Becton plays high, and he failed at LT in NY. Once you fail, throw out draft position other than you once had great raw talent.

Now Becton has great reach, but not sure he's quick enough to be as effective outside a phone booth. He's not going to pull much from RG, but if you can maul the guy in front of you consistently . . .

On the other hand, if Stoutland can make Fred Johnson into a solid RT, imagine what he might do with Becton with a couple years to work on him.

If I were an athletic OL who is struggling on another team, I'd jump at signing a 1-2 year deal with the Eagles and attend Stoutland U, a career changer!

Lotta things wrong with this.

First he didn't fail at LT in NY; he got injured. Then injured again.

OTOH, he's not quick enough; on the other he's athletic. Make up your mind. He's faster than either Mailata or Dickerson, though not as fast as Jurgens. What he is is still raw.

If you pay close attention you'll note the Eagles run almost everything inside the tackles. The IZ is their staple play. So, not much pulling by anybody, though I'll cover this in another post. He does pull from RG, particularly in pass pro, much as Seumalo did. When they pull on running plays it's to the opposite side, not outside the tackle or TE. Now, that may be because they don't have any speedsters among the guards. What they have is power and they're running plays to the strength of their personnel. You'll also note that those bubble screens and short outs are becoming more successful. Only a bit, maybe on average two to three yards more per play but that's notable and it's due to teams having to stack inside against our power. Note too that deep crossing patterns are more successful because the LBs and safeties are pressing the LOS, again, because of the power run game.

And that's Becton's game. He's not alone in that, of course, but it's his primary talent as it is Dickerson's.

And that's Becton's game. He's not alone in that, of course, but it's his primary talent as it is Dickerson's.

The deep crossing patterns are more successful now because the opposing DCs are using a much higher proportion of blitzes because the book on Hurts is that he is susceptible to blitzes.  That often leaves the DBs on an island.

I have also (anecdotally) noticed that when the blitzes succeed against Hurts it is almost always due to pressure from the edge.  Our big O-Line bodies successfully keep the blitz pressure under control in the middle, but the edges are vulnerable.  I've also noticed that when the opposing D lines up with eight in the box, all indicating that they are coming, at the snap they drop off two or even three of the eight, and often the dropping off players are in the middle.  That often leaves one of our Olinemen with no one to block, thus negating one of our strengths.

Bonus - Dotson has 5+ catches

All-22, OL play, First half.

First thing I noticed was that Mailata pulled to the right on a screen pass to the left. Breaking the key concept. Usually, when he or Lane pulls it's to lead a Power run to the other side. The LB or safety tends to follow the puller. This time it got him leaning.

Dickerson and Calcaterra ran a version of the counter-trey. Calcaterra got himself killed on the play. The man simply can't block a lick. No wonder they've activated Stoll.

Jurgens ran a number of Powers. What we called fold blocks in days of yore. The guard blocks down and the center pulls behind him and leads the RB into the A gap on the other side of the center. He did it behind both Becton and Dickerson.

NO ran a triple blitz on one play.

All three of those guys on the right side blitzed. Lane is good but he can't block three guys. Hurts had no chance. Goedert is the hot read but he hadn't turned around before the blitz got home.

Hurts made a bad read on an RO:

He should give it to Saqoun because the DE , his read, is focused on him, but he kept and lost a yard. Then again, perhaps he was supposed to keep it, because it was exactly the same action that occurred on Saquon's 65-yard TD run. Which goes to an earlier discussion of play design.

Storm surge may be an issue, I'm not familiar with Tampa's stadium location. Otherwise Accuweather is calling for 1.6" of rain today, another .4" tonight. .2" tomorrow. Winds right now (Thursday at 9 am) 14 gusting 33. They'll have 2 days to clean up. Big Bend/Panhandle aren't going to get off so easy. Tallahassee is forecasting winds 61 gusting 119 tonight.

Category 4 storm surge could be significant.  Frankly, 2 days cleanup after a storm that significant is not a given even with a glancing blow.  Roger should move the game to the Linc to be sure.

Or maybe Sao Paulo. After all, that is our home stadium and everything went so well the first time we played there.

1 - It's the Jets.

2 - He started 13 games as a rookie at LT.  He started 16 games at LT in his 4th year, and he played 1 game in the two years inbetween.  The Jets had to make a decision on him by May 2, 2024, before he ever played a down in that 4th year.  They obviously weren't going to commit $13M to a guy that had only played 1 game in the last 2 seasons.   So, he became a free agent.  The question then becomes, how much money is a team going to put into a guy with that extensive an injury history?   Usually, the result is a one year prove it deal.   Becton is in the process of doing just that.

3 - It's the Jets.

Finally, let's not forget... it's the Jets.

Morning news said that storm surge along the coast near Tallahassee could be as much as 15-20 feet!!!!  (That's where the hurricane is expected to make land fall.).  Tampa will be on the "Dirty Side" of the storm, so it should still be rather significant there, but the best news is that by the time the Hurricane reaches max power, just before hitting land, Tampa will no longer be on the leading edge of the storm.  And Tampa appears to be on the line between where the intensity shifts from Hurricane to Tropical Storm.   That's the good news.   The bad news is that its on the wrong side of the storm for the vast majority of the storm passing, and as a result will deal with the "Tropical Storm" strength for a very long time.

This should be an interesting game if they don't change the time.   Sunday at 1 won't give much time to clean up or for the field to really dry out.   I wonder how well the field will be able to drain where everything around the field will be a soggy mess too.

When teams set up in goofy formations like that, I would love Hurts to just check into a qb draw. It's giving us free yards with 4 of our guys blocking three guys, only one of which is a DT. The only problem Hurts would have is avoiding the defensive players sprawled out on the turf.

Of course he failed at OT with the Jets.  Missing two full years out of four is fai.lure.  Then his stats stunk..  God forbid he ever plays OT for the Eagles.  Hurts will be dead.

He fought his way back onto the field in 2023 but he struggled immensely out there. Last year, the 24-year-old was second in the NFL in penalties (18) and was tied for first in sacks allowed (12). Per PFF, Becton finished with a measly 53.2 overall grade and a 56.3 run-blocking grade.

If you don't use the app Windy, you might want to take a look. It shows the storm track as being past Florida by the end of today. This gives a lot of time for cleanup. I would say the only thing that would affect the game would be a really catastrophic amount of damage in FLA. Flooding from Atlanta to the Ohio River Valley might be an issue closer to Sunday.

Obviously he stinks. Case closed.

P.S. on the first half OL:

Steen gave up a pressure on his first snap, then steadied.

Johnson was beaten inside a few plays later, then steadied.

I can't blame the player.  I doubt he's lying about the promise.  The NCAA has created this situation by not just de-regulating the payment of players altogether. Just make payments to the players unregulated and enforceable under established contract law.  It would avoid these situations.

Apparently there are NIL contracts and UNLV’s position is there wasn’t one.  The QB argues there was in essence an oral contract.  Classic oral contract issue.   UNLV will say there was no promise.  The QB will argue that there was and it was reasonable to conclude the assistant coach was empowered to make such an offer.  Would not be surprised if UNLV argues that the QB’s agent was familiar with the need for a written contract.  Wouldn’t be surprised if the assistant coach argues that what he stated was they could get some NIL money and suggested it might be as high as $100,000.  Typical oral contract arguments of he said/he heard.   Problem with the case for the QB is as old as oral contract cases.   The party seeking to enforce a contract must prove its terms and conditions.  The QB can prove performance of his obligation under the oral contract pretty easily.  But terms, not so much.  So he is using the leverage he has by withdrawing his performance.  UNLV has offered NIL money, just not what the QB seeks.  My bet is they work out a solution before the next game because each side has risk.

PA is a statutory employer state.  But to benefit from that status, there must be a signed contract between the parties at the time of injury. (Probably only you and I know what that means.)  I would never perform an obligation on an oral contract because it is such a hard thing to prove up the terms and conditions of such a contract.

But the original poster suggestion that the QB has put forth a roadmap for NIL negotiations in season while retaining his eligibility should negotiations fail.  Best move he had.

(Yeah, I miss contract law a bit since my retirement but not enough to go back to it.)

I guess someone has to be the first to go with a negative prediction. Our injuries concern me. Hurts ball security concerns me, and Siri’s boneheadedness concerns me. Hurts hasn’t been great against Todd Bowles’ defenses either. Another slow start on the scoreboard costs us.
