Vic typically shows both Ss about even. Common nomenclature is two high but that’s can be misleading depending on down and distance and length of the field. He plays a fair amount of Cover 6 but I wonder if part of that is to accommodate deficiencies in CB2. He also plays a fair amount of Cover 4. But with Jackson’s struggles last year, he had Q playing a lot of MEG (Man Everywhere he Goes) on the top WR. Based on the way he plays Cooper (a bunch of Match) and that he typically had Q and Slay playing MOD because of their speed. That impacts what the S role is and why Reed looked mediocre last year because his speed was evident and why when Mukuba went down, the slower Reed and Epps were somewhat exposed.

So, yes Reed stayed higher more times than not because that was how they adjusted to his lack of speed. Ideally for his (or Parker’s because he had a role too) secondary you want fast AND quick Ss with corner cover skills and S instincts and a nickel with similar qualities, (Sounds like Cooper because that is what you ideally want in the middle of the secondary). Mukuba demonstrated some of that. Would like more size but some of that gets sacrificed for quickness. Forget the old Weak (or Free) and Strong designations. I think Vic’s ideal situation is two interchangeable Ss. That’s why Carter practicing at S since he was traded for is so interesting to me.

^^This.

And it appeared that Vic used a lot of Dog concepts in Cover 2 which the outside corner in a trail position.

As for Reed, he did line up some as the in the box Apex.

Technically punter is a hole too. But DE is a big issue. We traded a 3rd for a DE last year because they underperformed so badly and he's gone along with Uche and Azeez.

Safety is definitely a hole. Sydney Brown can't play and Mukaba is coming off injury

We don't need no stinkin safety

We don't need no stinkin edge.

We're the Philadelphia Eagles. Just put anybody in an Eagles uniform at safety and edge and they will be Dawk and Reggie.

Looking at this without rose colored glasses, this team has a ton of holes and only so many draft picks. And I'm against trading a 3rd for Greenard. Would be a fine signing if he was a FA but they need to hit on draft picks.

Having Cooper really helps. He basically sends out 10 and then moves Coop around like a chess piece. That’s why i don’t like the idea of moving him to S.

Yes, he uses Coop as the outside and inside Apex A LOT. There are even disguises within that utilization. Pre snap, he is inside Apex and post snap he is in Zone. Thats what it appeared led to the pick 6 in the superbowl. Totally confused Mahomes. Now, I don’t know if he was supposed to break Apex responsibility on the play by design or if he just read it and made a play. But if it was by design, that was brilliant by Vic, if not, brilliant by Coop.

Good post. Couple clarifications, I'd add...

Vic has always gone with a heavy dose of c6/8, so I wouldn't say it's based on any weakness in cb2 we have here. That's just his MO to try to keep everything in front of the defense.

Also, the defensive play call and offensive alignment determines who is meg vs mod/match, not our personnel. By that I mean, if he calls trix and the offense comes out in a 3x1 (or motions into it) then it doesn't matter where any particular CB has lined up, the iso'd CB is automatically in meg regardless of whether it's Q or Slay/Jackson.

Agree with the rest though.

Excellent post. It was a bit of both: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWfXMrB237g

Cue the Lurie money truthers

I mean the Saints pick was for medical but yeah

The Eagles got an extra comp pick that was unexpected. I wonder if the NFL fudged things a bit to help the Eagles out by cancelling out Ojulari in the formula.

You mean kicker I think.

To me that contract was always right on the border from the prior year's cutoff. I'm not surprised given the lack of PT

No Mann isn't under contract

Whew, thank God!

Would you target any of the names below and what would we have to give up?

Travon Walker
Josh Hines-Allen
Chase Young
Kayvon Thibodeaux

Yaya Diaby

Here's a post most of you won't like. But I'm a lot more positive than I used to be, so you can handle a little negativity...because the Eagles world isn't perfect.

I think we are going to be left disappointed with the investment in Jihaad Campbell. First of all, I'm not complaining about the pick, which I loved at the time. I was really hoping they'd take him. However, I wanted him as an edge. It's a premium position, one we could have used (then and now), he's got the perfect specs for it, he looked great doing it when asked at Alabama, and it was outstanding value at that point in the draft. Fast forward 1 year...and I would agree with those who say he is an off-ball LB, not an edge. He did not look good rushing the passer as an edge.

The 2024 season and Zach Baun taught Howie (and many of us) that an off-ball LB can be a critical playmaker. This includes me, who always agreed with the interchangeable parts philosophy at LB. But a big deal for Zach Baun AND a first round pick at LB? Now we might have overshot the value of the position.

All of this is not to say that he's not any good. It's the investment that wasn't good. Had that pick gone to a different position, Nakobe could have been extended at that price. And if they still did not want to do that, Trott Jr. and Mondon project quite well as starting off-ball LB's next to Baun. I'm not worried about Campbell; he's going to be good too. But there's just no way he's going to be a first round pick better than Trott Jr. and/or Mondon as the 2nd best off-ball LB on the team.

Not every first rounder can be a home run...and given the incremental step back Campbell will be from Dean and the incremental improvement he'll be over Trott Jr/Mondon, this one kind of feels like a fielder's choice.

Chase Young all day. Once you get past the disappointment that he'll never be what he was drafted to be and the sheer disappointment the Commanders and 49ers have relative to the hype of his addition to those teams....New Orleans hit it big on the third pass. He's certainly not elite, but he's a very good player and figures to settle in as such for a few years now. But he's more of a trade deadline candidate than someone they could get right now.

The counterpoint here is that we are likely to move on from Baun after this year given the structure of his contract. I guess we could extend him again, but I doubt Howie gives him another top of market deal. Campbell is here for 3-4 more years.

His agent told him to always answer his phone because if you don't answer and accept an offer, you might miss out as they move on. Is it really that fast?

He also says Houston made him feel wanted...for the first time in his career. (The Eagles took a chance on an undrafted player and turned him into a starting player and voted him team captain but ok).

DeMonte Capehart is a good one too. Not at 23 though.

He acknowledged that in his good bye note to Philadelphia.

But now, he actually got paid.

Don't forget, we didn't even draft him. So how wanted exactly do you think he felt? Surely his new contract shows him appreciation on a whole new level.
