That is a fantastic article.

My favorite two snippets:

Quote

[on the freshman republicans in 2010] you could tell they weren’t paying attention because they were just thinking of how to fundraise off of outrage or how they could get on Hannity that night. Ronald Reagan used to say something to the effect that if I get 80 or 90 percent of what I want, that’s a win. These guys wanted 100 percent every time. In fact, I don’t think that would satisfy them, because they didn’t really want legislative victories. They wanted wedge issues and conspiracies and crusades.

Quote

Under the new rules of Crazytown, I may have been Speaker, but I didn’t hold all the power. By 2013 the chaos caucus in the House had built up their own power base thanks to fawning right-wing media and outrage-driven fundraising cash. And now they had a new head lunatic leading the way, who wasn’t even a House member. There is nothing more dangerous than a reckless a**hole who thinks he is smarter than everyone else. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Senator Ted Cruz. He enlisted the crazy caucus of the GOP in what was a truly dope idea. Not that anybody asked me.

Study in contrast: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/aoc-one-of-the-least-effective-members-of-congress-study-says/ar-BB1fheEZ?ocid=msedgntp

For all the talk of AOC, she was by far one of the least effective members of congress at advancing her agenda.

One might say that when the crazy extremists who are more preoccupied with twitter and getting picked up by Maddow and Jacobin try to wield political power within the democratic party, they do not advance solely on the basis of their ability to garner media attention.

Compare this to the ability of the crazies to dominate the Republican party as outlined by Boehner.

I think this speaks more to the base of each party than the party itself to be sure. Democrats are a more fractured party in general, with a more contentious and less politically homogeneous base. Getting on Maddow is not the coup for a young Democrat that getting picked up by Hannity, Rush, and Levin was in 2010 for young Republicans.

But the effect on the party is clear. One party has a crazy wing, the other party has an epidemic of crazy.

They do gather and wield their power in different ways.

Good lord this is pathetic. Trump's army of imbeciles have taken over the party completely.

So when do the more traditional old guard types up and leave? At some point you’d think they would abandon the madness.

lots of the old guard declined to seek re-election in 2018 and 2020.

if the republican party gets bloodied in 2022 (would be against historical trends, but we've also never had a party behaving in this way) then maybe they hit bottom and start recovering quickly enough for 2024.

if they manage to be "competitive" in 2022, they might keep limping along.

if they manage to overperform in 2022, I'm looking at moving abroad because the country is fucced.

Hard to understand how say a Romney or Collins can continue to put up with this sheet. They have zero chance of changing anything from within while Trump is around.

I think they're just hanging on until sanity returns. at least that's what I think their strategy is.

Playing the long game -- hoping to still be relevant when Trumpism collapses and they can become party leadership.

They are losing the game right now...

At some point it is better to distance and return when things improve. In this case that probably means a restart after everything is burned down.

I think Romney at least can claim to have distanced himself from Trump. To be fair, however, Trump is particularly weak in Utah - so he has a bit more political flexibility to oppose Trump than Senators in more Trumpy red states.

Others, like Toomey, chose simply to retire rather than continue enabling this nonsense.
