Is it really hard to believe that a drug addict grifter would call his father merely to show he could get him to answer the phone, if it meant 100s of thousands of dollars? Hunter is a loser. But its clever. Just going with your narrative, though: what was the logic of Hunter putting Joe on these calls, if Joe had no idea what was going on and this was all Hunter's "illusion?" Would Joe just say hi and ask about the weather, and never wonder or ask Hunter why he was talking with all of these foreigners?

When I was in banking, we'd routinely ask the head of investment banking to stop in very quickly to say hello, make the client feel special. He'd have no idea what the hell we were talking about -- come in, say hello, shake hands and then leave. It's not some crazy concept.
