Never made sense to me.To be honest, I am actually pretty good at this level as well. I just miss being an individual contributor. I still can jump in and code if I need to, but at my level it's actively discouraged - I'm need to be in the "delegate the work" mentality. My former boss semi-retired and I took his old role, and now he reports to me. He's loving being back in the bullpen, and has no regrets when I complain to him about what I'm dealing with lol.

For example, the Hoover Dam sends its electricity to California. The things with solar plants is that they tend to be in places that don't have much of a demand for them, because places with huge open fields tend not to be populated with people or industry.

Perhaps you and a few others agonize with your OCD over every aspect of what you write, but normal people just type a message out on their phone and move on to the next thing. The fact you think a ribeye is some level of high financial achievement is fascinating like it's a Wagyu tomahawk. Says a lot about your situation.Yeah WGB! Follow DieHardOnAHillFan's lead and move on from stuff. JFC

Some people hate the move away from the actual development work and some don't. I spent about 10 years actively developing stuff and then the next 30 there was zero. There was a brief period of about a year or so where I wasn't totally happy but that went away. Plenty of other stuff to do and there is a lot of opportunity to contribute in other ways which actually end up being more important for those that know what they are doing.

I picked up side work to keep my skills up because I felt I needed to still understand and do the job of my people if I was going to effectively direct them. This role is the first where I'm not really making any individual contributions and frankly I don't have the time for side work. Kids are older and into more activities. I'm older and can't do the late nights on the regular without it impacting my regular job.I'll adjust, but I have to learn how to direct the work without having as good or better understanding of the way the work should be done than my underlings. Different kind of management than I'm used to.

Different kind of management than I'm used to.Each situation is unique of course but for me I found out pretty quickly that I knew more about software development than 80% (maybe even 90%) of the developers and that was all the way to the end for me when I retired two years back. Yes, the coding languages and lots of the manner of organization of software has changed but in the end the stack is still full of bits/bytes and the same basic challenges exist and really new breakthru constructs are few and far between. I'd find myself needing to spend an extra 5 or 10 minutes to look up something when I hit a new term or open source package or model or something but once I understood it I'd be fine. These days developers get so much for free and they end up knowing a lot more about what is available to use rather than how it all actually works. That gives them great speed. However, when they hit something tricky they can really get stuck. For instance, figuring out how to recreate a bug or work thru a performance bottleneck was sometimes lost of them if they couldn't find instructions from someone else on the net. Often they just don't know what is actually going on. Stick your nose in there and don't sell yourself short. There is a lot of talk/noise out there but quite often it is just that, noise.
