Lurie Said to Explore Sale of Stake in Philadelphia Eagles (1)

  • NFL owner said to be working with BDT & MSD Partners
  • Bills, Dolphins also exploring stake sales as values rise

By Gillian Tan

(Bloomberg) -- Jeff Lurie is exploring a sale of a minority stake in the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

Lurie is working with BDT & MSD Partners to solicit interest from potential suitors for a stake in the team, which may be valued at more than $7.5 billion in any transaction, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential information. The $7.5 billion figure represents a multiple of roughly 11 times revenue, and would represent a record price tag for an NFL team.

The size of the minority stake hasn’t been determined, and interested parties have been told there will be no path to a controlling stake, the person said. Talks are at an early stage, and it’s possible that no deal will be reached.

A representative for the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A BDT & MSD spokesperson declined to comment.

The team won its first Super Bowl in 2018, beating the New England Patriots. Lurie, 72, has a net worth of $5.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He’s controlled the franchise since May 1994, when he acquired the Eagles from Norman Braman for a reported $185 million, a record for a sports team at the time.

The possible deal comes as a portion of another NFL team in the Northeast is up for grabs. In April, the Buffalo Bills said its owner, Terry Pegula, hired Allen & Co. to explore the potential sale of a non-controlling, minority interest.

The efforts follow increased interest in teams from a slew of billionaires as well as private equity firms, which are awaiting a vote that would facilitate minority ownership, Bloomberg News has reported. That vote was delayed at a owner meeting last month.

A group led by Josh Harris acquired the Washington Commanders for a record $6 billion last year, and Stephen Ross has said he’s exploring selling a stake in the Miami Dolphins amid surging valuations.

If the coaches aren’t getting input on plays from the players, especially the QB, that would be bad.  AJ and Devonta talking about freedom in the routes is exactly that.  The playbook is going to gather in all the input as will the game plan.  The execution is where there needs to be a primary voice and that primarily has to fall on the coordinator.  I say primary because the audible is on Hurts.  But the construction needs to be a group effort.

I'll put it into a proper analogy.   The offensive coaches need to work like a commercial kitchen.   There is only ever ONE head chef.   There are a lot of other chefs, there's a sous chef, but all of them, every single one, answers to the head chef.   The others can offer suggestions.   They are instrumental in the execution, each one needing to flawlessly execute their assignment, but ultimately, ONE voice is the final authority on all of it.

So, yes, Moore will take input from the players.   But it's his call.   The QB can tell him what he's seeing on the field... but its Moore's call.  AJ and DaVonta can have freedom, as long as they are operating within the defined structure, they can't just free lance.   The playbook will be a group effort... but it will get the final approval, from one man.    And the audibles Hurts runs... they need to be part of the structure put in place by the OC.   He can't audible to some crazy play that doesn't have the right personnel on the field at the time.   The construction of anything is always a good effort... but it always works out best when it is directed by a single voice.

As for Hurts audibling... and AJ having freedom, we saw the effects of that last year when they decided to go their own way.   I believe their freelancing produced a game ending INT.  Not exactly what we are looking for this year.   Structure... freedom within the structure... but always structure - Moore's structure.

If I had to pick one side I'd want to win OTAs it's defense. We know the offense should be good and has the most talent. We want signs the D can improve

Agreed…don’t know why anyone would want to disagree with this

@Iggles_Phan

Listen to what Stout says about drawing out play design from the players.

Let's just hope the 5% being held over doesn't include the one-yard passes to Goedert, and Hurts bails out to the right and lobs the ball out of bounds over the bench.

No, the other 5% is entirely screen passes to Julio Jones

While I see this rationale, I’m with @jsb235 in wanting the five best guys out there.

Obviously, it is good to have backups with versatility along the OL.  You would think though that they feel better having Becton backup at OT rather than Steen (although we do know that Steen can play tackle as he did in college).  Nothing wrong with cross training both of them with the starters in case they are needed.

What I was saying is Ideally Steen is the better guard with Becton being able to fill in as needed at either position.  Would feel better at Becton filling in at OG as opposed to Steen at OT.  Having to move Becton from OG to OT means two changes on the line instead of one.

I was just telling the senior partner at my firm we should try to sign an NDA and get info at least.

It's not hard to change 95% of an offense when it had 12 plays and 10 of them were bubble screens, vertical routes and QB draws.

I got that. And absolutely, if Steen is the better guard then I want him in there. However, if Becton is clearly better, then the issue is more complex. When I saw Becton as a rookie I thought he was going to be a top 5 OT in the league in a year or two. Injuries derailed that but he has a world of talent. As a rookie he reminded me of Jonathan Ogden; that's how good I thought he could be.

Becton has said the transition to LG was easier than RT, some players are "one handed," he seems to be one.

This would make him a bad candidate to play RG, at least not without a lot of work to get comfortable.

If they extend him as Lane's replacement, won't surprise me if Mailata gets reps at RT just in case, since he's shown he can play there.

This is the first time that Becton has been at a professionally run organisation that has a history of winning and the sports science side of things is very well run.  And his position coach is the best out there.  He's likely learning a lot and has a lot less pressure on him not having to start.  It's up to him to show he's no longer that player that was at the Jets

The NFL: "We're excited to bring the NFL to Brazil!"

Brazil: "We'll murder the fans of both teams for wearing green."

Brilliant idea to **** yourself out to a country to where you can't even wear your proper uniforms because of gang activity. I hate what corporate greed is doing to the league. Stealing it away from the people who made it what it is today and giving it to international fans who don't care.

But all joking aside, taking a game to a country that doesn't have a big fan NFL base and the USA hasn't had military bases in them to spread the word, is a stretch. Its just done for PR vanity than actual sporting clarity

That's really, really dumb.  We don't even have a jersey that does not include green at all.

This sounds like a very good reason to not hold a game in Brazil.  Cancel it and bring it to the Linc.

That's a stupid choice of teams for Brazil.    Great job NFL.
