I sure hope so...

And less than they should have. Johnson’s offense took a page from Chip Kelly. Run about four plays and assume the other teams can’t figure them out. And don’t worry about blitzes.

Just to add on to what I am and have been saying about the practices this team runs...

The NFL's CBA has limited practice time to a ridiculous level.  It has limited contact to a ridiculous level compared to previous generations.   And I get it.  I understand WHY they are doing that.  They want to limit the head trauma and CTE.   And I'm all for that.   BUT, with the limited time actually ON THE FIELD now due to all the restrictions, and the limits on when the players and coaches are allowed to actually work together... not taking advantage of the time that is allotted is not good for the team.   It is not good for keeping the players and coaches on the same page.  It is not good at working to develop the younger players.   It is not good and ensuring that communication on the field amongst the players remains strong so that there aren't blown assignments.

I'm all for veteran work loads being reduced at times.  But, I am NOT in favor of the practices being ended before the allotted time allowed.  Those minutes being trimmed off at the end of practices are minutes that younger players could have taken some extra reps ON THE FIELD under coach supervision.  If you are already dealing with a limited amount of practice time, why limit it even more voluntarily?   It makes no sense.    And for as much as we had a significant number of veterans on the team last year... Kelce, Cox, Johnson, Graham, Slay, Bradberry, etc.   We had an equally high number of very, very young players.    Blankenship was held out of the preseason games... a guy who had a grand total of 7 starts to his resume was handed the starting safety job and then wasn't on the field in game situations during the preseason to work on his communication skills in true GAME situations (not carefully orchestrated situations).  There's a lot to be said about the chaos of the actual game, versus practice.  The lights, the distance from the coaches, the crowd, the noise, the officials...  so much that really cannot be replicated in practice.   We also had a 20 year old CB that they drafted that was/is extremely raw.   How many extra reps did they take away from him by shortening the practices rather than using those extra minutes to work specifically with the younger players.   Jurgens, while the starting RG, was (and is) still learning playing center in the NFL as a second year player.   Steen was a guy that they are hoping can step in this year, how many extra reps could he have gotten if they'd taken full advantage of the practice times?  Dean as the green dot on defense.  Morrow just was added to a new team.   AND, both sides of the ball were under new coordinators, yet they acted like they were all together for the longest time working together without any changes or necessary adjustments.    Pure hubris that they didn't need to use all the practice time that was allotted to them.

I pretty much feel the same way. One thing I would add about preseason is it also doesn't need to be so vanilla. One can argue that the preseason snaps are useless since the game plan doesn't depict what the team would typically do in the regular season. For that reason, sitting the starters out isn't a big deal. But, IMO, they should at the very least run  plays from the previous season. Opponents already have film on that to study, so you're not exactly giving away any secrets.

Teams are given an opportunity to prepare players for the season ahead. It makes no sense at all to waste any of them.

4 TE seems like one too many for the 53. Especially if Wilson sticks as our Big Receiver

Depends. Moore ran a lot of 12.  I think Uzomah is competing with Castles for the Stoll role and Calcaterra is competing with Albert O. but also to a degree with Castles.  But they are all competing with the blocking sled.  I will throw in a few wildcards.  Can Davis-Price (can we call him TDP?), Milton or Nichols catch, run routes or block?  Might they be RB/Hbacks.  Don’t really like the last two much.  Another wildcard might be Poe.  He actually played some FB in college, isn’t much slower than TDP, Milton and Nichols and shows decent hands. He is pretty athletic.  Frankly I think he is probably a PS stash, especially with the Dylan McMahon selection

Not sure where this narrative that eagles need a TE is coming from

Goedert is solid then

I expect Uzuma wll be number 2, hes a pretty good blocker and a reliable receiver.

Then you have Albert O, Calcaterra and Castles probably all fighting for one spot.

Wilson is a WR not a TE.

Dad’s 80th birthday gift. Tour of Novacare and got to meet Nick. He kicked my butt at HORSE. Super nice guy though and spent over an hour talking to us.

That is UNEQUIVOCABLY FALSE.    I did complain about the 'soft' practices in 2022.   I complained about them leading up to the 2023 season.   I complained about them leading up to the 2021 season.   Yes, yes... they had a number of scrimmages with other teams and that's better because they can work on specific things.   And yet, they struggled with 'game situations' during the course of the season.  Short practices... soft practices... leads to bad tackling and bad conditioning.   The Eagles got nice 4th quarter results early in the year... and then it all came crashing down, and they got beaten in the games in the 4th quarter down the stretch... almost like their conditioning failed them, because they hadn't worked hard enough to be able to hang when it really mattered.

Being the lightest practice team in the NFL sure sounds like they didn't find a proper balance.

I think a few complained in 2022…lost in the fact that we went to the SB is how often the O would take long stretches off.

Say what you will about Siri, but you don't hear those kinds of stories coming out of the Eagles.

And you know this is Fangio's last stop, he has full support from the FO.  If players won't work, they'll soon be ex-Eagles.

Notice Howie has guys like Dean and Blankenship, add Trotter and DeJean, high IQ, instinctual players who won't be overwhelmed by Fangio's schemes.

Should add Mitchell to that group.  The Athletic had a good article on him this week.  I liked this (Parker was his defensive coach):

"When you look at his press-man clips, every one is not the same at the Senior Bowl,” Parker said. "He chose to use different techniques on different guys by what they’re doing, trying to make it the most difficult for them in an offensive drill that’s set up for them to win.”

So, what did Mitchell learn in Toledo’s defense? Kehres and co-defensive coordinator Ross Watson built a base 4-2-5 system that often deployed "Quarters” coverage. Yes, that contains zone principles. Toledo believed giving its defensive backs space in off-man alignments helped limit explosive passes.

But Mitchell’s distinct speed and quickness allowed Toledo to play him tighter within the scheme. Kehres says they often placed him on an island in "catch-man” techniques in which Mitchell "caught” receivers in stride and basically played man coverage thereafter.”

I also think I am a fan of Mitchell’s grandma:

"Parker made it his mission to draw out some intensity in the young cornerback’s demeanor. He urged Mitchell to flex a little bit after major plays, to spur energy throughout the stadium. Mitchell erupted during practice and in a game — until his grandma got a hold of Parker and asked Mitchell to stop showboating.

Yes ma’am, Parker replied.”

BTW, @HazletonEagle and @Original Sin, think I may be checking out his roommate in college, Maxen Hook, an All MAC S, this coming college season.  May have some Blankenship in him.

Phillies out to an easy 5-0 lead in the top of the 4th...

I would take Siakam over Brandon Ingram

Bunch of things. Asked about how they judge desire as opposed to physical abilities on draft picks - he talked a lot about doing deep background dives, talking to high school coaches, etc. He admitted that the competition stuff is useful but guys can fake it. Sounds like they have really emphasized character post Reagor.

My dad asked him about the collapse last year in a roundabout way - asked how players can look like they have quit. He got the idea and basically said things snowballed and confidence was lost. That they needed to move on but the team was just stuck. Said he stresses moving on, and that is the point of dawg mentality. Said it just didn’t get through.

I asked him how he controls the urge to just lose it on reporters/WIP. He said he mentally says the smart ass answer in his head and then catches himself. But he’s not so great at that during the game…

Talked a bunch about how complex schemes have become, and I asked how often are players running it correctly versus just winging it on instinct. He said fans would be surprised how much guys are sticking to assignments. He talked about Jalen being one of the smartest players he’s had. And that Kelce was off the chats.

Finally, just talked roster construction. He did say we should be excited about the new CBs. But also just talked a bunch about family and stuff.

We also met Cam Jurgens. Nice guy too.

I also tried to ask him about salary cap allocation and how they view incremental dollar spending by position, and he just said he’s very lucky to have Howie.

What is the position of the player who goes onto the field when Brown and Smith come off the field?  If that's TE,  the Eagles need a TE.  But I think it's WR,  so the Eagles need a WR who can block,  and it seems like Johnny Wilson.  Day 3 rookies generally don't play much though.

The Eagles don't need "fast TE" as much as they need "big WR who can block.

The Eagles have Goedert, Uzomah, Albert OK, Calcaterra.  Last year,  the Eagles didn't give that many snaps to backup TEs.

The Eagles need a TE - remember that later this season when Goeddert is hurt and none of the other guys are a decent back-up. Oh - sounds like last year.
