He came in super young and never got his foundation set.   Don't get me wrong I'm not penciling him in as a starter but I see some logic in giving Stotuland a crack at this project

Oh, I’m totally fine with picking up Green and seeing if that lump of clay can be molded into something good. I see this as similar to Chance Warmack in that that we are buying low and taking a shot on pedigree. While I’m not all that optimistic, I’m more optimistic about Green because he is a real athlete and not a slug like Warmack.

I think because of that IF and brown doesn’t have a lot of experience as a starter that we probably get an Anthony Harris or Edmunds type of vet to compete. I’m guessing third wave of FA or maybe a trade where the pick only conveys if he makes the roster and they can cut the guy and it costs them nothing

I think Justin Simmons will be a post draft signing

Those Void years add up though.  According to Spotrac they total $17 million of Cap dollars.

When a player is released, do those void years all accelerate on to the current year's cap?

Going to be interesting. He usually fills most gaps in FA so that he's not reaching for any particular position in the draft. But he may have future comp picks on his mind also. Maybe a few more trades will go down.

What spots would you call actual 'gaps' right now though?  Ojomo fills in for Williams.  Hunt steps in for Sweat.  Ringo steps in for Slay/Rodgers.

So, the gaps are:  1 LB position opposite Baun, 1 safety position, and depth along the DL.

But, they might really like Trotter Jr, which means that hole is filled, but depth LB is available.

The only 'gap' I see is the safety position they created by trading CJGJ.  BUT, that was an unforced move much more than letting the free agents walk, so I have to think they have a plan beyond just moving McCollum or Brown into that role.

Yeah i thought about him. Curious to know what he gets or being offer. Also past of me wonders if he just waits til after camps. He knows someone is going to pay him when someone gets hurt or isn’t good enough. He avoids the grueling TCs. If it’s here he knows what fangio wants from him.

See what I mean about the legs too wide and no knee bend?

He was basically asking for a job yesterday and talked up Cristian Parker as well. He didn't have a great year in Atlanta and got 6 last year so I'm thinking fairly low signing if it happens

100% but I also think it wouldn't push back the extensions at all. They will pick up the option and extend them off it like they did with Devonta Smith. Why delay the Carter extension when it will be more the longer you wait? That's a Jerry Jones move.

Excellent point.

Yeah, I asked yesterday how he looked with Atlanta. Because I only saw Atlanta for the Eagles game, that Sunday night, commanders game, and the Carolina game in week 18. And their defense the last two wasn’t particularly great. So I was curious how he looked.

Jonny Page has a film breakdown of Green on Bleeding Green Nation. One of his comments is that Green plays with a wide base in pass pro. That's an understatement. His feet are so far apart that he can't move. Try it. Take a stance with your feet outside your shoulders, then spread them another six inches on each side. That's his stance. He also has very little knee bend in that stance. He thus can't move and can't anchor. That's some horrible OL coaching. If a schmuck like me can see it it's stupifying that his OL coach couldn't.

A few hundred reps with Stoutland working him should be transformative. He could be a steal.

Connect his legs with a bungee cord.

I keep saying this but chemistry is a real thing. It's not hard plugging a few holes, but they just keep creating them and there is no guarantee a rookie or 2nd tier FA is going to fill them well.

It's not a move that they can remotely make right now based on how the cap would be impacted.  It's not happening.  Goedert is very likely, but the timing is going to be difficult to maximizing the benefit.

I don't love the idea of getting rid of a known productive commodity for a "chance to compete" guy. It would be different if it's like "We love Sydney Brown and think he can be as good as CJGJ."

Please draft a safety and draft one early. But not too early. Those go to the DL.

You talk about CJGJ as if he was the second coming of Dawkins, he was a middle of the road starting safety who made a few plays (6 picks is pretty good), but stopped a few others (running in to Quinyon when he had his first pro pick almost in his hands) and was often lousy in coverage (got toasted for multiple TD's) but he had a big mouth swagger to wind up the opposition. He cost more than twice as much as Blankenship last year and his performance did not reflect that disparity.

I don't think you need anybody that good to replace his on field product, the idea Brown absolutely can't do it is based on nothing other than we've never seen him play extended time with the ones, but he is at least as good at annoying opposing players.

I definitely trust Vic and Parker to evaluate that tape so if they do sign him then he passed their eval

It was so obviously about Goedert. I realize this is futile but must we humor all these ridiculous made up rumors

You’re an offensive line guru so i bring this up to you. My view of Green is that he is at a worse starting point than where Becton was when the Eagles and stoutland got a hold of him. Not talking about athleticism and physically just where they were at their performance. I get Becton wasn’t playing great either and was a bust too coming here. Imo green was one of the worst OL on a bad OL and has really been for lack of better words awful in the two years he’s played. So stoutland had work to do with Becton but i feel like there’s a lot more work to do with green.

My expectations are if stoutland can get green to be serviceable and competent it would be a big win for us. we need competent backups and maybe someone that can push steen if becton leaves. If he gets him to where Becton was that would be incredible but that’s not my expectation.

Sorry, but I don't want to hear about cash anymore. If a billionaire who just raked in a ton winning a SB needs to keep shelling it out because it's a competitive advantage they have then keep doing it. Long range thinking is good, but when you have the right team keep it together for at least one more year.

If, and it's a big if, Lewis Cine is finally fully healthy, then we're set at safety.

Could it be a Derrick Burgess moment?

Such pessimism.  Took your Negadelphian pills today huh?

Being realistic though, the last 4 drafts have been so good after years of bad defensive drafting. You do have to expect some misses, and that's not pessimism it's just reality of any team drafting. The 1st and 2nd round picks in the last 4 drafts have all become starters and very good ones, and some 3rd rounders and later have also worked out very well. They've found a good process and formula with the scouts, coaches, and personnel folks building their draft board.

In the past we said every team has misses, but Howie had too many on defense. Now he's doing really well, and I expect that to continue especially with Fangio's influence. But no matter how good a team is at drafting, some players just don't work out sometimes. So that may be inevitable.

What gives me hope and encouragement there is if they are able to draft well like this again and one of the guys just doesn't work out, the other picks should be solid so it's not as hurtful as it was in the past.

Even if they hit on them it could take a year or two. Great for the future, but won't help them next year.

Pre-June 1 - Yes.

Post-June 1 - No.

Perhaps a better plan is to find successors to those individuals now rather than to wait until that time comes.

Easier said than done, but I'm sure that is part of the plan.  However,  Stout may end up being the best ever, so there will likely be no replacing him.
