When I was in banking, we'd routinely ask the head of investment banking to stop in very quickly to say hello, make the client feel special. He'd have no idea what the hell we were talking about -- come in, say hello, shake hands and then leave. It's not some crazy concept.

When Republican leadership convinced Nixon to resign, a LOT of rank and file Republicans were pissed at Goldwater & co for what they perceived as a lack of loyalty to "their guy" Nixon. Republicans suffered more for this in a lot of ways than they did over the actual resignation of Nixon. But Goldwater/etc. were willing to take that heat, because they actually had a commitment to the nation that was stronger than their commitment to a political party. If we don't get back to some semblance of that, I do fear for what will happen.
