black Monday is just around the corner, and many NFL head coaching jobs are going to be open. That means teams are hiring. What are the NFL's new hiring rules?

January 7, 2024 | 12:15 PM EST

There is just one week left in the 2023 NFL regular season: Week 18. The end of the regular season means the 2024 playoffs are almost here. It also means, however, that many teams will see their seasons end.

Among those teams with their seasons over, some will fire their coaches (or already have). That means they need to hire new coaches. What has changed in the NFL’s hiring rules in 2024?

What Are the NFL’s New Hiring Rules?

In May 2023, the NFL instituted a new hiring rule to improve the interviewing and hiring process for head coaches. The change was made to make the process more fair, thorough, and inclusive. It especially aims to advance the league’s Anti-Tampering Policy, which is applicable through May 31, 2024.

The resolution included two changes. The first change is that teams cannot interview a head coach candidate who is employed by another NFL team until the third day after the conclusion of that team’s Week 18 game. This primarily protects teams that did not qualify for the playoffs or teams that earned a first-round bye.

For teams that play in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, coaches cannot be interviewed until the following Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on which day their game is played on.

The second change states that no in-person interviews are permitted with candidates employed by other teams until after all Wild Card games have ended. Before the end of the Wild Card games, in-person interviews can only happen with candidates employed by the team hiring a head coach or candidates not currently employed by the NFL.

This is a much bigger Sirianni problem than than a Howie problem...

But I really hope the Eagles avoid a lot of patchwork old guys next year. Just let the young guys get the reps and grow. Hire a good staff that can help them grow.

Watching Morrow and Bradberry out there was one of the most hopeless feelings as a fan. You knew they were pathetic, and you also knew there was no upside to how pathetic they were. It was just gonna get worse.

I was mostly joking about the Eagles hiring Belichick.  Pretty sure Lurie hasn’t been a fan of his since the Reid era - there was a lot of disrespect towards Reid and the Eagles franchise by Belichick during those years and I doubt Lurie has forgotten that.

In fairness byard is slow and looks old

Remind me never to get excited about Howie signing a "has been" in a position of need mid season and us crowning him for it.  Nothing but failures.  This year was Byard and Leonard.  Awful signings in retrospect.

I called it before and ita starting to look more likely.  Sirianni and Brian Johnson will be back.  Reich will come in as a senior assistant/QB coach/pass game coordinator.   Patricia will be back as DC but with his scheme.

Reich is wanted in Chicago

So that hit by Kerby Joseph on Tyler Higbee towards the end of the Rams/Lions game was a confirmed torn ACL for Higbee.

Trice was invisible in the biggest game of the year.

Zinter falls that far, would be a major steal.

I like Reich, but I definitely see that failing after 2 seasons.

Don't forget Roby.  Another failure and midseason signing.   Or Cunningham, pre-season, post-training camp signing.

Lurie knows Belichick would (rightly) tell Lurie to shove it up his arse with all of his idiotic meddling.  Lurie's ego is as big as the f'ing galaxy at this point so he's only going to hire some newbie who doesn't know how full of ish he is.

Aside from the horrible play, one of the worst things about the game was Todd Bowles smiling the whole game on defense.  He knew he could clown them all game and was enjoying the hell out of it 🤦‍♂️

I wouldn’t be shocked if they brought Vrabel in for an interview if they end up parting ways with Sirianni.   Seems like could potentially be a nice fit here.

Anyone else think it's kinda weird Brown wasn't at the game?

I meant to ask that yesterday. Honestly I don't even know if that's a policy thing or what, or if maybe he would have been uncomfortable on a plane....or he just hates the coaches.

Throw byard and maddox in there as well, they were both nauseating.

I don't believe injured players who are already determined as out travel with the team.

Did Dallas fire McCarthy yet?  I would take him in heartbeat if he’s willing to take a coordinator position/co head coach. He did absolute wonders with Dak while in Dallas.

Imagine this scenario:

Bill Belichick as head coach/co head coach  - takes on all defensive duties/defensive player personnel decisions, etc - instant top 10-15 NFL defense.

Mike McCarthy offensive coordinator/ co head coach, with some offensive player decisions with Howie, etc

Match made in heaven.

Superbowlzzzzz!!

Hope this is sarcasm.  Dak did plenty well enough before McCarthy got there.  I have no interest in McCarthy here.

Yup.

Bowles was just sending telegraphed zero blitzes all game and Siri and co had zero answers for pretty basic stuff by bowels.

Watched the video, he's right.  And someone needs to play that clip for Lurie.

Have a feeling Lurie heard it himself.  He cares about the outside perception

How unacceptable is this? If you know your QB’s strengths are passing the short - intermediate routes to the middle of the field - why on Earth would the vast majority of your scheming and play calling be passes to the outside?  Blatant incompetence.   If this doesn’t get Sirianni fired, I don’t know what will.  SMH .
They had 1 amazing play to the middle of the field last night and never went back to it!  Unacceptable!

It was mostly tongue-in-cheek.  Hence the "Superbowlzzzz” at the end. ;)
