I'm actually surprised.

He will make some deals with smaller countries and call it the greatest deal a President has ever made.

  • Some quick thoughts on "Liberation Day," also known as "Liquidation Day." Obviously, these tariffs are way beyond anything the market expected. I think very little of Trump and the administration

Explain how China manipulates my company by selling us readily available, inexpensive parts and subassemblies that we assemble and sell for a nice profit.

Does China permit your company to produce some of its inexpensive parts and subassemblies? Or is your company required to buy ALL their parts and subassemblies from Chinese companies? The reason I ask is a story I read on another nonpartisan site that I believe to be true. A guy had a furniture company. He bought a lot of furniture from Chinese companies but had a factory in the U.S. as well. The Chinese suppliers said they would guarantee a steady supply of furniture at competitive prices BUT he had to close his U.S. factory to get this deal. So he would have no choice but to rely on Chinese suppliers, otherwise he would have no business. If the Chinese suppliers have a change of heart, too bad for him, his production capacity was history. So it would be in his best interest and the best interest of those in the same predicament to pressure the U.S. government to not interfere with Chinese ambitions. I know this sounds like a fake story and maybe it is but I don't really think so.

Well looks like Cheeto finally blinked.

Weird. I was just told by Mike he's the only recent president with the balls to follow through with this plan.

The United States has a chance to do something that should have been done DECADES AGO. Don’t be Weak! Don’t be Stupid! Don’t be a PANICAN (A new party based on Weak and Stupid people!). Be Strong, Courageous, and Patient, and GREATNESS will be the result

Would a war with China over Taiwan or any other number of issues that could happen preventing 80% of generic and 2/3 of brand drugs coming into our country impact our safety or stability if people can't access life saving drugs? Yes. It's a national security issue. So, absolutely.

Great, and if they end up in a war with Russia while China is taking Taiwan? What if there is another COVID that shuts down shipping? Bottom line is things of that importance shouldn't have more than 50% manufactured outside the US.

39 minutes ago, Diehardfan said:

Right, so if at least 50% is made here then you can go to them OR you can go to them at a later date. It's not hard to understand. Total dependence vs some global trade.

35 minutes ago, Diehardfan said:

Bottom line is we are dependent on other countries for essentials. That can't happen. Should we manufacture 100%? No, but it shouldn't be at 20% and 1/4.

We should not be importing or reliant on other countries which we have become. But whatever. Go back to railing against the clouds over tariffs.

Do you realize that it was mostly US based pharmaceutical companies that moved manufacturing of drugs to other countries like China?

Because it seems like you think the other countries, who we’re now in trades wars with, have somehow wronged us and not the US based companies who moved their manufacturing.

Wait, the manufacturing isn't coming back?

It sounds like only China are the tariffs still raised against and those vs China are up to 125%

China is still game on and the people who reached out to make a deal are on pause while they negotiate.

It has nothing to do with trade/tariffs/etc. I want at least 50% of all essential drugs including components made in the US.

So, the market read for now is that he is pausing tariffs on everyone other than China. You can read the post a bunch of different ways, but guys are taking the most optimistic view. We'll see if/when they clarify this. But he seems to have backed down and frankly done what should have happened from the start -- do something small, get our allies all on board, and then take on China as a collective. There have been issues with China for over 25 years -- IP theft, state sponsored entities, etc. I wouldn't slap a 125% tariff on them, but this is a drastic improvement.

The downside is Trump cooked any credibility he might have had by backing down after a week. That will make it harder to present a united front to China since they know he doesn't have the stomach for the fight. The next moves should be to fire Navarro and Lutnick, blame them for a terrible plan, and elevate Bessent.

How is it backing down to reward people negotiating?

This just hit, looks like it's only countries that didn't retaliate. The EU retaliated, so they still have a larger tariff?

Quote

Treasury Sec Bessent: Countries who didn't retaliate against tariffs will be rewarded; Confirms tariff increase on China due to escalation; Mexico and Canada included in universal 10% tariff - Meeting with Vietnam today, then Japan, India and South Korea

Didn't Canada retaliate as well?

They caved and came to him to make a deal and he is caving by rewarding them for negotiating? LOL OK.

Because one day ago the position was Vietnam can screw off and offering zero tariffs means nothing to us.

Yes, completely changing your mind with no new information is in fact caving.

Yes, DH, your boy caved. Regardless of how FoxNews spins it today this was not a good look for him.

Link to Bessent talking. Looks like he took the wheel.

Or he was pushing for more which good negotiators do and then went with what he really wanted. 60 countries or whatever it was caved and came to him and he's rewarding them. You better than anyone should know you don't ask for what you want you go above it.

Working at home today, news just broke in on the TV.  Wonder if the market will close over 40K?

How will trump bring back jobs to the US with these measly 10% tariffs?
