Why would the top LB matter more than the top CB we got in?

For run D? Seems obvious.

SO the blockers aren't going to tackle the returner?

The blockers are going to …ughh…block…obviously…for the returner.

Who makes the tackle the kicker?

Anybody that can avoid/disengage from the blockers, have good angle of pursuit and tackle well. The exact same thing I’ve been saying since the beggining.

Yeah,no one will even trade a 7th for him LOL

Not to take on his money. Whole league knows we are cutting him also.

IDK that would be similar to a volleyball spike serve, except with your foot. Very difficult

Not that extreme…but believe you’re understanding my point to counter this technique being the blockers raising their hands high….to make it just that more difficult.

From where is this so called angle of attack coming from on a kick off with guys spread out across a line? You also said they are "blockers" So who makes the tackle?

Blockers…block for the returner…c’mon man. Blockers block. Kicking team tackles. You’re going backwards.

You asked if I thought we were better 5th is better than 7th?

And I can accept your answer on this

What about depth?

Hurts was kind of handcuffed with crap play calls why wouldn't AJ and Smith perform better with the handcuffs off? Add Goedert being used correctly also

AJ and DeVonta had some career season stuff. AJ broke the record with consecutive sick games. I hope they both do perform better. But no denying that’s a tall ask. It’s possible…but it’s also possible one gets injured also. AJ went for 1,456 yards. That’s nothing to sneeze at. I do believe he can top that….would be a huge season to do so though. Completely the optimistic viewpoint for it to happen.

Hurts will have multiple weapons, same or better than last year. He could have multiple guys open too and he needs to make the reads. He won't have bubble screens to count on nor the tush push. It's on him as he constantly states . Now it's time to stop saying it and deliver

Why won’t he have screens and The Brotherly Shove? I’m completely expecting us to utilize these this season.

On these returns the rules against creating a wedge would seem to be much more difficult to avoid. The whole situation would seemingly be bunching up the players so much more.

A wedge is the blockers holding hands....doesn't really seem difficult to avoid...for 2 reasons

1. The returner will catch the ball around the 5 or so...the blockers will be 30 yards in front of them and be short handed 9 vs 10.  It's not really bunched like the old school kicks where the blockers could run back and form a wedge.

Idk it seems you are missing the concepts of the positioning of these guys.  They aren't going to be raising their hands to block a kickoff and they are 5 yards away from the kicking team who is going to move first. That's about 2 or 3 strides.  It's basically going to be a spread out OL type of blocking with the ball carrier starting deeper with the ball.

A "wedge block” is not permitted at any time. A wedge block is defined as two or more players intentionally aligning shoulder-to-shoulder within two yards of each other, and who move forward together in an attempt to block for the runner.

It’s a little tricky…but I guess they can’t really call a penalty for this the way they are aligned.

So ... 2 yards apart ???? Lol... thar happens every return...lol.

If you are shoulder to shoulder thar means they are right up against each other... how would it be a wedge block two yards apart... 6 feet wide...they could fit two defenders between them..lol

That’s how the official rule is written.

It’s talking about moving together forward…which is why I believe it clears things under these new rules….you can’t really do it.

It's not really tricky unless you let your mind wander.

Kicks are going to be kicked with the intention of landing close to the goal line....the kickoff team then moves as soon as the ball is caught and the blockers will engage asap around the 30... one cover guy will be free from the start..and the play starts from there.

I'm sure if a team is ahead that they may just kick it through the endzone and concede the 30 yard line.    I don't think it's going to be real complicated.

And how have you seen it interpreted since?

If you see the left tackle and the center moving forward together....do you see that as a wedge?   What do you consider a wedge?

Not sure what you are arguing much about when I agree with you here? I questioned at first. Then pulled up quoting the official rule. So then I concluded it’s not really possible to flag anybody for doing this under the new rules.

If you had only one returner on this new KO. Then had two guys at the 30 outside the hash…on the same side of the field together….technically the would fall under forming a wedge. That’s really the only way it could be done. But could they really flag that…under these rules?
