With our QB situation being a big question mark, and the way the league is changing each and every year, I don't see why you hire a defensive coach.

Eagles couldn't land CeeDee Lamb.  No big deal, take Justin Jefferson, Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk, Claypool.... all had bigger years (and likely will continue to) than Jalen Reagor.  Point is:  They didn't miss out and Lamb and therefore had to go with Reagor.   They just misjudged Jefferson (or, more exactly... Howie did) and Higgins, etc. and decided that Reagor was the guy.    But, no worries, Howie got calls from other teams around the league that said that was a good idea... just like when he drafted JJAW the year before.

 

But, they call him to laud him, so that he keeps doing the stupid stuff, leaving their WR on the board.   No doubt Minnesota called to tell him that he made the right choice.

The rest of his drafts the last five years were fine, I mean people whine about Hollins at #118, who is still in the league due to his ST skills? Barnett may not be all pro, but he's been a solid starter at DE. Dillard is just bad luck, Sanders is fine, and so on. Mailata has all pro talent.

The bigger problem was the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th given up to get Wentz, the 2018 3rd for Darby, 2019 3rd for Tate, 2020 3rd and 5th for Slay. That's a lot of draft capital.

No SB without Wentz and Darby, so who cares!  Slay was a mistake in retrospect, but if Dillard and Brooks are healthy and we make the playoffs, not so much.

Slay has trade value if we want to recoup those picks and totally write off the 2021 season.

Do not be surprised if it happens this time.  Lurie made references to it in his Zoom address, and we know he is reactionary as F.  He undoubtedly sees what Washington and NYG have done this past year and things (correctly IMO) that they made decent HC hires.  If rejected by all of the "innovative" "name" offensive coaches and hot college coaches, my read is they will fall back on one of these rah-rah defensive guys, rather than a second or third tier OC or QB coach type.

This will enable them to completely meddle in the offense.  You can keep the HC in place, and change our offensive coordinators and other coaches or demand the defensive HC have certain aspects or systems in place, have enough % of certain kinds of plays, etc.  This will enable them to move into the next level of meddling, you watch.  Eventually the innovative, forward thinking, cutting edge owner will design his own AI to coach the quarterback factory team.
