Let’s discuss Sydney Brown. Athletically, he should be a great S for the Fangio defense. He has the speed and most of the quickness, good size and strength. His problems are tackling (can be said of a lot of secondary players), football IQ (frequently needs to be acquired as an NFL S), and his worst trait is he bites (this can be solved but takes changing physical habits). He just doesn’t use his speed right. (Mondon has a bit of that at LB). He tries to run through the opposing player. He needs to catch the opposing player and then use quicks in tackling. Speed to get there or really to stay there. That comes from not overrunning the play. When at the player, he needs focus on the pelvic girdle. That tells you where the player is going. Vic does tend to play his Ss downhill a bunch, but that is kind of cliche, because the nature of the position is that the majority of of plays are downhill.

I am a bit immersed in UH men’s basketball right now. I invite folks to turn on a UH game and watch Emmanuel Sharp. He’s a G with real nice speed and quickness. Kelvin Sampson teams play defense. Sharp is all over the floor. He gets there, fast, gets wide and uses his quickness to block in the player. Then put on tape of DeJean. He plays nickel a bit like a basketball guard. He gets there, boxes, then quick tackles at least once a game. I really think Brown could do that if he breaks a couple of habits. Primarily how he tries to run through the player all the time. Part of that goes to setting on a single step from speed. The other and harder point is not biting. That’s eye adjustment towards the pelvic area, that tells you where the player is going.

He should reach out to Darius Cooper and practice with him all offseason. Doesn’t need to tackle, just box. Play some roundball and practice boxing. Then buy a couple of pads and a tackling dummy and practice getting there, boxing and quick tackling. Get his friend/girlfriend/trainer to practice the direction drill with a ball. That’s such a great defensive back drill because it teaches stopping and quicks. Then get on the field with Darius and put those to use as he runs routes. Of course, I thought Ringo was fixable too, so maybe this is wishful thinking but then again, this is a contract year for Brown. Can’t believe he hasn’t heard this ad nauseum for at least the last eight years or so.

What are the cap implications of this? Does it help the Eagles or is this Eagles shifting more money to him tongrt him back for this season?

Well at minimum its a pay cut. You would have to see exactly how the next two years are structured to really know. Before this they had an out with him after 2026 where it's $12M in dead cap to move but $1M in savings. My guess is he might be leaning to retire after this year but have another year in case he decides to come back.

Cap experts...how is the cap hit distributed between Eagles and Cardinals if we traded for Sweat?

I don't want to just give up draft capital to pay Sweat money we could have paid him last offseason. He left because we (wisely) chose to save money to extend the young players. If a sprinkling of draft picks can leave the Cardinals paying Josh Sweat to play for us....then let's talk

We would have to pay him $17M for 2026, assuming Cardinals trade him before his bonus is due which is in a week. After that, it would be $9.78M

Brown to Pats. Been saying that for about a year and a half now.

Think about your 2nd sentence.

How about F that. They won't drop that crap. Keep him and see how he looks in the new offense. If he is unhappy what else is new buy him a new book and try to win a SB.

AJ makes QB1 look average. Without AJ, he'll look like dog sheet. Next trade will be trading the average QB and finding a new QB. I'm ok with that. Anything to get QB1 off the team

Sounds like Howie tore up his option bonuses, because that's the only way they would gain cap space this year.

Freeing up money for Greenard?

And beyond?

It's an interesting exchange of draft capital to cap space. The simply could not afford Sweat last offseason and can't afford an egde of his caliber this offseason. I'm curious how much cap it saves them versus having signed him outright to that exact contract last year.

Also an important note

*Remaining $8.85M of 2026 salary fully guarantees the 3rd league day of 2026

I don't think it's a coincidence Howie did this on the 2nd league day of 2026. So he might have given up that guarantee

Or Sweat

He'll retire if he gets injured all year again

I may be exaggerating on the time by a few months. I just know he's out of here and a declining asset as we move forward and he approaches 30. I'll be surprised if he's on 2026 roster. Patriots always made sense with Vroeble there. And he bows down to Brady and their organization. The guy wants a new extension, which he knows he s not getting here. Hard to keep this guy happy.

Looking at the contract I think howie would rework it because it’s not how he does contracts there is 3 years left with 1 void year.. howie likes his max void years.

He'll be traded eventually, when it is financially feasible for the Eagles and for the right compensation. They are in no rush, but the media wants to make it a rush so they can seem like they were right. The joke is, people have talked about it for two seasons now and it hasn't happened.

Yup

Easton Butler is less reliable than RickeyScoops. More fake news.

Beyond it's $18M a year but Eagles can just cut him and walk away free.

Your last statement is kind of a convoluted answer. He was $16M in dead cap last year so if they signed him that would get pushed into future years. At minimum we would have saved cap space last year by extending him but kicking the can down the road. If they were to trade for him this year, they would restructure it so it's a low cap number for 2026 but kick the rest to future years. So strictly looking at 2026, his cap number would be lower by trading for him then just paying him.

I'm not really excited about Greenard. If you were to compare edge rushers to starting pitchers, the explosive edges are the pitchers that throw 100 and need to refine their location and secondary pitches but have huge break, spin rate, etc.

Greenard isn't very explosive, but he's got moves on top of moves. He's like a junkballer that peaks at 88 but throws 6 pitches for strikes. Sort of a non-personal foul magnet rich man's version of Derick Barnett. We just haven't had good experiences with those types of edges in Philly so I am hesitant.

What do you think is the right compensation if post June 1st trade? I don't think he's worth a 1st rounder at this point based on his last year especially. Guy has clearly lost a step from his first 2 years here and was dogging it last year.

@eagle45 laughing at my post. What is your argument for trading for Greenard instead and then having to pay him a new deal that is more than what Sweat is making? Not a fan of Josh Sweat's 12 sacks last year? More impressed by Greenard's 3 sacks last year?

can't speak for them, but I laughed because Josh left to chase money, now he wants to be traded. He just signed a 4 year deal and is like "get me outta here" lol

So essentially it's a pay cut and makes him a free agent a year sooner, which helps the team's cap situation? Is Landon getting something out of it, like some converted to a bonus or something? Or is he just doing it as a solid since he's going to retire soon?

Yup. I said that yesterday, he left for more money to a crap team and got what he wanted. Granted, the HC was his former DC and once he got fired he now wants out, but still. You made that choice.

I'm curious the financials if they did bring him back.

Please please please just draft Gennings Dunker to work behind Landon and take over, maybe as soon as this season.

Methinks Dickerson retires within the next two seasons. Sadly looks like the writing is on the wall.
